Alright, so let's just get this out of the way first. Yes, as of the making of this video I finished Silver 4 in Ranked. I jumped into Ranked late last season not realizing how close the end of the season was and then did not bother trying to advance when they announced I only had a few weeks to do so. I'm not some high elo player and probably don't belong anywhere outside gold at best right now. I am not hyper-skilled, but I do have a reasonable understanding of the mechanics of the game and put the time in to try to get better, analyze my weak points, and learn everything I can about everything. I also have played Caitlyn a lot. For a long time. She's been 80-90% of my adc games since I started playing.

Now let's get on to the TL; DR of the rest of this stupidly long post: With Jhin coming out Caitlyn once again has very limited gameplay identity and is essentially an inferior Jinx or Jhin, bringing pretty much nothing but poor scalings to the game. Her traps being nearly impossible to trigger is a major issue.

Going into more detail, Caitlyn's weak point has always been the fact that while one of the simplest champions to play mechanically she has always relied on shutting the enemy down early. If she doesn't do that she scales horribly in comparison. The difficulty in playing her comes not from anything in her kit, it comes from her being worse than many other ADCs. This would normally be perfectly fine and I have no issue with it really. However, when coupled with another, persistent issue (ironically always coming from gypsylord) it is problematic.

Pre-rework there was a big problem with Caitlyn's gameplay identity. It was called Jinx. Jinx was practically everything Caitlyn was but with better scaling. Long auto-range? Check. Long range poke move with a wind-up? Check, though Cait's passes though minions. Trap for zone control? Check, though Jinx trades duration for speed and greater area coverage. Long range execute ultimate? Check, but Jinx's is an AoE skill-shot with longer range. Pretty much the entire kit served all the same purposes and you could play them pretty much the same way. The only major kit difference was that Jinx has no net to escape. However, the Caitlyn rework gave Cait a clearer identity and defined what she brings to the table.

And then Jhin enters the scene. Now don't misunderstand, Jhin is fine. I have no issues right now with the champion itself. I ever understand that it's okay for there to be multiple snipers in the game from a conceptual standpoint. However... why the hell would you play Caitlyn anymore? Her kit? Jinx has the same kit other than the trap interactions. Being a sniper? Jhin fulfills that fantasy better than Caitlyn in every single way. Zone control sniper? Jhin does that too, not as well, but not comparatively bad enough considering he has fewer weaknesses. You can argue that his traps don't root without a skillshot, but neither do Cait's because her traps are terrible.

My main point is that Caitlyn doesn't really seem to offer anything that other champs don't do better. The only thing she has of her own is a long auto-attack range and a net-gun. She just doesn't have much identity anymore with Jhin coming out and Jinx already being in the game.

All this would probably be tolerable if her traps didn't suck so much. I would be totally fine with power nerfs if the trigger range wasn't so stupidly narrow. It doesn't even have to be as large as it used to be. It just needs to actually exist. I've trapped paths so that the trap model fills literally 90% of them and watched people walk right through. I've built trap forts filling 90% of the lane to provide teamfight advantage and had none of them trigger in a teamfight taking place right there.

I've played Caitlyn for years and I'm wondering why I should keep playing her.

I'm in a similar position as you. I was so pumped for the new Cait skin, but I honestly don't think I am gonna bother with it anymore. I played Cait for a couple years and randomly decided to get Jinx one day. I was amazed how Jinx seemed to do similar things as Cait, but is just a flat-out better ADC. I don't wanna jump the gun on Jihn, but I am jealous of his ultimate and invisible trap. I've always hoped they would rework Cait's ultimate and thought that it would be one of the things done with the recent Marksman update.

I don't know what it is, but Caitlyn is rarely meta. She just always seems to be a bit less powerful compared to many other ADCs at any given time. She was actually in the best place she's been in a long time, after the armor pen was added to headshot back in June of this year and then with the buff to her W in patch 5.18.

One of the major things I don't understand is that she is supposed to be a zoning adc, but has no zoning potential early game anymore. Before you could take 1 rank in traps and maintain pretty good trap presence in the lane. Currently, you start with 3 traps, but with the 45 sec recharge time at rank 1 coupled with the 90 second trap duration, you are very limited in maintaining traps in the lane. And hope they don't have a braum/leona/nautilus/blitz supp or they'll just step on your traps and shrug off the headshot. I suppose you could level W early, but that would leave you with a very weak Q.

I honestly think Caitlyn is close to being balanced, but is just a bit underpowered compared to most ADCs. I guess her base attack range makes her pretty difficult to balance, because if she is overtuned at all, she can probably completely dominate bot lane just by outranging people. I still don't get the 10% attk speed nerf when the attack speed / crit items are so core for adcs right now.

remove her 6 attacks head shot from her passive, and give her ability to head shot once from 1300 range to each champion hit by her Q.

They should make it so you can instantly trap a target you hit with your net. I dunno. seems logical, you throw a freaking net on someone so it should be easy to trap.

Honestly, when Jhin was revealed I was excited...then I saw his kit...Jhin's ult is what my fiance said he wanted Caitlyn's ult to be about a year ago lol I even made a pos about it a year ago. I would rather have had Riot put Jhin's ult and traps on Caitlyn rather than leave Caitlyn even more behind....

Or giving her very high mana regen so she can spam abilities (or making her manaless, though i generally don't like the concept of not having a resource)

ok look at it this way, with so many people comparing cait and jhin, lets see what we have here.

Graves and Lucian PRE rework graves, they were the SAME champion, Q farm and damage, w thing that only helps combo, e dash, and ult for obscene damage. that is the state cait is in now sadly and I am fine with that, graves and lucian fought over who was the better dasher for an entire season and after lucians nerfs, graves was top tier, and now that he was worked over lucian has come back and has his identity back.

Cait is due for a change, and i think cait needs to not be a sniper, but a semi auto rifle marksman, med-high range and keeps the same idea of a role, but is not a true sniper, thematically i never saw cait as a sniper due to her having a net and trap for crap sake, and a bullet spreading to the size of an eagle is BS in every respect of a sniper role. Headshot... woo, anyone can shoot in the head with a gun, not specific to snipers only...

Problems with caitlyn and why some stuff jhin got shoulda been caitlyns

  1. Caitlyn can't decide between being an AA or an AD caster type adc. She has her E->Q->AA combo but her passive isn't a "Filler AA" type but takes persistent AA to activate and including cait has no decent AS steroid makes it even worst. Unlike corki/mf/lucian/jhin/graves. Jhin's Ammo but gains AD for AS and Crit shoulda been also for cait but she could keep her ignore 50%(Maybe more) bonus armor on the 6th and final shot instead of missing HP jhin has on 4th. (Last 2 shots could also have 50% more range for cait too)

  2. Cait's Traps should have worked more like Jhin/Nid and been either stealthed or harder to see with a large radius to activate

  3. Cait's Net should have it's Speed increased, Range Increased and Distance traveled increased at least back to the old amount it was. For cait who relies on E->Q->AA her net is too unreliable

  4. Her ultimate is just bland damage which doesn't even scale with crit or have another effect tired to it. It's decent since the CD is moderate but it should have crit scaling for something blockable by anyone and those who block it, unless the entire enemy team is squishy, won't be too affected.

  5. Jhin's Passive is cait 2.0, Jhin's traps while not being as immediate are stil cait 2.0 since they can land more often, and Jhin's ultimate are Cait 4.0. I don't want jhin nerfed or changed at all don't get me wrong. Also if some changes were made to cait to make her more jhin-like since that would make them carbon copies, however jhin just does what cait wants to do. So cait does need some type of change.

  6. And I forgot to mention her "Range" means nothing since it's gated by 2 hard to land skills (W and E) and because of this jinx and trist have it better (Although trist does what jinx does but better)

I remember reading somewhere that Jhin's kit was originally meant to emulate a sniper acting as a spotter, but it doesn't really do that and his theme doesn't match that. You know whose them fits that and could use more identity? Caitlyn, the police sniper.

Some folks have thought being a sniper really didn't fit with the idea of being the sheriff of a town, but what if she were more of a supporty, spotter sniper like how snipers support squads in police and the military? Rather than being very focused on shooting dudes in the head, I think a rework to focus around granting allies bonuses to damage centered around a mechanic of granting vision. Sort of like a spotter sniper. The only issue might be that the bonus damage from the ult channel might make it way too good for supporting dives.

So I have something interesting to add to this... I used to be an AP Caitlyn main, and was very very disappointed to hear about her rework removing the ap scaling and damage from her w as well as nerfing the damage on her net. Now with AP Jhin, he is basically a munch stronger old AP Caitlyn, and can even be played mid because he actually has waveclear. His traps can be stacked and LITERALLY oneshot everyone, this applies to both his AD and AP builds, seeing as how his potential AD is absolutely insane and his traps have a 1.3% AD ratio and a 1.0% AP ratio. With his w as long as he isn't braindead and can land skillshots, he's guaranteed an aoe oneshot if people walk onto stacked traps. His ult is also a superior form of Caitlyn's played both AD and AP, as AP Caitlyn the most I ever got from her ult damage wise was it's strong base damage and maybe a ludens proc. With Jhin I get a shit ton of execute damage, so technically it still scales even if I don't build AD, albeit from the enemies missing health. His Q Also has hybrid scaling and would act as his AP waveclear mid. His kit is INSANELY overloaded with scalings and base damage and honestly I think he's insanely overpowered. However, I am extremely excited for an AP Caitlyn alternative that will ACTUALLY be viable. The only real differences between Caitlyn and Jhin are the reload and lack of range on Jhin, and the whole not critting normally but being able to have 700+ AD with a normal build. However Jhin is gonna be LITERALLY oneshotting people so...

I feel like Caitlyn really needs a full scale rework at this point, because as you said soon there will be no reason to play her over anyone else.
