Testing the Garen

I've read a few posts about how Garen is broken and one person claimed that they downed 13K Damage into a dummy with QER with "drakes" and "full build". So thats my hypothesis and I am going to put that to a test.

I will assume that "drakes" just means 3 infernals and will iterate through different builds to show the damage I tested and some keynotes.

The runes will not be iterated. So to reference them now. I hope this doesn't account for advertising, but the runes were taken from "Mobalytics Standard Garen" (reference https://app.mobalytics.gg/champions/garen/build 10:52 CEST 10/15, they change so heres the date) Primary Resolve

  • Grasp of the Undying
  • Demolish
  • Second Wind
  • Unflinching

And then secondary Precision

  • Triumph

  • Legend: Tenacity

  • Adaptive Force

  • Adaptive Force

  • Armor

All damage is tested on the ingame test dummys -** aka 50% Armor 50% MR.** All Tests will use NO AAs and include an ignite. All Tests will be performed 3 times and then an estimated average will be taken. (I'm too lazy to do even the simplest math. Sorry. lol) The Ult will always be used after Ignite wears off. Ignite will always be used first. All active Items will be utilized. If possible all passive item effects will be utilized. (Dead Man's for example)

First Build: No Items Fun Fact, a level 18 Garen is perfectly capable of slaying an Infernal Drake with no items A Garen with no items is able to deal ~2225 Damage to a dummy with Q E R + Ignite on no items.

First Build Black Cleaver, Sterak's, Spirit Visage, Dead Man's Plate, Warmog's Armor, Mercury's Treads Damage: ~3000 (But he's hella fucking tanky oh boii)

Second Build Youmuu's Ghostblade, Death's Dance, Sterak's Gage, Mercury's Treads, Trinity Force, Infinity Edge Damage: ~5600

6x Infintiy Edge: Damage: 7693 (always)

Infinity Edge, Rapid Firecannon, Berserkers, Statikks, Bloodthirster, Phantom Dancer KEYNOTE: I used AAs until ignite wore off and then finished off with an Ult. Damage - No AAs: ~7000 WITH AAs: ~8000

Same Build - Q and Only AAs until Ignite wears off - Finishing off with an Ult Damage: ~6500

I love how Garen still kicks a good 2.1k HP no matter what and his passive regs 10.1% of that every 5 seconds.

Sadly I didn't collect the same info with a sort of "undisputed" juggernaut in the current meta and I have no experience as to how much damage they should deal, but I'm inviting you to discuss this.

Is it too much, is it too little, is it just right?

A juggernaut of this simplicity is able to whip out a few damaging items around his rather tanky base stats and drop a whopping 5600 Damage on you. Considering the Ult is True damage and cant be blocked and his W grants 60% Tenacity, straight up 30% Damage Reduction AND a proper shield, his Q speeds him up AND cleanses him from all slowing effects.

What I'm trying to say, my personal opinion is that the major problem with Garen is his ability to avoid soft CC like slows with ease and use his W and Boots to scale down hard CC so it becomes meaningless. Whipping out Mercury's and properly using W will grant you 95% around 72% Tenacity in total. Excuse me? Might as well give him a blackshield. His W combined with Mercury's is a weaker Morgana blackshield (with a shorter shield duration) in disguise.

I'm fine with his damage if there was a solid way to avoid it through utilizing your own abilities or to, at least, scale it down a bit.

About the last part with garen being able to shrug off CC easily. While those two points can appear broken, you have to remember the conditions that they apply too. Garen’s Q only removes slows that were applied before he used q. Example: if Nasus uses wither on garen after he uses Q, Garen will still be slowed. His Q is also on a roughly 6 second CD. While yes he can drastically reduce the effectiveness of soft and hard CC with his W, the tenacity boost is only for the initial 0.75 sec of the W duration. Tenacity also does not reduce knockbacks knockups, or suppressions.

Garen’s greatest weakness, and the easiest to exploit, is his lack of CC and susceptibility to be kited easily. Coming from a garen main (take that with a grain of salt) I personally think that he should get more options to stick to a target. Either the MS boost on his q should be increased, or the CD of it should be lowered at later lvls. The last option would be to increase the duration of the tenacity boost from W to 1 second from 0.75 sec. The trade off for these buffs is to slightly shave the damage from his E (which is really powerful with conq) or lowering the damage of his Q.

Basically what I am saying is give garen more sticking power, but lower his damage in return so he doesn’t become unstoppable when he reaches a target

Riot is balancing Garen around Conqueror now; assume that Conqueror is the keystone.

Also, Tenacity stacks multiplicatively. It's still a lot of Tenacity, but it's not %95 just from boots. (It's %72, for .75s.)

laugh But then you gave him Unflinching AND Legend. (Yeah, Garen wasn't going Legend before, but he is now, because Conqueror.) (On the other hand, ANY CHAMPION will have %67 Tenacity with those runes and boots. Quaff Iron and it's %75. That's NOT a Garen trick.)

Why you didn't just give him DD for BT in the last build? (I guess if he's using BT like that, then he may as well take Shield Bash...)

What stands out (to me) from your post is that Garen doesn't scale with items much. (Not as much as would be expected. He doesn't snowball much.) (But he's not supposed to.)

This was all done on a lvl 18 Garen. Early game differences are even much finer. The difference on a full Garen Combo using just BC or just DMP is ~%10.
