Champion Roadmap: January 2018

Now let’s move on to the next big VGU that will be stepping out of the shroud: Akali. Akali has always been a beloved champion, but she hasn’t aged particularly well. Her assassin pattern is very all-or-nothing, so it can be difficult for her to succeed unless she snowballs off of early kills. We want to give her more options for success by playing up her ability to hide in plain sight. We think her Shroud is an awesome and iconic ability and want to push it even further.

Akali also has trouble laning against a large portion of the modern League cast, so we’ll be looking to give her a stronger laning pattern that should bring her more in line with the current needs of solo-lane champions. This will allow us to reduce her snowball potential, as she won’t have to be as dependent on early kills to succeed. Overall, we are pretty satisfied with Akali’s high-level theme of a “Ninja Assassin,” but the current execution is a bit generic. We’ll be looking to add a couple more unique traits to Akali to elevate her beyond this common theme. As for her narrative, we want to go with an approach similar to the one we took for the Gangplank VGU, meaning we want to extend her narrative rather than rework it. Instead of a new Akali, this will be a tale of growth and change. That’s it for today! It’s still a bit early to talk about the VGU after Akali, but let’s just say that it has been getting a bit chilly for the Champions Team lately… "

Akali buffs: Increase the chance of seeing a nip slip when looking at her side boob by 10%.

In all seriousness, she would dominate her top lane counters if she were to get buffs.

The laning fix is necessary. Honestly, it'd fix a lot of her issues. Or at least let Riot fix them.

Making her less reliant on her ult to start getting kills will allow Riot to make her do less damage once she gets her ult, because she won't have to snowball near as hard to make up for the 5 lost levels.

Think of Akali as she is now, when mid: She gets her ass kicked levels 1 through 5. Once she hits 6, she smashes her opponent's face in, getting a kill in one or two engages, at most. She needs a kill shortly after, otherwise she'll be an assassin playing catchup: Worthless. So Riot has to put a lot of damage into levels 6 and 7, since other assassins would have been getting kills at level 4 at the latest. She needs to catch up.

So. Make her lane smoother, and she doesn't need to snowball as drastically at levels 6 and 7 to be viable. As it is, she's basically required to get a kill (or three) on you at level 6. Without this, she has a larger window in which she can make herself viable, meaning Riot can distribute the chance throughout that entire time.

Basically, she'll be harder to fight pre-6, in exchange for having Counterplay at 6 when mid (beyond the obvious solution of stomping her in so hard that you're already level 8 or 9 when she hits 6). Which will encourage her to not go top as much. Which will shut up the people who are still whining about that...

It should make Akali more fun for everyone involved.

In mid maybe, in toplane she destroys pretty much everyone with no retaliation possible due to shroud. Her trading and sustain are actually insane.
