My Only Complaint About Hextech Crafting

Now don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for the free stuff and everything. I also agree that it's fine to have limitations on the free stuff. However I think one limitation in particular is a little excessive. That one limitation is the fact that once you've earned a free chest while playing a champion you can't earn another while playing that champ for the rest of the season. Practically an entire year. This creates a few annoyances that aren't fully necessary given how unproductive individual chests can actually be towards unlocking things and the fact that an S- or higher is needed to get them anyway. I'm not saying the limitation should be completely removed, I'm just saying it should be shorter because of the following minor issues:

  • If you and you friends are all playing your favorites champs and one of you get an S rank, none of you can use your fav champs to unlock chests for the rest of the year, drastically reducing your chances of getting more chests. This isn't even restricted to people who play too few champs. In just a month you lock out four favorites, eight in two, by the third month even a pro will have sealed all the champs he regularly plays. Sure this encourages finding more friends, but finding new people to play with that have their favorites also available for chests is not a simple thing. Even then, you are having that new person carry you through champs you don't normally play, making it harder for him to carry you.
  • This is a bigger issue for lower skill players that don't have the mechanics to branch out successfully. Imagine being a new player with few champions, finally finding a champ you are really good with, only to be sealed away from unlocking a chest with them for an entire year. Again not saying the limit should be gone, but this would feel awful for a new player.
  • Certainly this encourages branching out to more champions, but it also discourages it to a degree. Why play a champion you don't normally play any longer than it takes to get a chest instead of playing your preferred champion? Neither will get you a chest. A shorter period of lock out would solve this as you are going to play that fallback champ more often.
  • Taking one of your favs and by fluke having a bad game but someone in your pre-made getting an S and locking out that favorite from earning for a season would feel really bad. For a whole year you cannot get that chance to shine, unlocking a chest for you and your pals with the champ you can normally S rank with. Feels bad man.
  • Also getting multiple S ranks on the same pre-made feels wasteful. This is the most minor of the issues though.

All of these could be mitigated by reducing the lockout period somehow. It doesn't have to be by a lot. It's just that a whole year is a bit on the long side.

TL;DR: Winning a free chest on your favorite champs locking you out from doing so again for an entire season is way too long a lockout and creates unnecessary issues that feel a bit bad and outright over-restrict newer players.

The system is easy to abuse if you have at least one friend. You can get only one chest for your main but you can give "free" chest to your friends with him, then you swap. Say im good with nocturne (im not) i play nocturne my friend plays randomchampion --> I get S we both get chest i play nocturne again my friend plays DIFERENT random champion --> I get S, I dont get chest but he does. i play nocturne again my friend plays DIFERENT random champion number 2 --> I get S, I dont get chest but he does. We swap i play random champion, my friend plays his main --> he get S, we both get a chest

After 2-3 month this will be normalized. I will play nocturne each monday(i assume a new chest is unlocked on mondays) to unlock my friend freshly unlocked chest, and then he will play his main for me.

yes that is true but also i just dont like the way it feels to open those chests

on pbe it felt new and cool but rlly after a week it was just the same old boring opening and nothing exciting like the CSGO openning or any other unboxings

there is nothing rare about anything u unlock

infact the chance u have of getting something u want is so low u might as wel just straight up buy the skin and not the chests

its just another thing to get people to buy rp

what about those people who have a billion IP cuz they got everything in the game?

The most consistent advice people give for getting good at this game: play a small pool of champs and master them Rito logic: Play as many different champs as possible to maximize the amount of loot you are predisposed to want (because free!)

I started off trying to defend Riot in their current scheme, then I realized that in order to get every chest for a season, roughly one year, that would require 48 different champs. I have always preferred a varied champ pool to maining, so much so that I only just got a mastery 5 champ today, and only because I figured it'd be easy to get an S on Naut. Despite my variance that still seems like a hell of a lot of champions, I doubt I have gotten S's on even half that many so far.

That said I'm still worried that the keys don't drop fast enough to keep up with the chest, at least when you play solo. I've already gotten all 4 of my chests today, but I have only gotten 2 key fragments. I would have figured the keys would be easier to acquire, either on par with chests, or slightly more frequent tho not guaranteed.

Thing is they are trying to encourage you to make a lot of friends so you can have a ton of premades with a huge variation of champs. Not saying it is perfect, but that seems to be the intent of it.

It's free stuff that wasn't offered before. This is such a goofy thing to be complaining about. You're whining about "restrictions" on a freebie reward/incentive system that gives players the chance to get some free swag just for playing.

How about limit it just for week or two? Or just a month? Cause chests refresh by week which would make sense and would fit imo.

The Bearded Bard3/17/2016, 6:27:17 PM1 votes

I think they should make it so every 5th S rank on you specifically gives you and only you a chest.

LordKentravyon3/17/2016, 9:14:39 PM1 votes

I disagree I think of all the limitations that's the BEST one . As it forces you to be diverse and be good at doing so.

I think the 1 chest per week should go. 4 a month is perfectly fair but it shouldn't matter if i get them over 4 weeks, 4 days or 4 hours.

My only problem is that keys are too rare

I got the 4 chests within 4 games its the key rarity that is obnoxious

As I understand it if you're in a premade with (say) two other people, and your buddy gets a Malphite S and you never play Malphite, all three of you get your "Malphite chest" for the season. I'm also pretty sure that even if Malphite already has their chest, the other two of you still get yours.

(I'm not sure what happens if all three of you get S's.)

they should have implement IP into this hextech system but all they did was introduce another form of useless currency for players who already have all champs and runes/pages and what not, guess I'll start saving up all my free champion blue essence on top my 250k IP....................

Nekusen3/17/2016, 12:17:16 AM1 votes

ahh, the joy of playing 30 different champs

With just $5 worth of RP, I got the Ward of Draven, and this. http://i.imgur.com/rmmj995.png

So I'll just get one chest a year. I can live with that.
