What ever happened to that Role exempt queue type (and other questions)

When Solo Q was announced to be making a return, I could've sworn they were going to introduce the ability to select a role you'd be guaranteed not to get. So people could do like Fill, but never ADC, or something like that. Was this idea scrapped in favor auto-fill?

And about Auto-Fill... seriously what is the true purpose behind this? If it really only means to reduce queue times then it is definitely going way too far. I've had like 30 sec queue times and been placed a different role... I've also been placed just fine, someone dodged, THEN I got an off role. Why should dodges count toward queue times? Even factoring in the whole thing it was still less than 3 minutes.

I honestly feel like the auto fill feature is doing more harm than good when it's displacing people for seemingly no reason. I'd vote to not have be implemented until at LEAST the 3 min mark. We got used to 15 min queue times last season, and while that's obviously not ideal it really makes the auto fill seem like a purely negative feature.

Also, I know parties of 4 are disabled in Flex since they feared not enough Solo players, but I'm confused as to why it launched that way. Was it just better to assume there wouldn't be enough solo participation rather than run the risk of complaints for queue times? Seems odd to me to run the solution before you even know the problem exists.

Finally, I was wondering if anyone could share their thoughts about being able to give someone skin shards in hextech crafting. I think I've seen others say it could be abused. Does anyone know how? I got a Soulstealer Vayne shard and although that's pretty epic, my friend would appreciate it even more. It's a shame I can't give it to him.

Thanks for your time!

apparently role exemption increased Q times by far too much. (Everyone probably said they wanted to exempt support)

The thing with Auto fill is, you really need to understand the Bottle necking principal that it's trying to prevent.

If say one support Q'ed up every minute, compared to say 5 top laners. It means that your serving one match every minute. But the line for top lane is going to continue to get longer. And the longer the line gets the longer the average wait time increases.

In one minute, you would have 1 top laners served right away, while the remaining 4 will be waiting 1, 2, 3, and 4 minutes to get served, resulting in an average wait time of 2 minutes.

Now lets say in those 4 minutes for those clients to get served, the line increased at the same rate. You would end up with 20 people still waiting, you would end up with an average wait time of 10.5 minutes. (Notice that it doesn't take long for that average wait time to build up)

Basically, anyone who claims that "NO I'd rather wait the 2 extra minutes to get the role I want" has no idea how problematic bottle necking actually is, and doesn't realize how it affects wait time.

Thanks for the reply!

I appreciate that explanation. The auto fill does make more sense in that new light, but I still feel a better solution should be possible considering the effect this feature is bringing. If large numbers of people can complain about the side effects of this solution, then it's clearly not perfect. Maybe there is no perfect answer and this is the ideal. Either way, I'd be satisfied to know that they're at least considering alternatives or they're happy with the results this is bringing.

In your opinion, was this post too much? Should I make a separate one for my Crafting question?

but it's also worth noting that queue times weren't an issue outside of high ELO, and were also a non-issue in normals. Yet Riot enabled autofill for both of those as well.

Not to mention that the shitty autofill protection system counts a lobby where someone dodged as a game, so if someone dodges several games in a row you can blow through all your autofill protection.

It's possible that it became necessary, as they divided the player base because the separated Flex Q from Solo/Duo.

In the past, Auto fill was enabled when expected Q times reached a certain threshold. And while that was mostly a Higher Elo thing, lower Elo players did occasionally got filled during certain times. (Off peek hours)

As for Auto fill protection, That is something that can actually work, if it actually works in a fair and consistent manor. Cause A) it would significantly improve the player experience if they could guaranty their roles at least some of the time. And B) you may actually encouraged people to fill/support to earn the protection.

The purpose behind autofill is that Riot's too lazy to make Support feel good to play, so they band-aid fixed queue times by forcing players to be supports.

That may have some truth, but I don't really feel like the support role is that far away from being ideal. Most of the champs I enjoy playing do happen to be in the mid lane, but there are champs I enjoy in every role. Even for support I think Thresh is just a great experience. The role is expanding a bit with mages, too. Brand is another one of my favorites for the role.

Support items are generally cheap and there are great ways to get gold, but I think the fact that the gold income is obtained so indirectly is what's truly killing the role's potential. It doesn't feel like you'll get the chance to have as much of an impact on your victory, even if that's not always the case. Being able to CS and test your skills in solo lanes are much more active experiences.

That and there are no support assassins, so if you're an assassin main and get autofilled to support you're SoL.

I jsut try to play the biggest assassin cock blocks when I am support.

I agree with this am sure they said they was going to be making support more fun to play (camt remember the exact words)

What about yomuu's blocking an AA or spell?

Remember that?

I amember!

I do! I was actually going to question that a couple weeks ago and forgot about it lol. I think ghostblade really does feel a bit underwhelming with only having the movespeed for the active. Perhaps blocking something isn't really a good fit for the item's identity, but I think something should be added.

I want the exempt role thing. Thankfully the one role I don't want seems to be one of the most requested (mid). As a supp main, it's easy to get the role I want, nearly every other game I can choose whichever lane I want. And when I get auto filled it's always a nice surprise.

Someone may have said that sounded like a good idea, in no way does that mean it actually was going to happen.

They tested it on another server.

Surprise, surprise, most people probably exempted support which would basically defeat the purpose of enabling autofill.

Honestly, I'd be happy if they let you exempt any role which isn't support; I just want to stop being filled into ADC.

Same story here

I actually am glad to say that I can put support ans my secondary again and not get support every single game though. So far doing this has kept me away from ADC.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Never really taken support as my secondary, but I don't mind playing it on occasion.

However, I have been avoiding it due to the frequency of autofilled ADCs and how frequently bottom lane tends to be camped.
