Runes are a chore to do because they're too much reading

Maybe I'm in the minority here but I really don't enjoy doing runes. They're too much reading when they all just nickel and dime everything. Why can't they each do one simple thing that's significant so they can be easily stated in one line?

And here is why we got this kids-like runes in this current state. Kids can't take time to read and think about things. Better give em more damage everywhere while pretending it's something different

The ones available just aren't worth the reading. I read a russian novel in champ select and I end up with like +.01% max health that increases orthogonally to the tangent of my kda but only when I'm a melee champion otherwise the scaling is increased by the ratio of the amount of times my jgler gets executed by a raptor camp to the average warding score of my previous 3 games.

I mean even of you were going to say Russian translation of the runes is long (which it most definitely would be), it's still hardly comparable to the translation of your opening thread.

"Reading a russian novel" is a saying which means an excessively large amount of reading, in case you didn't know. It was hyperbole.

You actually don't know what the saying refers to. It has nothing to do with a russian translation. It's derived from classic russian novels like War And Peace, Anna Karenina, Crime And Punishment, etc which are all notoriously long.

You shouldn't play league if you cannot be bothered to read the tool tips of what you are using let alone what your allies and opponents are using. If you could, you would know what, exactly, synchronizes best with the champion you want to play and how you intend to play them. You're even allotted any number of item presets to create where you can view, in full detail, all the items you might consider using with your champions and read, carefully, what each item does.

You know that probably is a lot of people's solution. But weren't the new runes supposed to be this fun choice you make before every game? Instead they've become this burden that everyone offloads to a 3rd party aggregator website. If that's not the sign of a good design I don't know what is.

But weren't the new runes supposed to be this fun choice you make before every game?

That was the rhetoric, yeah, but of course it isn't true. There will always be an optimal path that eclipses all others. The only situational tree is resolve secondary. Is this gonna be a hard lane? If yes, take bone plating and second wind. If no, continue as normal.

i cant move wtf1 votes

Not true at all that runes have to have an optimal path for every champion. Runes can be designed to be conditional based on the state of the game or the state the player expects it to be. Will certain champs have rune sets that are better in general for them, yea absolutely, but that doesn't mean they can't be diverse enough to make other paths optimal for less common game states.

Take the time to make Runes for specific champions, then save them. Put in the title of your Rune something that reminds you for what it should be used.

In all honesty, there isn't much to read...if you don't want to bother with all the Runes, just take the presets, although it's clearly not good and there is combinations that aren't there.

Maybe there should be a "simpler" version of the Runes, but...well...i already said it : there isn't much to read...it's not that long. The more you will play, the more you learn about the Runes. I haven't memorized all of them yet, but I know pretty much what to build for each class of champion.

It's something you will get over. Take it as the learning phase, which isn't always fun, but at least you'll know what to do. Don't give up on that aspect of the game, even if it's the only part you don't enjoy. Sure, making Runes isn't fun, but it's the best way to empower your champion and your abilities during the game. Take it as the strategic side of things.

[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

i cant move wtf1 votes

Sure, making Runes isn't fun, but it's the best way to empower your champion and your abilities during the game.

This is precisely the problem I have with them. They're not fun choices and they're not streamlined enough to be evaluated at a glance so I can "strategize" in champ select. I have no problems with the strategic side of League, I played RTS games competitively for years before I played this game and frankly there's more strategy and multi-tasking in those games. The runes just aren't designed with player usability in mind IMO. You can argue that "it's good runes are complex, that means the game is more strategic" but I disagree. Complexity for complexity's sake is a waste. Simplicity can be very complex on its own. If runes strove for simplicity with high amounts of emergent properties through different combinations then they could be a great element of the game but it's just not there yet. Their current iteration is a Sisyphean burden on the player.

KagureNai1 votes

Maybe the fact that you played games with a strategy side that was even more elaborated makes this Rune system feels somewhat underwhelming, maybe even not worthwhile.

That's how I see your struggle with the Runes.

The Runes system might show you not enough of their potential ( in your opinion ), but if you check your Rune thingy during a game, numbers will speak for themselves. The Rune system, as of now, can't show you what it will be like unless you go to practice tool and remember all the bonuses you get from it, or if you want to do the math.

When I make my Runes, I think "X will give me more burst, because it will synergize with X abilities" ; "X will give me bonus AD/AP to scale better in the game", and so on...but I don't think of it as "a huge bonus". The primary Rune ( the type you want, such as Electrocute/Predator/Dark Harvest/Hail Of Blades and so on ) are the most important one. All the tiny circles ones underneath are bonuses that will stack with eachother and come in really handy if it's chosen well.

What I mean by stack is, basically, it will enhance your champion bit by bit. It will be whatever bonus you wanted, combined with bonus damage to an movement impaired ennemy, and also permanent healing from your abilities for each takedowns.... ( I just described the Domination Tree there )

I can't say I fully understant you, but i'm trying to. Best of luck in your games!

i cant move wtf1 votes

I appreciate the effort but I'm not coming at this from an angle of incompetence. I have no problem understanding what the runes do, it's just that everything but the keystone is such minutia that it doesn't feel worth the read and memorization. IMO if they want to make lesser runes that deal with fractions of numbers then they should pain themselves to make them able to be fully described in one line. Then I don't have to read a novel to do a quick min/max analysis on what would give me that 0.5% advantage during champ select. Being able to understand something and being able to perform a cost/benefit analysis at a glance are 2 different things. "Underwhelming" isn't the right word, "unnecessarily complex for the little they do" is the best that comes to mind at the moment.

KagureNai1 votes

I think I get what you mean. It feels like investing too much time in a thing that doesn't seem worth in the end?

I can't relate to that, but maybe Riot should simplify Runes, as in, it's an option that you can enable anytime in your Rune page.

Gabresol1 votes

If you need to read the runes ever champ select, you might have a problem with your memorey. Because stuff like "you get movementspeed and bonus movementspeed converts into AD or AP adaptavly" is neither hard to undeerstand or diffecult to remember

Pachyderm1 votes

If you don't like having to think really hard about the runes, just use the default pages they gave you.

i cant move wtf1 votes

You're missing the point. I'm aware Riot provides recourse for people that don't want to be bothered. However I DO want to be bothered I just find most of the choices to be overly-complex, bland minutia.

I see, so it's A-Okay for you to attempt to insult my intelligence (you haven't) but when I flip the script it's a problem. We can add 'consistent' to your positive qualities as well.

For the second part I'm gonna drop a knowledge bomb on you.

More reading != better

More complexity != more fun

For the minutia that the lesser runes describe, they absolutely are too much freaking reading. I stand by that claim. If Riot is going to expect me to read what they write every champ select then they better make it worth my time or I'm not going to pretend it's a fun part of the game. I play this game for fun, I'm one of the casual players that plays a couple games a week and I'm not ashamed to admit I bring a "casual" perspective. I like the idea of runes and I think some of them are well designed but many are just half-baked, poorly conceived crap that I have to parse through and evaluate if I want to strategize an "optimal" path in pre-game. And before you say "just go to probuilds.com lol" that's not the point. I want runes to be something I enjoy doing in champ select instead of a rote task to be delegated to some korean that does it every patch because he's paid to. Crazy Idea, I know.

Both of these things are subjective. I find both of these things fun.

You can't just barge in here and act like you know the universal truth to everything, mister "I read manuals and APIs for a living".

For the minutia that the lesser runes describe, they absolutely are too much freaking reading.

Subjective.

If Riot is going to expect me to read what they write every champ select then they better make it worth my time

It is worth your time. If you don't choose the "right" ones, you're going to be at a disadvantage for the whole game.

How is that not enough reason to get off your "I read manuals and APIs for a living" butt and read a single paragraph?

I like the idea of runes and I think some of them are well designed but many are just half-baked, poorly conceived crap that I have to parse through and evaluate if I want to strategize an "optimal" path in pre-game.

And this is completely beyond your attention span because?

I'm sorry, but what you're proposing is basically just making the game play itself for you. Just read the damn runes.

I find it hilariously ironic that you can't read some runes with rather simple math, given your profession is literally about reading.

i cant move wtf1 votes

Of course this is subjective, it's a thread about an aspect of the game I don't like. Lol. No, the current runes are not beyond my attention span. They are simply a chore for me to do, as the title of this thread might suggest. For the little they do, they require a disproportionate amount of reading. They are what I would call, inefficient. Inefficiency is annoying to me. But I can hazard a guess that for pseudo-intellectuals (99% of the members of this board) they will defend any complexity no matter how Sisyphean it is in it's manifestation. So I'm not actually surprised this thread got a terrible reception. That saying about casting pearls before swine and all.

And everyone does chores.

Why should you be different?

For the little they do, they require a disproportionate amount of reading.

If 3 lines of text is considered "disproportionate", I find it hard to believe reading is your profession.

Also, you know you can press a small button at the bottom of the rune page that simplifies things, right?

They are what I would call, inefficient.

How are they inefficient?

The most efficient thing there is would be the one that goes into every detail possible in order to give you the most amount of information available.

You are the inefficient one here for being lazy.
