Malzahar Passive + Obliterator Laser

Mistress Shyvana··46 votes·3,199 views

So, i was in a game and Malz just tanked obliterator laser with his passive. I don't know if this is intended or not but can we get some clarity?

Seems a bit strange for the 1 hit laser to be stopped by malz passive.

This is due to Malzahar's passive being ridiculously OP.

Name checks out.

It shouldn't be, but it may be something they overlooked. He only reduces 90% of the damage, so theoretically it should still kill you...

The solution would be simple really, multiply the obliterator dmg by 10x or 100x or 1000x , so basically what ends up happening is that 10% of the obliterator dmg would still be 10 000 or something effectively negating the malzahar passive effect

Oooorr, Have the Obliterator Have a slightly longer Firing animation so it can have multiple ticks over the course of, say, 1.5 seconds.

That way it knocks off the Malz shield and then obliterates him

YuGiHo2 votes

so he can get hit by it and get out still?

Mistress Madoka1 votes

I was more thinking so the 1st tick would wipe out his sheild and the second tick finishes him off, but I can see how that could be an issue unless you made the damage ticks go off really fast.

Like, 4 times in half a second.

Or, you know, make it unstoppable damage like fountain turret...

Mistress Madoka1 votes

Obliterator Ignores Zhonya's and kills you

Last time I tried it (tho It was a while ago) Fountain Laser does not cut through Zhonya

The Yetii Rider1 votes

That doesn't feel like Obliteration though.

They should just make it true damage so it isn't reduced by anything.

Spoofghoul1 votes

u mean pure damage like fountain

Do spellshields block it?

How much damage did it do? If it didn't do any damage but popped the passive I imagine that instead of being coded as dealing 100000000000 damage it applies some sort of debuff that causes death, which Malz passive would stop.

Last time it hit me it dealt 14200 true damage.

VasilisGreen1 votes

the fact that it is true damage means that it should go through malz passive.

CriticalTroll3 votes

I think its intended to be that way and it's fine imo. Fiora can riposte the Obliterator Laser too.

VasilisGreen1 votes

WHAT?

Ralanr2 votes

That's some skilled fencing.

VasilisGreen1 votes

shouldn't it be coded like turret hits and bypass any kind of defense?

Serlthree1 votes

Riot personally said that they wanted counterplay to the laser (Fizz e, trynd ult, zhoyna, kayle ult, etc.)

VasilisGreen1 votes

well, whatever, why does malz ult block it then? it's not supposed to block true damage

I'm pretty sure he is referring to the obliterator laser in the new Nexus Siege mode.

granny strangler2 votes

Wow thats embarrassing, I haven't played the gamemode yet so I wouldnt know, sorry @op lol

It has been said on the PBE thread for this game mode that invulnerabilities can save you from it if you time it right.

It's not an invuln though, just 90% damage reduction.

Jeddy0171 votes

Then he simply reduce the damage from the Obliterator by 90%.

it's true damage, it shouldn't be affected by any forms of damage reduction that don't explicitly state they affect true damage (scuttle crab and towers have the only instances of damage reduction that affect true damage)

Jeddy0171 votes

Well then there's something wrong with the Obliterator, Malz's passive or both.

I'll agree when I see proof of this happening, we haven't seen any yet.

Jeddy0171 votes

Well, you could easily go in a custom game of Nexus Siege with Malz to test it out.

i understand, but there is no timing for malz passive its just there.

Narasimha1 votes

It depends on how much damage the beam does. I doubt the beam is actually coded as an execute, it's probably just a ridiclously high amount of true damage. Probably 9999. If Malz only takes 10% of that, he's really only taking 1000 damage. It hurts, but it's survivable.

kDrakari5 votes

If it's true damage then his passive shouldn't be able to reduce it.

MavenSong1 votes

Its flat DR... I think flat DR bypasses... could be wrong.

NineTailedMystic6 votes

True Damage ignores Flat DR. It's why Vayne can shred Ali through his ult or Ahri Q can chunk through it.

MavenSong2 votes

Ali ult specifically states for Physical and Magic damage.

VasilisGreen4 votes

Ali's ult is a all round 70% damage reduction. It might specify it because the only types of damage that can be dealt by champions are physical, magic and true and it's a given that true damage isn't mitigated by any means.

kDrakari2 votes

True damage ignores armor and magic resistance, as well as other forms of damage reduction such as Unbreakable, Unbreakable Will and Vengeful Maelstrom.

According to the wiki at least.

Sahn Uzal1 votes

What kind of damage does the obliterator Laser deal? If its Magical or Phsycial damage, Malzahars passive reduces the lasers damage by 90% because its all one big burst. If its true damage he shouldn't be able to tank that thing at all.

The 2nd Horseman1 votes

If the obliterator actually does a set amount of damage I believe. I think Redercy or another youtube mentions it in their nexus siege gameplay.

Project omen1 votes

They could code the obliterator to behave like the fountain lazer, so it can ignore passives, shields etc.

kile1471 votes

FYI Riot has said that the mechanic is called "Pure Damage" internally. They mentioned this when red smite was briefly coded as dealing pure damage, capable of going through stasis and Tryn ult among other things. That being said, the Obliterater being survivable by invulns is intended gameplay, though I imagine Malz passive is not.

Quepha1 votes

The obliterator deals true damage, it shouldn't be affected by his passive.
