All Hail Swain, Noxian Grand...Support?

Having played a fair amount of the rework at mid, top, and support, I absolutely believe that new Swain 's best position is actually as a support.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not expecting to see him in LCS anytime soon. It's utterly unlikely that a pro team would take him over an unkillable minotaur, team-invulnerizing fashion plate, spell-shielding necro-witch, gigantifying pixie, yanking-through-walls-robot, champion-swallowing catfish, stealing-to-safety undead chain-rattler and so on. He has no ability at all to protect or save his ADC, and thus is almost certainly not going to be a pro support.

However, speaking of Thresh - Swain does have the same ability to make space in the botlane very, very uncomfortable for the enemy duo. Most of us have experienced the way that our undead reaper dominates any reasonably won botlane via his ability to run ahead of the wave and make the enemy champions unable to farm through fear of a landed Death Sentence. Well, new Nevermove can even do that through the wave at the beginning of the game, and while a successful Nevermove certainly doesn't inspire the same terror as a landed chain, it's much, much easier to hit, and heals Swain as well. And Vision of Empire - so terrible, mana-costly, and easy-to-dodge in any solo lane - excels in botlane as a zoning tool, source of vision, and long-range blaster on fleeing or recalling enemy champions.

Again, don't get me wrong. No actual protection abilities mean that he's probably not going to be a real, pro-level support. (Then again, Blitzcrank can't protect his ADC either, and still sees pro-level play.)

In any case, in solo queue, support is definitely the position Swain feels least underpowered in. It makes a curious kind of sense, since his waveclear was nerfed to pieces, but when he supports that doesn't really matter at all.

I could see him as a pocket pick against certain squishy botlanes, or in a team composition that could use an extra source of damage in the support position.

Kind of a botch on the thematics, though.

The Noxian Grand General! One of the most brilliant military minds of Runeterra! A man without fear!

...currently to be found scampering around botlane, polishing Draven's axes .

Oh, well.

Makes sense.

"You stood by me when I was outcast, so I stood by you when you were drunk."

That was one of my exact comments when trying him out a few times. Of course I kinda play every champ support so what do I know?

Annie and Fiddlesticks were both top tier supports at different times for the LCS, and neither of them can effectively protect their ADC either, at least any more than Blitzcrank can.

It's certainly possible that Swain isn't good enough to be LCS material, but don't write off the possibility of a support with no abilities that assist allies to make waves in the LCS.

Lots of mages come with utility, but I agree that Swain's is the most exemplary thing in his kit. Perhaps with some tuning he can become a support that makes both mage "supports" (Lux item 3089 ) and those who want to bring some utility that's more than one stun/snare.

My first game with him was actually support, and it wasn't half bad.

Yk, as a Swain top, I won 8/10 top 6/10 Mid 7/10 supp and 7/10 with jungle Swain. I Played with Spellbook and I think he is good at the moment. I Do not see anyone else playing get these stats though. Im was only Plat 5 last Season. Idk why I win so much.

Don’t forget that his Passive’s Pull effect is used on any immobilized champion. So pair him with Ashe Caitlyn Jhin Jinx Varus Vayne Xayah and you can have the, “No, you’re staying HERE bitch,” bot lane party.

Swain rework is a disaster on all fronts. This is bad enough to deserve a revert.

What does a support Swain build?
