Is ARAM Matchmaking Stacked?
I'm a big fan of the recent ARAM changes, particularly the bench system. It makes it far easier to fill in gaps in team composition and grab champions that are too strong to pass up.
But even with the improvements in ARAM, winning or losing can still be rather gimmicky. If your team ends up with or picks into a composition that the other team hard counters, there's not much you can do. Similarly, if your teammates end up with or choose champions they're not familiar with, it's pretty hard to win, especially if your opponents understand or main theirs.
Despite its win/loss subjectivity, I play a lot of ARAM. I'm a relative newbie who finds it useful for learning champion matchups and navigating team fights. It's a good place to do those things without the extra wrinkles of SR.
That said, I've had some recent games in ARAM that make me think something's a bit off with matchmaking. Take for instance a recent match I played. My team lucks into a strong composition with high damage, range, cc, and a strong tank. The other team has a decent comp, but one that should struggle against what we have. Unfortunately, the game went quite poorly for our team. One of our squishier mages would not stop running at the enemy team to 1 v. 5 them. He ended up with a handful of kills and +20 deaths. Our tank had similar issues with decisionmaking and landing basic combos. He did a bit better than the mage, but ended up with deaths in the teens.
I was curious as to what happened, so I looked up the match. What I found explained everything. The two teammates who were struggling were both Bronze V. Four of our opponents were high to low Silver. So the match consisted of four Silver and an unranked against one Silver (myself), two Bronze V, and two unranked.
I get that MMR for solo q and ARAM aren't the same thing. But for the love of god, I can't figure out why we got a match that was so stacked. I don't think the Bronze V players qued up together, so it would make the most sense from a balance perspective to split them between the two teams. It would also make a tremendous amount of sense to bring one or two of the Silvers to our side.
Has anyone else had similar experiences in ARAM?
