So, played a bit of Malzahar today
Another minirework of Malzahar has come out, with the purpose of shoving him out of bot lane. I'm not going to talk about the other skills, even if the modified ultimate would require some thoughts, but I'm going to talk about W, the focus of the rework. The main thing they did was taking some power out of it and putting into the other skills, by removing the auto-swarm mechanic and instead requiring the use of other spells first, a bit of a recall to the original Malzahar. They still went for the swarm mechanic, though, and I have nothing to complain about it. The most prominent thing, though, is that they are squishier, also adding the mechanic of instadeath if hit by autos. This makes them completely useless in bot lane where not only there are champions conceptually reliant on autoattacks, the marksmen, but there are also two enemies, which means it's easier to kill all 3 of them (and calling less of them it's obviously not worth it). Now, I don't have problems even with that. With the few games I played (in midlane), the squishiness was balanced by the reliable swarm, and the more damage in other skills would greatly make up for eventual lost voidlings. Although, there's one change that I would like to see, that is actually a very minimal one: make the voidling instadeath an on-attack effect and not an on-hit. What does it mean? An on-attack applies only on effective autoattacks, while on-hits apply on everything with the special clause. Guinsoo's Rageblade passive, for example, works as an on-attack, and I don't remember if there are other similar instances of it. But why? With this change there would be two consequences:
- on-hit clause abilities, like Ezreal or Gangplank's Q.
- Runaan's Hurricane. In the first case, voidling would be able to survive, maybe, in early game, treating these spells like all the other spells in game. Come mid game they will probably have at least a Sheen, so voidling will most likely die anyway, so it wouldn't be a big deal. But still it would give voidlings some breath in early if, for some reason, you are going to fight against this type of champions (not necessarily as lane opponent). But most importantly, the second case. Being shot by autos is fine, even in late game. But at least, please, don't let an item make a spell completely useless, especially if it's a core one. Voidlings being shot by random Hurricane bolts feels too much oppressive. They will surely die anyway, but at least make them being worth to be focused, at least making the marksman losing some time to actually target them. Statikk's Shiv already instagib them, but at least it's through a fair damage calculation, and not because a marksman in bot lane rushed Runaan's Hurricane for whatever reason and made the enemy mid laner lose one spell in skirmishes and team fights before the 10 minutes mark.
