Sion

Just had a match as Sion versus a Nasus. while my farming in lane was pretty good, i could not CC the nasus enough to not die two times in lane to him. They also had an udyr jungle who did quite a large amount of damage to me.

I dont play sion very often, but im not bad at him in a teamfight and or farming. but was wondering if any sion players out there had any info to give.

Check out this channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXJQ4pW15tOaYY0oVMPpNvw. The guy is a Sion only main that is at least diamond. I think he's gotten to masters and maybe challenger at one point.

Cool. i'll check it out. I've always enjoyed sion, but i was focused on practicing my main for a few months. time to start playing other champs now.

Exactly how long is "always"?

i've owned him for over a year or so but i rarely actually played him. however, his playstyle is what i loved. played him in URF and One for All and its quite fun too.

Like Nautilus is one of the first 3 champs i ever got (Elise and Twisted fate are the other two), however, i used to support him and jungle. but i cant seem to get him to work in top lane, so i avoid picking him often

you beat Nasus early as Sion period. However actually killing him is hard you need jungler for that and even then if you do get ahead you will still have troubles killing him later anyway

So as Sion its probably best to help your allies by ganking with your ult after pushing your lane

A few tips from me are

if you cannot outscale outpush and roam, your ult is amazing for ganks i often sneak through the jungle and gank enemies from their own lane, this works best wen ganking bot or top but can also be done mid Time your entrance into lane so there arent any minions around just look at your own wave to determine where theirs are Then ult in from behind your opponents people tend to fall back a little towards their turret in case your coming to them but by doing so they group up perfectly.

I often caught people by surprise this way

If you fall behind grab warmogs and hug tower now you can't be bullied out of lane by trades and poke nor be killed by burst simply sit there last hit freeze if you must and push like a mofo when your opponent leaves lane to pressure their turrets, and remember you can always follow them after pushing with your ult and still arrive first.

Oh yea. i was definitely punishing him pre-6, couldnt kill him though. however, even when i was attempting to freeze lane or let him push (just focusing on last hitting to not lose CS, while he was actively hitting them for Q farming), i still ended up under his turret where he could safely Q farm even better.

If i plan on getting to gold, i need to work on how to control the minion waves more while working on some more champs.

well at least know Sion can be a beast in teamfights however this is also a bit team reliant but your zoning and peeling is good as Sion

Vs a champion like nasus who wants to sit there and farm its often best to bully him pre 6 hard enough to delay him decently

and after that just push the wave in and go help your team get a lead as nasus stays top to farm you can help your team take objectives or kills

The thing is even if nasus gets 10000 stacks he still needs to reach your carries and Sion is perfectly capable to prevent him from reaching your carries teamfights.

You see you counter him in teamfights as well as him not being able to kill you either in lane so hes not a problem

Minion wave controll is indeed important

Heres another general tip for trading with Sion but works with every other champion aswell

when a minion gets low walk up to it and attack it, but before you hit the minion cancel the animation and sidestep People will often try to hit you with a spell but since you just dodged it they wasted mana and pushed the wave towards you allowing you to trade back with your aoe spells wihtout pushing the wave to them

Its also an easy way to make a wave push towards you, depending on wheter you want a gank or not you have to make sure it doesn't push too hard because minions in numbers will wreck you.

Well, what i was confused about is while i was only last hitting the minions, the Nasus who was actively autoattacking to Q farm still manage to get under his turret.

Would of thought that he would push me into turret or it would freeze halfway as i wanted.

Spoofghoul1 votes

This can have a number of reasons

  1. You traded with spells and applied damage to his minions too, thus making his minions die fsater and pushing the wave towards him.

  2. You attacked Nasus with a basic attack so his minions started attacking you rather then your minions thus his minions took damage whilst yours didn't and therefore they die quicker and the wave pushes towards him.

  3. He walked in front of his minion wave to hurdle up your minions, aka freezing, your hurdled up minions will now all start attacking the first minion in range and switch over to the next one applying focused fire rather then spread out attacks this causes his minions to die quicker so the wave pushes towards him.

At least thats some reasons which come to mind

a combination of #3 and #2 seem likely. I avoided using Q or E on the minions as my goal was to freeze lane.

Thx buddy. I'll bug again if i got any more Qs (got to wait on CD)

Don't play him that often since I don't play top often. (But he is my goto top laner)

It may have been after the laning phase, but if you don't want to auto push by default, don't build Tiamat. Personally, I wouldn't even buy an offensive item.

Though Usually I end up pushing anyways when I play him. Cause I tend to line up his abilities for both Harass, and wave clear. And you might want to push a Nasus into the tower anyways, to try and deny him minions. Even if he was good at last hitting, he won't be able to siphon strike them all.

And then lastly, Be the teams tank, and initiate the team fights. Cause if your opponent is Nasus, you need to pick decisive fights, and not just push lanes while he farms.

I will be honest, I never thought Sion was a fun champ untill I got Mecha Zero Sion from a free box and started playing him. Now I love the champ. He seems perfectly balanced and fair to play against, but isnt weak at all :D

I am in no way an expert, but I will try to share my experience with playins Sion:

  • after playing for a while and changing the starting items, I found out that item 3068 is by far the best starting item, even for some ap matchups, always rush sunfire

  • for boots I always go item 3111 unless they have literally 0 stuns, but then again its up to you and what you prefer

  • item 3025 is much stronger than item 3110 , except if you are vs really full attack speed team, it gives same CDR, also a lot of mana, but gives a great slow to get even more CC and some burst from sheen, rush iceborn second item if you are fed or at least get the sheen

  • always start item 2033 , in almost all matchups try to fight lvl 1, 2 or 3 , I mostly start E-W-Q, unless I can really dominate the lane in which case I go E-Q all in lvl 2, then W at lvl 3. Abuse the coruption potion early game when its op, spam the minions with E and get some harass down. Also I prefer playing with summoner 14 rather than summoner 12 , since your early game is really strong and you can get some kills down, also you can get to lane with ulti later so I dont like taking tp all that much (except when you know lane is impossible to kill, like vs Yasuo, Garen or Darius)

  • for offencive item my first choice is always item 3748 , maybe try some item 3142 and item 3156 if your team is really dominating

  • in teamfights dont be afraid to ulti at melee range, its just a free AOE knockup. Also dont be afraid to use zoning ulti to push them where you want, or even just to waste flashes, it has really low cooldown after item 3025 and item 3065, also never ulti at mid range its the worst for hitting someone. If you are going to die, try to die near low hp or immobile enemy carry so that you can finish them of with passive, in teamfights nobody pays much attention to your corpse doing double dmg with autos (also procs iceborn and can activate randuins so that they cant run very far)

  • dont forget to bm by spaming ctrl+3 very fast, I baited so many guys into bad fights because its so annoying to listen to :D

GL and HF, I hope I helped a bit :)

I used to main Sion before finding Kled, I used to follow https://www.youtube.com/user/soultranLOL (Soultran) because he plays Sion in every single position, is really nice, and uploads every day.

That old champion portrait of Sion makes me want to cry. I still miss him, and there's no one else who plays like he used to : ( R.I.P.

Not a big Sion player but I played him ALOT on rework release.

I like to go item 3077 into item 3512.

Once the portal is down, just shove the enemy into his tower non-stop, then roam for an ulti gank, base to buy stuff, and tp back to lane.

Its pretty fun to do.

: ( Everyone hates Old Sion.

I guess that's why they removed him from the game.

meh, Sion was one of the first champs I ever bought back in season 3. To be honest, I really hated to champ's visuals. I just wanted to build that full AD life steal build because of his old ulti's interaction.

But the rework... oh man. I always had a thing for bad guys. In any game I play I ALWAYS go for the bad guys for some reason. And Sion (reworked) was the absolute villain in my eyes. A big, mindless brute bent on killing and destroying. Everything about him made me shiver. His VO, his visuals. I just fell in love and spammed him alot.

To give you an idea on how much I love villains, back when I started playing, my first champs were Mordekaiser Zed and Thresh.

Its just a natural attraction for me lol Syndra was a close one too just for the VO

Wind Whistler1 votes

Yeah, he needed a Visual Update, and although his voice was great, it just wasn't right, sadly. It was sad to see it go, but it was kind of necessary.

What WASN'T necessary, was the removal of everything that made him Sion. Especially his ult.

I don't mind the Q going. It was a dated ability, anyway, and point and click abilities that are that strong (when built AP, at least) are generally frowned upon by Riot. That's why they changed Zilean's Q.

The changes they made to his W weren't too bad, but removing the AP Ratio for the shield and heavily nerfing the AP Ratio for the damage was pointless. It was basically them saying "We don't want you to play this way", which is a thing that Riot has said they DON'T want to do to champions.

The total removal of his E was stupid. They really should have incorporated it into his new E, or passive, or ult, or ANYTHING. The fact that his new E scales poorly with AP only enforces the idea that Riot didn't want people playing AP Sion anymore.

The total removal of his ultimate is what absolutely destroys me. There will never be an ability that I miss more than Old Sion's ultimate. When you think about it, it actually went with his thematic, too. He was a crazy warrior who charged in recklessly, and that's pretty much what it was. You ulted, you went in, and you started auto attacking shit and being really hard to kill. It could have been changed, and changed a lot, and I'd be okay with it, but instead they just removed it, like almost everything else in his kit. That's why whenever I see a thread about Sion or something, I always throw a little hissy fit. I'll never stop being upset about the rework, and I think a lot of the people who played Old Sion (although there were few) feel the same as I do about him.

Sion needed to change. Not be removed from the game.

Also, I tend to learn towards the bad guys in stuff, too. My four favorite characters of all time are major villains. Cho'Gath, Destroyah (From Godzilla Vs. Destroyah), Sharptooth (From the first Land Before Time movie), and Giga Bowser (From Super Smash Brothers Melee).

Oh yeah. One more thing. I personally find the current Sion's voiceover to be a bit... over the top. "I'LL DROWN YOU IN YOUR OWN BLOOD!", "I... WILL BREAK YOU!", and then there's the choking he does after he dies. It's a little bit overdone, but that's just me.

I wouldn't recommend item 3512 against Nasus . He'll love farming the free stacks off it.

DREADN0UGHT1 votes

Sure he could get 1 or 2 stacks out of it, but once he is shoved under tower he has to be on ball to get all these last hits, so his attention won't be spent on last hitting the voidlings trust me.
