Any Tips or Tricks for Improving Marksman Mechanics?

I’ve been working on my mechanics so I can farm, kite, and trade better. So far, I’ve found three things to be helpful:

Player Attack Move Click. I bound the command to my R key and started using it whenever I want to do a basic attack (there’s a setting where you hit the command and your champ will attack whatever is closest to your cursor at the time you issue the command—no need to click). I found it to be a little cumbersome at first, but once I got used to it, I didn’t want to go back. Shifting basic attacks to my keyboard hand allowed my mouse hand to do a much better job with moving and positioning. It also makes kiting feel very natural since I’m essentially doing the commands for it the entire game.

Checking AA range. I bound the Player Attack Move command to a side button on my mouse and started toggling it every couple seconds so I can check my AA range. If anyone happens to be in range, I give them a little love tap. I noticed that constantly checking my AA range helped me get better with trading and much better with some of the marksmen like Cait, Varus, and Ashe who have range advantages.

DPI. A couple months ago, I wasn’t comfortable playing with anything above 900 DPI. But then I started gradually bumping up my mouse sensitivity in 100 DPI increments. I’d play for about a week and then kick it up another notch. Right now, I’m at 1800 DPI. I feel like giving movement commands is easier and playing with an unlocked camera takes less effort. You definitely trade off some precision with more DPI, but I think I can go a bit higher before precision and control become an issue for me.

Are there any other tips or tricks that are particularly helpful for improving marksman mechanics?

On the DPI part, I think you want a fairly low one or “average” one. If I remember correctly pro’s and high elo players click very close to their champ so they can dodge skill shots easier and can turn around easier to. If you click far away from yourself, you champ has to turn all the way around then start moving. but if you click right next to you, your champ turns around immediately so you can auto attack, cast spell, move, etc.

You also should work on kiting a lot, walking back a step then auto attacking. I think Ashe is very helpful with this because she has her passive slow to slow down the target and allow her to move more before auto attacking again.

Here is one good trick to learn. LEARN YOUR OPPONENT’S RANGES. Knowing how far their auto attack ranges and ability ranges are will help you massively when trading, kiting and chasing/running.

And this is probably one of the most important things, time the enemy summoner spells. The top two you should watch and time is Flash and TP (tp isn’t usually taken in the bot lane rn but it’s still an important summ to time no matter what lane you are in). Flash is a super important summ for both the user and the enemy, it helps immobile champs get away from a fight, so letting your jungler and knowing when it is on CD will help your team a lot in ganking and trading.
