Why do I get paired with players I report?

Sonasaurous··73 votes·4,827 views

So we lost a game. Our Lee Sin decided to sit at base for 7 minutes until we lost. Basically an afk, just not official. On top of that, he was a jerk about it. So I reported him.

Go to play the next game, and hey, guess who's there! The same Lee Sin! Playing Lee Sin again!

I'm support this game, so I show my intent to play Janna.

What does the Lee Sin do?

Bans Janna.

Of course.

So at the end of the game, I'll report him again. But all of this could have been avoided if the system just didn't pair me with the same person again in the first place.

Seriously, why pair together the people who report each other, but not the people who honor each other? Why does the system do this? Now I'm likely to lose another game with the same person who I already reported for not being very sportsmanlike because of the exact same problem.

Rito please.

If you couldn't get paired with anyone you reported it would increase queue times. At the very top end of ranked play it would be quite abusable because you could just report people better than you and end up getting paired only against weaker players.

Also not everyone who gets reported did something wrong. Not everyone who was reported and did something wrong is going to do it next game. I report people for "gg ez" and a couple other things that don't make me upset to see them next game necessarily but that I do feel shouldn't be happening in League.

I personally think at anything below diamond (on NA, other servers would probably need to be different) it should at the very least make it so you can't end up in a game with them for 6 hours. Maybe just for certain offenses. Hard to say.

I guess that's a fair enough reason.

Well said, I like that 6 hour standoff idea, atleast 1 hour, but something would help.

I just go out of que for 30 seconds to avoid getting qued up with trolls back to back, I dont even want to play opposite of them knowing what the enemy team is having to deal with.

Glad to see another "gg ez" reporter, I tell people its against the summoners code but they just laugh at me, soon enough it will come around to bite them. Its true people dont report for proper reasons enough, most of them are rageing little kiddies, but the system weights their reports really low Im sure as they probably report 3 people on their team every other game. People get away with being extremely toxic in pregame lobby then people forget to report them afterwards.

Anyway OP, just wait for 30-60 seconds, yes it will feel like a waste of time, but think of the 20 minutes of frustration you will feel if you get qued up with them again durring that 30-60 seconds and you will know its worth it to wait.

So make it sothat you can get people you reported on the other team, just not on yours, or not on yours for the next 10min. This would only increase queue times for players that are consistently toxic.

Cosnirak1 votes

The 10 minute limit I could get behind. But a permanent restriction on them even just being on your team would increase queue times for ALL (though by much less yes) but would be highly abusable.

ahferroin71 votes

Except doing this intelligently would mean that you can't be on the same team as them for some timeout. If I report some one and re-queue, I don't care if they're on the enemy team (especially cause this quite often means that the enemy team is at a disadvantage), but I sure as hell don't want them on my team again in the immediate future.

Things I've already said in this thread (including one in the post you responded to):

"I personally think at anything below diamond (on NA, other servers would probably need to be different) it should at the very least make it so you can't end up in a game with them for 6 hours. Maybe just for certain offenses. Hard to say."

Because riot loves people's suffering..

Trolls like that are why I usually wait a couple of minutes after a terrible game before queing up. I do agree tho riot needs to do something, a simple solution in terms of "this player reported that player, for the next match those two won't be paired together" would be great. it wouldn't increase que times because this game already has a metric shit ton of people playing it. it would go a long way into reducing toxicity and intentional feeding because quite frankly, if I had a player who intentionally fed last game on my team, I'd probably take my chances with leaver buster than to sit through another game suffering.

ahferroin71 votes

Wait, are you saying that Riot is run by Mordekaiser?

Spoofghoul4 votes

Because you can't report them if you never get paired with them

Look on the brightside everytime they in your game you get to report them again

I reported this guy named.... no shaming and naming allowed i guess well let call him xXxdouchebagxXx he fed ruined a game and flamed etc etc just another douvhebag but Rito matchfaking decided to put him in my games quite often so i reported him everytime i think ive reported him like 7 times and then all of a sudden never saw him again

Melledoneus4 votes

You get paired up with people you report so you can report them again. Riot is actually a company of geniuses.

Rux1003 votes

Lots of good points have already been made, but i didn't see this one:

Maybe after you report someone, if you get paired with them again on your team for the next 30 minutes or so, if you dodge the game, you wont get a penalty? That way que times wont increase, but you have lee-way w/ mister "gg ez" over there. BTW I'm also a proud reporter of the "gg ez", keep it up brothers and sisters.

Habitz3 votes

If you instantly requeue and they do as well then you are more likely to be matched with them. Take a five minute break if they were bad enough to want to avoid completely.

ElJanitorFrank2 votes

That would increase queue times outrageously. I've reported like 50 people in my entire league career, and I don't report players very often. Think of someone who has 200 or 300 people reported.

If ONE of those 200 or 300 people gets queued into 8 other people, leaving one spot open in the match making process, it will get filled by the next person to queue up, not you. Which means you have to wait twice as long, for the next 9 players who you haven't reported queue up.

It doesn't sound that bad, but think of the huge web of player-reportingship that is in existence. It'd be hard to get a game.

ESPECIALLY in higher ranks, when the queue times are much higher. Think of all the challenger players that have to wait 20+ minutes for a game. If they have 1 person reported, they might have to wait ANOTHER 20 minutes.

Honestly, the best thing to do is wait just 1 extra minute. That's all it takes; just browse the shop and check your champion mastery and that person has probably already queued into a different lobby.

And chances are, since he isn't currently banned from being reported, he was just in a bad mood at the time. Next week he'll probably be an unnoteworthy teammate not saying anything, or maybe even NICE. But you won't play with him because you don't like it when he's angry.

Cabalist2 votes

Well, if reporting will work the way you want it to, it could be spammed to get players that you can obliterate. When you report, make sure the majority of the other game players agree with you and almost always, the Lee might be suspended and/or has to wait a few 10-20 mins before attempting another game

Oksanaandjoy2 votes

Agreed. Same thing happened to me last night. Not only that, it was almost the exact team playing together - only 1 new player. How does that happen? In the first game, the player was aggressive with put downs and then started feeding by just running the champ down lane into turrets.

The second game was a little better, but the player was still reported for verbal abuse in the champ select as they mouthed off and referred to players in a derogatory manner.

As mentioned in the comments, the simple solution is just to take a break for 5 minutes. I like this idea as it's probably best after a rough experience anyway. We are independent ,free-thinking beasts; the world doesn't need to be automated around us.

Some are posting that the solution in the original post would be open to abuse. Maybe, but it wouldn't need to be an absolute. A timer, or one game skip, might suffice to get the players out sync and not in the same queues. I have hope that toxic players aren't that way all the time (otherwise they must live miserable lives!).

My final thought on this is that I just wish players had greater respect for their team mates time. A couple of games of league can get you close to 2 hours of play, if not more. We are all busy folk, with work and study and family commitments. There is nothing worse than having an individual disrespect that through AFK, feeding or abuse. I make no claims to be expert player (i'm sitting on a horrible 10 game losing streak right now :/) and we all have rough games or want to try new champs. In short we are all learning. A genuine commitment to getting better is evident in a player, as is a genuine commitment to making other players unhappy.

I got a similar but different story. I was in a game with a friend and his new in-game friend. His friend fed insanely top lane (insanely meaning he went 1-17...). We've all had bad games, but he died 40 seconds in to a SOLO kill to the enemy top laner. I had a great game of 17-4-4 and still couldn't carry because the top and bottom lanes were so insanely fed on their team.

Anyways long story short I end up blocking (on friend list) the top laner from my team so he can never ask me to play again in case I forget who he was. As the previous game he was jungle and kept getting executed by the camps all the way up to level 6... I gave him a second chance because he was a friend of a friend.

So after I block him I make a new game. Guess who is top of the list of suggested players? The person I just blocked...

Good suggestion...

this is why blocked players list should do something other than mute, they might not be reportable but i deffinetlly dont wanna play with toxicity agian

Even though this is the idea that Riot's given on the matter forever, they've shown that they have the tech to treat different tiers differently. Right now Gold and below don't suffer from elo decay, but each tier above that has their own rules for decay. Riot could make it so that people in certain lower tiers won't get matched with people they report. It wouldn't make everyone happy, but it would still satisfy a large portion of their playerbase.

The only thing with this is that since it would need to take all 10 players bans into consideration for matchmaking, I think this would be at highest feasible in Silver. Maybe they could increase it to Gold if they had some kind of expiration date on how far back the game checks your report history, as in it only checks the players your reported in the last 6 months or something like that.

Why is Rito not funding this?

Ternt2 votes

This happened to me before, so when I am playing and get a teammate or team like this, I say to myself "Imma let the queue air out a bit." Hopefully that group will get into champ selects before they end up in my queue again. Also, the problem with the whole honor vs report system is that it would easily be abused. I play against a horrible kid, honor so I can play him again. I play against a good kid, report so I don't play them again. It's a double edged sword where you could get that horrible person to vs again, but you could also get them on your team. So you honor them to play vs a bad person hopefully, get them on your team next game, then report them so you don't play with them again. It would make the report/honor system useless for anything. It makes sense on paper, but anything outside of putting toxic players into a queue of their own could be exploited to a certain degree.

Make it so it only applies for 1-2 hours and only applies if the person would be on your team.

Literally took me 2 minutes to have this incredibly shitty idea that completely prevents people from actively affecting the queue. LoL isnt some shitty indie game that has less than 60 people playing at times.

"Oh but it might increase his queue time by 10 seconds if the person reports everyone per game xD" boo hoo hoo.

Princess Emma1 votes

Always, always, ALWAYS wait before queuing again. 5-10 minutes or queue, decline the future pop up, and queue again then accept, unless the times are absurdly long.

Not just to reduce the risk of getting paired with the same person again, but for you to have more patience next game as well.

Gear Kitty1 votes

I do this after being paired with (or fighting against, sometimes) obviously bad or trolly ARAM players. Even just waiting 40 seconds is enough, which is something I tend to do anyway because I give congrats and good jobs where due in post-game.

Sonasaurous1 votes

On the plus side, we won the second game. Mostly because our Garen carried hard. But Lee Sin was still petty and foolish in his gameplay. This time around, he didn't say anything, as if that would stop me from reporting him again.

so i would get to play with no one

The Letter H1 votes

You see, this is why you wait 5-10 minutes after a game so you don't get paired with the same people.

RoyaiChaos1 votes

It's because people would abuse it and report anyone that they deem "bad" if they don't get qued with them. Then they'll only be qued with "good" players.

Sonasaurous1 votes

But does Riot check the validity of reports to make sure they aren't being abused?

waspcreaturesx1 votes

sees 10/0/2 player (or any player doing decently good) blocks/reports him so that I don't have to play against him again

Players would take so much advantage of that.

Xenomancers2 votes

He'll also never be on your team in that case - increasing your chances of having a shitter in his place. This is such a stupid argument that it barely warrants a response.

waspcreaturesx1 votes

Then why even respond Hun, if you don't get it?

The point is that you could literally just report anyone you don't want to play with or against for whatever reason. They don't punish you for spamming reports (although your reports may hold less weight in the future, they would still have to be of equal value in a system like this), therefore you could literally just spam report anyone for having a bad game.

The amount of people that would be needlessly reported and the spam that that would cause is enough to completely shut the idea of a system down.

If you block someone, maybe. I say MAYBE because you could again spam block several players just for the sake of it, but at least it wouldn't clutter reports as much as it would have. Still though, it would be an easily abused system.

If I don't warrant a response, please, do me a favor and don't waste my time.

Xenomancers1 votes

Okay - have a response.

Lets break it down here. Roughly 10 million active NA players in LOL - lets just say that only 1 million of them are in your player pool. Then lets say you play 4000 games in a season (a ridicules amount of games) if you reported every single player you encountered - you would have only reported 36,000 people out of 1 million - that is under 4% of the total player pool. And that's reporting everyone! If you only report the bad/good players it's an even smaller number that only effects less than 4% of the population! And this comparison covers your typical plat/diamond player (it's a 5x larger pool for bronze silver gold). Furthermore, safeguards could be put in place. Like a report limit, or even the need for 2 reports on a player to validate the report (this would really only be necessary for masters/challenger players anyways). There is a host of things that could be done to make this work BUT people like you always harp on about how it can be abused even though it's statistically impossible to do so.

waspcreaturesx1 votes

Literally making a "need for 2 people to report a player" for validation is almost an unnecessary step as you can literally, easily get almost anyone to report anyone for anything because a lot of the player base feels that reports do very little. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to convince ONE other player to report someone.

My point was that regardless, it would be more trouble than it is worth to actually implement a system like this and clearly define the boundaries. Alternatively, you could EASILY wait a good five minutes before queuing again. The chances that the same toxic player hasn't already found a match is very little, and it will definitely give you a tilt break.

And the tilt break is definitely necessary since literally 75% of the player base takes his GAME way tooooo seriously.

Youre saying they dont do that now? I get ganked silly by a Rengar with a troll assassin support who refuses to buy sight stone and people are begging for me to be reported for "feeding" all the time.

Its why they took the "unskilled" report option out because 5 people all reported the other 4 every game in bronze 5. It was exploding the report servers.

Then we'd just look at the leaderboards and ban every summoner except the top 10 in every elo. Now I'd only get teamed with people that can carry me consistently.

Xenomancers1 votes

You'd have to actually play a game with them to report them.....

Fizz Wukong1 votes

But not to block them. Why would they match with someone on your block list if they wouldn't match with someone on your reported list.

PapaGreg211 votes

Riot will not change it because people would abuse the system and just start reporting players they thought were bad to prevent getting them on their team again.

Xenomancers2 votes

What is wrong with this? It doesn't change their MMR - they still get matched at the same level. Literally gives you no advantage, unless of course, the player they are reporting is actually really bad - which is likely. However, in this case, that would be a unintended benefit to the system. There's also another way to prevent abuse. Give a player a limited number of reports per day, like maybe 5. That way they would have to limit their reporting to only serious cases, rather than frivolous reports.

Immane1 votes

I'm with you 100%. A week ago I got hard trolled by a duo... like real trolling, massive intentional feeding, laughing about it in team and all chat the whole game. I reported them both, naturally.

The next game I got queued with them again. For some reason they decided to take this game seriously but were still laughing about the last game saying how much "fun" it was. I couldn't resist but troll them back. On one hand, vindication... on the other, this is what the system breeds and it's unfortunate.
