Jeezus. I mained mid last season and I remember my mages had trouble with the likes of Talon (pre-nerf). While I haven't played much mid recently (seems to be a hard lane to get right now), I've been in games with a Zed, and they can sometimes get out of hand, and he seems pretty op in even semi-competent hands.
That said, I was skeptical about the original poster's premise that mages can't play against Zed, period. I looked up recent (like earlier today) matches with Zed on LolKing replay to see what how he fares in games with excellent players.

Well damn. It looks like even these top players have a really hard time playing against Zed. Even a couple Lissandra games where she goes even or loses. Looks like the team with Zed won 8 out of the 10 most recent games (small sample I know), and the Zed usually had a pretty nasty KDA, especially if it's against a "typical" mage (e.g., Nid, Xerath, Ori, etc.).
I know every champ is supposed to have favorable matchups, but this seems a little more than just favorable. Looks like the games are pretty much decided at champ select, and this is after the 5.2 nerf to his attack speed.
I really try to avoid complaining or whining about Riot's decisions, but in light of the some more recent nerfs that have gone out (Corki, Fid, Sona?), I just don't understand why they wouldn't scale back Zed a little bit more. Maybe it's just time to learn to play him haha!
