Does morellonomicon really have to be that gold efficient regardless of grevious wounds?

TyroneWatermelon··15 votes·1,319 views

its stats and mana regen are so good and gold efficient that it doesn't even matter if the enemy are "packing large regeneration" or not. wasn't the purpose of MYMU was to create diversity between items in the right situation?

The grievous wounds is practically useless anyway because of the % HP gating. Nobody actually buys it for grievous wounds

Talisid3 votes

Which makes it even more frustrating for me as a DrMundo player because people get buy an efficient item that counters me hard and they don't even have to change their build path at all.

It's excellent for highly burst-oriented mages like Veigar or Annie. Non-tanks that survive the initial burst are likely below 40% HP.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Below 40% as in dead. Tanks that survive the initial burst are Likely below 40% hp. In addtition to mr Itemisation being bad most defensive items are gonna be armor based some of them with hp on a tank or bruiser

I never said it was a situation that happened often :P

That is exactly what the word Likely means. that it will happen more often than not.

Omnomnomicon doesn't even have mana regen anymore.

400 mana + 20% max mana on kills/assists.

That's still not mana regen just Athen's old passive.

But you get the point right?

It Hertz When IP1 votes

The point was that it has no mana regen. The passive you bring up in response is on kills/assists. If I as a midlaner avoid dying in lane, my opponent is left with flat mana only.

but ur not always going to kill someone to get mana back thats like saying dangerous game gives health regen. you just have to kill someone to get it! Oh wait I have no mana to kill him so how am i gonna regen?

LordGeovanni1 votes

It does but the health regen from dangerous game doesnt swing fight hard for any one but low cooldowns spells assassins or aoe spell assassins. the rest of people may end up just surviveing an ignite and recalling

INoble KnightI1 votes

Yeah I get the point but to be honest Omnomnomicon needs to be like this cause Athen's was gutted so hard. I miss the things were before the MYMU but whatever and the GW mechanic on it almost doesn't even matter to most people cause it hardly effects fights.

Is there not mana regenerateing

wasn't the purpose of MYMU was to create diversity between items in the right situation?

No, it wasn't. And if Riot says otherwise, that's just lying.

It Hertz When IP1 votes

No, it isn't lying. Bear in mind that the "purpose" of the MYMU and the actual end result needn't be the same.

Vistha Kai3 votes

You don't create diversity by practically removing an item and making another a must-buy for 100% of champions who prefered the removed item.

I'll give it to you, though. If it isn't lying, then it's a delusion.

THAT would be a more accurate word. FYI I do agree with you on your sentiment, was just contesting your choice of words.

"In the long run we plan to add another 20% CDR AP item" paraphrased- meddler They intended Athene's to be for supports and support-ish mid laners and they need to fill that hole, and Morellonomicon isn;t MANDATORY on all mages

Vistha Kai2 votes

And yet there are countless better options for supports anyway.

Not to mention this item is utter garbage for mid laners.

LordGeovanni2 votes

Supports used to take Athene's just like mages now nobody touches the item

If it only had the AP and CDR people would still buy it because it is the only AP item that gives so much of those stats. 100 and 20% are unmatched. Everything else is icing on the cake.

This is the point!

Snowman Arc1 votes

And then, it only just does that. There are other items that do other things better. Rylai's for example makes you tankier, has the same AP and also has a very powerful slow, especially on champions who can abuse it (Azir, Viktor, Orianna, Cassio, Malzahar etc).

Deathcap and voistaff increase damage way more.

Luden's Echo offer more burst and MS. Lichbane offers slightly less AP, Mana and CDR, but bring in way more damage and MS.

It's not just black and white. On some champions, Morello isn't really that important, especially since pretty much every AP item nowadays has its own CDR, you buy Ionian boots for 10% more CDR and the lower CDR on summoner spells and you go with 10% CDR in your runes too.

10% CDR from runes + 10% CDR from boots, already having 20%. Given that you might build Zhonya's / Abyssal / Lichbane and maybe even having a blue buff means you can get 30 / 40% CDR without Morello.

Personally, I have so much more room for flexible itemization (started including Rylai's / Zhonya's instead of Morello in my builds and it has helped me wayyy too much controlling fights or surviving) ever since I started using 10% CDR runes. Try it.

Sir Fuzzi2 votes

Right, but they completely removed Athene's from mage itemization, which was kind of asinine because it got to be the defensive version of Morello, which got the offense stats instead. They had instances in which they were and were not useful, and enjoy a healthy dichotomy.

Now they rolled all the mana gen onto Morello, and Athene's has a skill gate on half of its power budget. Punish the cost of Morello, which is now the only Mage-based mana regen and not only will its utility fade out as 800 bucks accomplishes the same utility (GW) on AD item 3123, but there won't be a good mana rush anymore. Then energy and resourceless will take leads anywhere but bot, and we'll be in an even worse position.

The alternative to me is pulling GW onto its own AP item that feels more well-rounded (IE like Exec, no fluff stats-- just straight damage) so that Morello keeps its mana status, and then a GW item gets to feel a bit more standalone and less out-of-place on resourceless AP. And something with an internal cooldown instead of an HP gate, so it feels like a mage function and less like a 'do or don't.'

Samflash31 votes

What if they moved it to Luden's Echo?

It Hertz When IP1 votes

In combination with the lightning bolt passive? To make it not overly gold efficient, the cost would be substantial.

It deserves its own AP item.

HazyCloud71 votes

Zhonyas lost 30 AP and and Abyssal lost 10 AP while going up significantly in cost. The extra 20 AP on Morello is to alleviate the loss of AP from other items a little bit.

Edit: Ah aatrox main, my condolences to you. For what its worth I wouldn't mind if they removed the grevious wounds and moved it onto another item. Just don't touch the AP.

It doesn't matter who I main(as long as it isn't Yasuo or Vayne)it's just for an item that suppost to be picked against heavy sustain team, gets picked regardless, without losing anyway. For example if you get the mortal reminder to counter sustain, you lose up to 15% bonus damage increase, and if you prefer to get phantom dancer instead of statikk shiv/hurricane you lose waveclear, since that's the item's purpose Overall I think morello should lose 10% cdr or some of its gold efficiency to not be a "core" item for every mage

HazyCloud71 votes

Lots of AP items have CDR but a lot of those are the low ap utility items. Items like Void Staff, Deathcap, Ludens, Archangels, RoA, GLP don't provide CDR. Other classes don't have to sacrifice damage to build CDR so I'm not sure why we should have to, particularly when CDR is more important for mages than any other class.

Marksmen can get up to 30% CDR from Essence Reaver, an item that provides high AD + 20% crit + mana sustain. Fighters and Bruisers have Black Cleaver + Ghostblade + Deaths Dance + Trinity Force. Plus the CDR they can get when they decide to itemize resistances.

If its too efficient the mana on kill/assist, flat mana or the GW passive are the ways to hit it. Not the AP or CDR. There's nothing wrong with the item being core on every mage, it provides AP, mana and CDR which every mage needs. Should we change Void Staff because every mage builds it too?

Snowman Arc1 votes

Morello isn't core on every mage. There are mages who utilize it well, like Lux, Ziggs, Veigar, and then there are others like Viktor, Cassio, Azir, who use Rylai's instead for the utility.

Mirkhail1 votes

The purpose of item 3165 is and always was to offer an early game rush for most mages, AP CDR and mana are a must for most of then, the grievious wound bonus is not really a necessity but it's the only source of grievous wounds for mages and have a % hp gating, you can move it to other mage items if needed,

Before the MYMU item 3165 and item 3174 had a similar function, early game cdr, mana ,ap with little difference. Instead of a choice between the two, most mages picked the stronger at the moment,

So the mymu made item 3165 the definitive CDR,AP,MANA item while item 3174 became a support item.

I think the idea was that mages would rush item 3165 or item 3027 or item 3003 based on the specific mage.

SwiftKitten881 votes

um.. as a player who players mid lane mages Ziggs Orianna Syndra , i ALWAYS rush this item first. and it has nothing to do with grievous wounds. that barely does anything anyways because it only kicks in at 35%, at which point any mage can pretty much combo you dead anyways.

Snowman Arc1 votes

I don't think it's as cost efficient as you make it out to be. Sure, on paper, it seems very good, maybe it is, and it's only 2900 (?) gold.

But you need to see what other items a mage can build and why in some cases, Morello isn't as important and I will use Viktor as an example, since he is my main.

Before the mage update, I usually went Viktor item / morello / lichbane / deathcap / voidstaff / boots. After the update and the changes to his laser, ult and Q, I had to get Rylai's, because of the delayed 2nd proc on the laser and the delayed ult procs, meaning I had to slow people down to get my whole damage off. This means I had to drop one of my other items. I still consider 40% CDR Viktor better than any other Viktor build, but I had to change my build to get 30% CDR (10% scaling from runes), because I dropped Morello for Rylai's, and it seems to do the trick better. I consider deathcap, voidstaff and lichbane core on Viktor, so it had to be Morello.

My point is that Morello is a really good item (100AP, 20%CDR, GV, mana regen, flexible build path), but there are other items that offer things that can be more useful in specific situations or champion. For Viktor, Rylai's + 30% CDR seems more important than Morello + 40% CDR. Azir doesn't get Morello. Old Ryze didn't get it either. Cassio, Kassadin, Anivia and so many other champs don't need it, because they either have other core items (mainly tear / rod of ages), which means that after those items, they need to go into voidstaff / deathcap, or there are other items who work better on them.

Let's say you have a Lux and somehow you get fed 1 or 2 kills. It's better to go for Luden's Echo, because the damage you deal with it is so much, that the Morello trade-off wouldn't be worth it.

It all depends on the situation and the champion. Sure, it's good as an overall item, but adjust the build path to whatever suits best. Personally, I loved this item, but lately, I've grown out of it, since I saw how powerful Rylai's is. I still build it on a lot of champs though, and occasionally still go for Morello instead of lichbane or Rylais, depending on the situation.
