Malz is easy? Why do I struggle with him?
People saying malz is really strong and easy to play. Why then do I struggle with him. I find him exceedingly and incredibly difficult to play for his very low mobility and hard to land q.
What am I missing?

Because he isn't a carry. He's basically a secondary support at this point because all of his power is in his lane pushing and his ultimate's CC not his damage.
He can gain lane priority for free and guarantee a gank becomes a kill with his ult. You just play safe until your jungler comes, then shove them under tower until your ult comes back.
People forget that when a close-range champion doesn't have mobility or self-peel, their skill floor goes up, not down. Dashes and skillshots aren't everything.
because "mechanics" just cause it looks easy doesn't mean it is easy.
Well he is truly simple in execution, issue is just that due to his rework causing him to be so strong he got into proplay despite being simple he got hit with the nerf slegehammer.
As a result his W is good for nothing except pushing when there is no enemy champion nearby, his base damages are shit and his stats are low if i recall right while his mana costs are high and his passive....well it´s a spellshield.
He still has decent scaling and great synergy with liandries torment but he is not particularly "good".
So all you do on him is pick teleport+flash, farm the entirety of laning phase, sometimes help your jungler with your ult if that looks good then go to teamfight by throwing E´s and Q´s around while locking down whichever target is the most annoying and does not have cleanse and is in reach.
How you farm out laning phase? As safely as possible even if it means missing CS.
He used to be the "approach me and die" type of champion
And now he is a spammer with less movement speed.
As far as Q goes, its a delayed aoe and Malzahar is a prophet. Pretty self explanatory.
The biggest conundrum is that due to the nature of his kit, his "range" is technically longer when enemies approach you and consequently shorter as they move away from you. So because your burst is lower than the pre-rework iteration, your window of usefulness is decreased even further as their window for escaping or killing you has increased.
All I can say is good luck with learning how to pick fights that will actually amount to anything.
