Shield Bash Rune

King Lego··8 votes·4,784 views

Seriously? We first go with "too much damage" issue, and while apparently riot acknowledges that issue and work on making defensive stats for season 9, they proceed to add a rune like Shield Bash?

This is why we need Morello. Or at least someone with the guts to say "no, that's dumb. Don't add that to the game." with no concern of hurting some rioter's snowflake feelings when coming up with an idea like Shield Bash.

That rune is going to be a toxic rune riot. Isn't the point of the Resolve Tree to be pure defensive? Even if it's still a concept, it looks like a toxic rune. [zombie-brand-facepalm]

Point of resolve is both to make you more durable (ie: Overgrowth), and also to make your durability effects empower you (Ie: Demolish gives pure damage, but scaling with your HP)

No tree is limited to "gives pure defensives", or we would remove those effects from the other trees (ie: Nullifying Orb, Overheal, Triumph, any of the 5 or so different healing runes, etc)

The issue is the resolve tree does far less of what it is meant to do than other trees.

If we compared it to other trees: Domination/sorcery offer burst and mobility: Domination has 2 defensive-esque runes that heal. Sorcery has the shield Precision offers the sweet DPS and 3 def runes: with a sustain rune, overheal and triumph. Would throw tenacity in there, but tenacity is a near useless stat nowadays due to abundance of displacements which can't be reduced.

But then we have resolve, the numbers will relate to the row, in descending order:

  1. 2 runes that offer additional damage
  2. Soon to be 2 runes that offer additional damage and a useless rune no one uses. So it's between damage and damage.
  3. 1 rune that offers additional damage
  4. no runes that offer additional damage.

5 runes. There are more runes that offer the opposite effect than any other tree in the game. None of those offensive stats help them jungle, and only add damage to the game. I would gladly trade all of it for more beef.

Now compare this to season 3 masteries please. An entire tree, dedicated to making me as beefy as possible. That is what I want, and I'd imagine like minded tank players also want it. It's also what we NEED! Enough with this silly tacking of damage onto everything

My only issue is that the damage is simply yet another "More damage on next basic attack" source of damage. Could we have something like a Karma-esque Shield Bomb effect, or simply gaining an adaptive stat bonus for being shielded, or anything other than more damage on next basic attack?

Heck, why does it even need to be damage? Make it a kind of "2% of shield remaining value is healed when shield ends, doubled if initial shield amount has fallen below half." or whatnot.

I think, sorry, but this is just asking for things like Predator Skarner to break everything, between, Predator, this rune, sheen procs and whatever the heck else they can stack on a single auto.

Honestly, this kind of effect is being so heavily overused i'm thinking it's a core part of the TTK and burst damage issues.

1- You need a Morello. 2- This rune will be a disaster. I hope I'm wrong but season 9 is supposed to be a....well I don't know...A SEASON WITH MUCH LESS ISSUES UNLIKE SEASON 8! 3- nul orb is like free item 3156 , overheal is like free item 3072 and triumph...well you need to kill something to make use of it no item has that and I wouldn't call it a pure defence anyway. 4- I still think it's a terrible idea, but you go with these things anyway probably never asking yourselves "should we add that? Maybe it's a bad idea..." so you better be careful. The last thing I need is the revival of tank meta. The memory of a full Tank Maokai penta killing my team SOLO despite having armor and magic pen, still haunts me. 5- Just fix the game and be careful with that rune. Season 8 already had enough problems. Turrets, solo carry, comebacks, lane phase, and the infamous too much damage.

Thanks for your reply though. I was expecting that you were replying to those who only agree with that rune and not those who don't. I'm impressed really.

IMO there should be at least one durability rune in each tier of the tree. What we're looking at if you replace Bone Plating is:

  • A rune that deals damage to turrets
  • A rune that heals allies (btw undertuned to the point of being useless)
  • A rune that deals damage to champions

That's really weird. Why shouldn't this tier of Resolve have a single rune for durability?

WindLord70702 votes

Why get rid of bone plating though? It was one of the runes that really helped non meta champs survive especially for top lane. Now some champions don't have a good rune in that row. Some don't have shields or CC and will be to weak to push into the enemy tower to even use demolish. You could have atleast gotten rid of font of life instead or changed it to be more usable. Or maybe make demolish also have some type of defensive thing when under your own tower.

idk but i would be fine with that..

especially triumph removal... plz for the love of god remove that., 10% hp is a hell of a lot more broken than 5% hp and 5% mana we had on season 4 runes.

a) why did you also nerf overgrowth?

b) why did you nerf flat health from runes? (down to 90 tops with forced ad or ap pick in the first of the new 3 slots)

c) why did you introduce a rune to resolve that is only even usable by a small minority of the champion roster with kit inbuilt shields, and clearly going to be overbearing on tanks like ornn, shen, and sion who already deal a lot of early game and % health damage?

these champions are going to hit like a truck with essentially a second grasp proc on the already existing grasp and % health damage on their abilities. (shens spirit blade passive, ornns brittle proc, sions w)

all those changes are honestly shit. i can go along with the new stat system, since 5 resistances early arent to be underestimated even when we lose a LOT of scaling health for it, but the new rune and the overgrowth nerf for literally anyone who buys health is complete trash.

get rid of this abomination before it hits live and stop turning tanks into juggernauts.

Automated Riven2 votes

Why can't tanks get empowered by being more tanky? Why can't they have more stoneplate type of runes. Tanks having so much damage is part of why there is too much damage in the game right now. They need to sacrifice that damage for durability.

Ahpe4 votes

Last time I checked Divination isn't real and you can't predict how a rune will turn out after a day of it being out on the PBE.

It's also better than everyone who goes into resolve taking Bone Plating because Demolish and FOL feel underwhelming.

Frosted Tips2 votes

FOL is actually bad statistically. I take on like Nautilus and Braum support and the healing is actually awful. Like taking Demolisher or Bone Plating is atleast twice as effective as FOL.

Ah...you just reminded to add something...

Anyhow, even a concept, it looks like a toxic rune. I've got a bad feeling about it. Resolve tree is supposed to be a pure defensive rune. I main Urgot for crying out loud. When i go item 3071 item 3083 item 3022 I'll be damaging turrets or enemies even at a greater pace when i use my W.

Urgot's broken anyway

If he's really broken then picking him should mean auto-win at this point. Don't take pro plays that seriously man. Let me explain: Urgot is not exactly a team fight type of champion. He's beefy but not a tank. He relies a lot on his team and has a tool that can turn the tide of a team fight greatly (his R) but needs his team's communication and coordination to make use of it. Communication and coordination are those what pro players have and we don't unless we go 5 pre on normals or flex. The pro players didn't prove Urgot to be broken. They just showed his full power that even I, an Urgot main can't reach due to lack of communication and coordination from team.

Take that from someone who understands Urgot and been playing him since the very beginning of his release.

Ahpe2 votes

Imma take your word on it since you an Urgot main.

I've been testing Shield Bash and I feel like it feels more effective if the shield is tied in with a singular auto attack. So far I've tried it with Camille where Shield Bash procs when you procs your passive with Q1 which is a nice small boost and it deals a huge chunk of damage on Ornn when you W a champion and then attack them while they're brittle. That's a Grasp proc, Shield Bash and Brittle AA all in one attack which will chunk them. I've also tried it with Poppy but Shield bash doesn't proc on your passive since you have to go and pick it up first.

On champions with a series of enhanced i.e. Urgot or Olaf_(I know he doesn't have a shield)_, taking Demolish would be a better choice as shield bash wouldn't really make that much of a difference. Shield Bash is kind of like sheen where it's really only good if you already have an empowered AA in your kit i.e. Cam Q, Vik Q, Zoe P, Ekko E.

I don't often take demolish on Urgot but there are occasions I do. However, shield bash can be used on Urgot when he uses his W but even though his W deals reduces the aa damage, it's at a fast pace which is fairly decent damage. Urgot doesn't have much aoe damage except his passive which is close ranged like a shotgun.

However, you can cast W on Urgot and recast W again, you won't be in that machine gun stance while in W but the shield remains for a few duration, and Urgot can use the shield bash aa proc, and add that with his shotgun it should hurt quite hard. I tried Trinity Force on Urgot. It's decent especially with his shotgun passive.

I'm still working on Trinity Force Urgot. But I'm not having time to even play due to lag and university.

I know how Urgot's kit works and both his passive and Q are AOE damage.

Sheen is only really good when enhances that ONE AA for a burst of damage, again I.E. Camille Q, Zoe Passive, Jax W. The reason why people don't build Sheen items on champs like Azir, Kled, Urgod is because with champions with empowered AA's they can get that burst of damage off and go on with the rest of their combo while like Urgot is gonna sit there and keep the sustained damage although that 1 sheen auto isn't making much of a difference.

Although if you're stacking HP on Urgot then maybe Shield Bash will make a difference.

Well, i'm still going with Black Cleaver anyway. And Urgot's main build are all HP because he's a ranged juggernaut and HP stacks with his W shield so HP items (with AD of course) are his recommended build path and pretty much essential. I often go with Youmuu's on Urgot. Its lethality is quite strong with his shotgun passive and its active is helpful too. But it all depends on the enemy comp really.

On PBE, Riven gets >4k damage in a game from this secondary Rune.

I agree with the OP - This rune doesn't feel like it belongs in Resolve at all. It will be the first rune in that tree that ONLY gives damage to champions (even though it procs off a shield). The theme of Resolve is durability - "Live Forever".

And especially, to remove Bone Plating, maybe the best rune in the tree, for this. Why would you remove Bone Plating?

Apparently Bone Plating is toxic. I don't know. I'm at the 50/50 of whether i'm going to quit the game season 9 or continue. It looks like every promising change that Riot added for seaosn 9, 2 dumb changes gets added.

Actually I don't see a point in "shield bash" to be "tooooo strong". Even on tank karma I deal in a 35 min game never more than 1200 damage total by this rune. And as you know tank karma has nearly as much shield duration as coodown and no mana problems at all once rod of ages. Also its not the smallest shield existing

Besides that only riven or adcs with Janna could really effectively use it
