Riot there is no need to Remove Rune Combiner or create something better instead

I don't have any T1 or T2 runes so this doesn't effect me but let me explain why it doesn't need to be removed and if it does it should be replaced by something better.

The main reason why it doesn't need to be removed has to do with new players. While it may be a trap for new players the fact is that once they hit level 30 then they will be locked into lower tier runes forever because the Rune Combiner would be removed. No player that just hit level 30 wants to have a collection of obsolete runes that they can't get rid of.

The solution is very simple:

  1. disable the rune combiner for every account until they hit level 30 or they have acess to it at level 20 to allow the player to get rid of his tier 1 runes. Then when they hit level 30 they get the rune combiner so they can eliminate all their obsolete runes for tier 3 runes instead.

  2. add a trade in option. what this means is say for instance is allow the player to trade in or refund his obsolete runes. Either refund him something like 25%-50% of the regular price of the rune once he hits the next tier threshold. So at levels 20 and 30 he would begin to have access to the trade in options so he can trade in his lower tier runes for tier 2 and tier 3 runes. so for instance a tier 1 rune which cost 5 IP can be traded into the store for say 1 IP while a tier 2 rune may be traded in for say 9 IP. Tier 3 may or may not be added to the trade in option though i think it's good to have as level 30 players may want to get rid of things like flat armor seals as they feel scaling armor seals are better so they can at least use the trade in option for tier 3 runes aswell. that's just a suggestion though

  3. add an upgrade option. this is the same as the trade in option but it just upgrades the current rune for the same rune of higher tier. so for example a tier 1 AP glyph can be upgraded to tier 2 then finally tier 3. the store would automatically just bump up his rune and charge an upgrade fee depending on the cost of the current rune and the cost of the higher tier rune.

personally i think the trade in or upgrade options would be the better solutions because the rune combiner is basically "get rid of a good lower tier rune and end up with an unwanted higher tier rune" or luck of the draw type of thing. whereas the trade in or upgrade option allows the new player to remove his obsolete runes and he gets to pick what higher tier rune he wants in exchange. in other words one solution still has luck of the draw while the other two options are his decisions instead.

But if your going to remove the rune combiner for a better solution then you should remove it once the new solution is also ready to roll out. This way low level players can still use it if they like until the new solution comes out instead of "well now i have no way to get rid of all my tier 1 runes even though i am a level 21 player who has begun to use tier 2 runes". I'm sure that player would not be happy that he is stuck with tier 1 runes which he don't need anymore.

This is just my two cents on this subject.

Tier 1 and 2 runes will be so cheap it won't matter. They're there for experimentation so you don't buy junk runes once you hit 20. Now players can buy runes before 20 without losing all of their ip, and get a feel for what they like.

If they really have a problem with having t1 and t2 runes once they have bought t3 runes, they can contact player support to have them removed from the account. After the up to 90% cost reduction the runes are worth their stat bonuses for the few levels you use them for - so there's no reason to do even partial refunds on them.

I was under the impression that they're just getting rid of Tier 1 & 2 runes, is that not what's going on? Sometimes I don't read things.. LeeSin

they are removing some tier 1 and tier 2 runes but they are also removing the rune combiner. The rune combiner has it's pros and cons. that's why it shouldn't be removed unless a better solution is made to take it's place.

How about:

-Make all Summoners available at lvl 10 -Remove Tier 1 and 2 Runes, make all Runes their Tier 3 values and available at lvl 20 -Remove the Rune Combiner and make a simple refunding system instead -Make Masteries unavailable until lvl 30 (for the sake of my OCD)

That'd be my dream for new account leveling, it's currently pretty unbalanced when you're not level 30. Everyone should be on the same playing field at all times. And Tier 1 & 2 runes were a stupid idea from the beginning. Riot pls.

yeah thats the problem that no matter what they do, players on smurf accounts will still not buy tier 1 and tier 2 runes unless they get a full refund because they are wasting precious IP. whereas the new player will end up buying tier 1 and tier 2 runes because they don't know any better as they need those lower tier runes to "be able to play at an equal and fair level in the laning phase".

They really just need to get rid of tier 1 and 2 altogether, t3 runes are enough of an ip sink and with leveling required to unlock rune slots it's not like a level 1 is going to perform on par versus a 30.

The rune combiner seems like it was an after thought and tends to just create miscellaneous runes - I still have runes I'll never used that were created from the rune combiner in an attempt to salvage some runes I purchased when I was still new to the LoL experience.

I'd rather it not exist at all either way though.

They really should just make Tier 3 runes the only ones you can buy, go ahead slightly cut the costs on them and then choose which runes are available to you at which levels or how many Runes you may buy at each level. I mean they similarly do this with Masteries. I only get one point for my Mastery page so I put it in one slot.

Same could be done with Runes, I unlocked one rune slot, now I can buy one Tier 3 Rune. No matter what you will still have experimenting going on and smurfs wrecking new players or even new player who get the game just wrecking people. Tier 1 & 2 Runes are a waste of time and IP.

If everyone has the same chance to buy Runes and level up, I hardly understand how the playing field is unfair? Tier 3 Runes should be buyable starting level 1. You still have to grind IP for Runes and achieve levels for slots so why waste time and IP with Tier 1 & 2 Runes?
