The tutorial is really really awful

Like, it teaches the very very basic things of the game, like moving and such, but literally zero about game knowledge etc. (#TankAsheOP) I think it would be better for this game to have an actual introduction than 120+ champs of which 20 are played.

The point of the tutorial is not to give people in-depth knowledge of a fantastically complex game. It's to teach them how to use the interface and what all the different parts of the map are.

Reingel298 votes

True, but I think there should also be basic tutorial to the basic champion classes (fighter, tank, marksmen, mage) So new people would know a bit of what those tags mean.

Borbland5 votes

Yeah, dota 2 for example has a fairly good tutorial, with a last-hit tutorial where you can practice your last-hitting (and denying). It's alot longuer, but hey, it's a MOBA, you don't learn anything in seconds.

Jari14 votes

We aren't demanding that it teaches them complex parts of the game. We want the tutorial to teach something useful along with the interface. You know, like not buying Thornmail on Ashe.

MisterHealYoGirl2 votes

That's what the recommended items are for.

not a starburst15 votes

Right, but why not use the recommended items in the tutorial? That's the perfect time to introduce them.

MisterHealYoGirl3 votes

In the advanced tutorial, you DO. You're talking the one on the Howling Abyss, right? There's another one, on Summoner's Rift, that walks you through a whole game, items and all.

not a starburst9 votes

Fair enough, but if you're going to bother with items, why not teach people how to properly itemize right then? It's not that hard. People should be able to walk into the next game with some idea how items work. Do they need to know counter-itemizing, build paths, and the like? Not yet, of course. But they should have a general idea of what kind of items to get on what champions.

"This is [Sion]. [Sion] is a [tank]. As a [tank], you do [tanky things and take lots damage], so it's a good idea to build [insert health items here]." "This is [Sivir]. [Sivir] is a [marksman]. As a [marksman], you do [lots of damage to enemies with your autoattacks], so it's a good idea to build [insert AD items here]." "This is [Syndra], [Syndra] is a ..."

Like, you can just briefly explain how items work with champions and champion roles. Of course, some or most of it will go clean over a newbie's head. But a good bit of it will stick, and when they go on to the next tutorial, they'll have a working concept of how items work instead of just blindly clicking the recommended items.

This way, new players get why they're getting items, even if only dimly.

MisterHealYoGirl1 votes

I definitely see where you're coming from, but I think that itemization is a little bit complicated for someone who just learned what a tower is. The point of the tutorial is to teach someone with no experience at all an incredibly complicated game. With that in mind, I think that just a generalized list of what items your champion likes is good enough; it gives you offensive, defensive, and all-purpose items. As someone who was a newbie not so long ago, I definitely didn't want or need the complexity immediately. But this is just my opinion. I don't make tutorials. xD

for me thats one of the most fun parts of league is finding what to build, whether that be a non meta build or jsut an item people dont think of. if when people start the game they get this is what you buy for each class then you have the same boring builds every game, and you cant really teach them how to build vs every match up, that is for them to learn.

mikemcparty1 votes

I agree... Except, the first time you try to build "off-meta" items, you get flamed and destroyed by other people on your team.

shadowhunter44441 votes

Not at low summoner levels. There, anything goes. I won a 1v1 on howling abbys while I was like summoner level 3 by building nothing but rejuvenation beads on Renekton. Later I realized that kindlegem would be good with CDR. Eventually, I switched from spirit of the ancient golem to spirit visage.

Eventually people will flame, but by that point you have enough of an idea what you're doing to possibly make it work.

mikemcparty2 votes

Anything goes. Unless you are trying to learn the game and are matched up with smurfs along the way

Fixed that for you

The fun part is that Sion is a fighter :)

Final Boss Naut1 votes

at that point why doesnt riot just make a new "Tutorial Mode" where you have a ladder of 1V1 fights that you can work through explaining the champion you're on in a newb-freindly way. while letting people Experience different mechanics in every fight.

IE asheVashe also introduces bot lane warding or garenvgaren introducing gnar and top lane warding or annieVannie introducing mid lane warding

and there IS an accepted Lane Warding Setup for base players "IE tri bush bot"

in all honestly there does need to be less of a disconnect of information for new players.

Jari3 votes

But if a player isn't introduced to that correctly, it messes up again. I made a little account so I could help my friends get into the game, and I decided I wanted to see how that tutorial was. I didn't even know about that second part until I looked under tutorial. Not to mention, even here at level 30, I still see some dumb builds (aka that Thornmail ashe.) Not only that, I see people stacking unique passives, not even knowing it. The tutorial doesn't go over that either.

As much as I hate to put it like this, Riot needs to assume that people coming in are braindead. I'd rather a tutorial that goes over more than it needs to than one that doesn't do anything.

shadowhunter44441 votes

They just need to add a third level of tutorial, teaching stuff like what items work on who and how unique passives work and whatnot. Add, not change.

Jari1 votes

The problem is the first tutorial already doesn't do much. If I recall correctly, it teaches you how to use an ability (Here it's going fine,) how to use the interface (shop mostly, alright but doesn't help with other spots,) and how to build Thornmail on Ashe (this is where my problem is.)

You can change it to have her build an AD item instead of the thornmail. And the, "Oh they have you do that so you don't die" excuse doesn't work here, because you can't die in tutorial. I tried to die and could not drop below 1.

shadowhunter44441 votes

Maybe they should just not use Ashe. Use a fighter, so a mix of damage and tankiness makes sense. Maybe the ones that use mana are a little too complex for a tutorial. Idk. Just a thought.

shadowhunter44441 votes

I remember when I first started, I 1v1'd playing 6 warmog annie. My thougth process: "If I'm harder to kill, I have time to cast more spells and win the fight. As my buddy was pretty nuby too, it worked fairly well.

There is a learning curve to this game. Around summoner level 3 - 5 you realize what makes sense on what champions. By the time you hit 10 you know how to actually play a champ. By 20 you figure out how roles work (except for jungle, took me a while to understand that lol). By level 30 you have a more or less complete understanding of the game and are ready to explore deep tactics on your own.

Basically, let new players fail forward. They learn and grow, no need to shove it all on them at once.

Jari1 votes

But here's the problem. People don't learn like that sometimes. Like I said on another post here, I have seen Thornmail Ashe's at level 30. The problem isn't that it isn't teaching everything. Nobody wants to have too much shoved in. There is very little though that the tutorial teaches. The only thing it teaches is the interface, which guess what? Some 30's STILL don't know how to the use the damn thing.

shadowhunter44441 votes

Yeah, some people are idiots...

aLXrpJL3kq1 votes

All that I got from the tutorial is that tank Ashe is the only way to build Ashe.

MisterHealYoGirl1 votes

The interface tutorial, or the gameplay tutorial? Because there are two.

Austin Covello3 votes

Okay, I'm going to be blunt: The tutorial sucks. Hard. It doesn't even scratch the surface of the game and what you need to do to play it competently. Sometimes it even teaches you the wrong things. For example, if you go ahead of your wave even so much as a pixel, the tutorial admonishes "STAY BEHIND YOUR MINIONS!" Now that's fine if you're playing a ranged attacker like Ashe or Ryze, but what about Garen? That's who I was playing. We all know Garen's a tanky fighter, so we all know he can wade in ahead of the minions and take some hits. But whenever I got into melee range of a creep... "STAY BEHIND YOUR MINIONS!" I got so conditioned by "STAY BEHIND YOUR MINIONS" that I ended up not being able to play anything other than ADC for the longest time. And it's the same tutorial for all three champions being used. Nevermind that Ashe, Ryze, and Garen all have very different playstyles and roles that you can't just do a one-size-fits-all tutorial and expect players to do well at the game.

So here's my idea for a new tutorial:

Basic Tutorial Same tutorial as the howling abyss.

Fighter Tutorial with Garen Takes place at summoner's rift and explains the role of fighters in a MOBA, and fighter items. Also introduces the concept of split-pushing.

Tank Tutorial with Dr. Mundo Takes place at Summoner's rift and explains the role of Tanks in a MOBA and armor/MR items. Also introduces team-fighting and peeling.

Mage Tutorial with Ryze Takes place at Summoner's rift and explains the role of Mages in a MOBA and Magic Pen items. Also introduces comboing with abilities and usage of potions.

Assassin Training with Ahri Takes place at Summoner's rift and explains the role of Assassins in a MOBA and AP items.

Marksman Training with Ashe Takes place at Summoner's rift and explains the role of Marksmen in a MOBA and AD items. Also introduces the concepts of last-hitting and wave-control.

Jungle Training with Warwick, Master Yi, and Sejuani Takes place at Summoner's rift, and explains the differences between jungling playstyles, items, and smite. Also introduces the concepts of ganking and epic monsters with buffs (ie. Dragon and Baron.) Note that you should play this tutorial once with each champion.

Support Training with Alistar, Soraka, and Annie Takes place at Summoner's Rift and explains the differences between support types and corresponding gold-generating items and how they work. Also introduces the concept of warding, vision, map control, and smart-ping. Again, like the jungle tutorial, you should complete this one once with each champion for the full benefit.

Battle Tutorial with any of the above champions Ties all of the other tutorials together in an all-bot full game.

In addition, here are two enrichment tutorials for practice.

Last hitting and lane-freezing practice with any owned or free champion Taking place at howling abyss, you much get as much CS as you can laning against a random bot champion in 10 minutes. Also, no minion, allied or enemy, can be destroyed by a tower. If that happens, or you are killed by the enemy champion, the tutorial ends.

Vision control practice with any owned or free champion Taking place on summoner's rift, this is almost like "ward-ball." You have a sightstone and an unlimited supply of pink wards, as well as an upgraded sweeper lens. You can have up to 15 green wards and 5 pink wards on the map at any given time. You compete against an enemy bot champion to see who can get the most points by placing wards and clearing enemy wards in 10 minutes. 1 point is awarded for placing a green ward. 2 points are awarded for placing a pink ward. An extra bonus point is awarded for placing them in "optimal positions" (gank paths, jungle brushes, lane brushes for greens, if a pink reveals an enemy green, etc). 1 point is awarded for clearing an enemy pink ward; 2 points for revealing and clearing an enemy green. However, a point is deducted for every ward that the enemy bot finds and clears. Whoever has the most points at the end of practice wins.

Tutorial is like teaching babies how to crawl, walk & talk, and you're already pointing out that they should learn to fly a jet plane while singing Gangnam Style.

Stiv12346 votes

Except that babies wont quit life if they feel they have no idea of what theyre doing.

Instead of Ashe, the champion that should be used is Garen. The most basic champion in the game.

Starfish H1 votes

No the tutorial is very useful. See they think your ADC Ashe and build armor when plot twist you have 6 Thornmails and they wasted all the armor kek.

Jungle Lux God1 votes

It teaches you the very basics of the game. The very basics of the game is what it is supposed to teach you.

You don't go into fighting games and expect a tutorial on how to do mixups or advanced comboes. You expect to get basic tutorials on how to move, attack, and do basic comboes.

League of Legends shouldn't have a tutorial that teaches you game knowledge in its basic tutorials because it is too much for a newer player to handle.

Jari1 votes

We aren't demanding advanced tutorials. We're talking about things like not buying thornmail on Ashe. We're talking about things like helping players understand what unique means (Even at 30 some don't. Ever seen the person claim Rabadon passive stacks?) If understanding what a role needs to do is too hard for them, they weren't going to survive to 30 anyways.

OK, hold the phone. When does League's tutorial teach you basic combos? It teaches you "Only level up volley, only use volley" and "buy the only item in the shop".

Maybe it's wrong of me, but I expect someone with the competency to download the game can the hang of right click the ground to move, right click the enemy to attack in 5 seconds, not 5 separate "Good, now..." segments. The time they could save by cutting that out of the tutorial could be used to explain how in the world you know what items are good to pick on your champion. Not the best items per say, but "Ability power items boost skills that have a green number in the tooltip" would be nice!

Jungle Lux God1 votes

For explaining what items are good on your champion, we have the recommended items section of the store.

It practically feeds you what items are good for your specific champion.

DrCyanide1 votes

Feeds your what items are good, but no explanation to help you know why.

I just remember as a noob playing a few games with Teemo's recommended build, then deviating from it. After all, the reason Nashor's Tooth was good on Teemo was it made you attack really fast, so I just had to find other items that gave more attack speed. Hello Runnan's Hurricane! It's not the worst mistake I could have made, but I was nearly level 30 before anyone explained what ability power even was to me. I've pushed for a better item tutorial ever since.

Jungle Lux God1 votes

New players shouldn't be deviating from the recommended items items at all. As you get better and better, you should be naturally figuring out what kind of items you should be building on your champion without the help of a tutorial.

Teemo's kind of a weird example because he has such a weird build path compared to others, but someone like Annie has a whole bunch of AP items in her recommended items list. Gee, that probably means she wants to build a lot of AP! Or Ashe has a lot of AD items in her recommended items. That probably means she build AD!

Austin Covello1 votes

Teemo is weird, period, because he's a jack of all trades. You can build him any way you want as long as you know what you want beforehand and plan ahead and work around the Teemo taunt and late-game drop-off.

linkmastr0011 votes

Are you counting the intro bots with this?

shadowhunter44441 votes

For one thing, Intro bots are awesome. That mode really fixed a lot of the problems the tutorial had.

For another, I agree with the whole Thornmail Ashe thing, I suppose they should have made it so that you could possibly die to trundle. Maybe it should tell you to build lifesteal.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

Given that the tutorial was designed for people who have never played a moba before i think its pretty good at what it is meant to do. What we really need is a more advanced system to teach people about the game as they level up.

I read a red post a while back that said the reason why you build thornmail on ashe was so she had enough armour so that the minions wouldn't damage you and you couldn't die to them before you figured out how to AA. Its an interesting insight into why the tutorial was designed and why it was designed the way it was.
