You're looking for Morgana.
She deals tons of damage, even if she never bothers building deathcap (seriously fuck the gold cost on that.) check my match history with her at http://na.op.gg/summoner/matches/userName=mudinthewater expand the games to see damage dealt; I consistently deal some of the highest damage in the game.
She is difficult to gank.
She is oppressive when ahead, and has a two item powerspike and a three item powerspike.
She just got buffed.
Her counters aren't very popular right now. (can't even remember the last time I played against a zed, talon isn't really all that annoying, most Vladimirs aren't going to be a problem thanks to cheap as heck 'nomicons)
Champions she counters are VERY popular right now and don't realize she pubstomps them because she is so unpopular. (Re: Yasuo)
Her ganks are great thanks to her multi-target ult.
A single Q landed on a squishy has cost enemy teams an ace, three turrets, and an inhib in games I have played with her.
When she is behind she still has high utility with her ult shield and Q.
She has multiple team comps she can support. She can be played as a poke mage who does more damage with QW than Nid spears ever did, or she can be played as a hard engage Ult-hourglass pain.
She is very versatile so when you have trolls who don't respect the pick order you can do any role other than ADC, and against a few ADCs you can even ADC. She is even situationally viable in the jungle thanks to level 2 Q ganks and Runeglaive.
She is fairly easy to pick up and play with.

I learned her by playing support then moving to mid lane. Support is a good place to start with her because you don't have to manage farming and can focus on making plays with her because your support plays will carry over to mid. As a mid morgana, in teamfights you have to be mid morgana AND support morgana so starting as support is a good idea. (mostly to learn when to Q, who to Q when to shield, who to shield, etc)
You will want quick cast to be on for all her abilities, just fyi
The playstyle for mid Morgana is pretty different as well since 9/10 times you max W first. Mid Morgana basically shoves the enemy under tower and if they try to engage on her she just goes "nope" and walks away. Also by shoving she can roam more freely, and even her rank 1 binding is 2 seconds long so while it won't be support Morgana strong it can still screw enemies over. Mid Morgana since she'll have much more AP can't be ignored if she ults 2 or more people, and once she has zhonya's the enemy has to make a decision really quickly. Her blackshield with AP is also monstrous as it can stop either hard CC or AP assassins in their tracks, but remember it only blocks MAGIC damage, so unless you'll be blocking some form of CC don't put it on someone if they're fighting an AD champ. Morgana however relies on her Q to set up all of her damage, and is more of a counter-engage champ. Unless she has flash the enemy won't let you walk into them and ult unless you've hit a binding and you're going with your team, but if the enemy dives into your team suddenly you have a free ult on 3+ people, your binding to stop a high priority target, and your shield to protect a carry from lock down while you have zhonya's. Morgana also isn't a super hard carry as she doesn't have the raw damage of other mid laners but she can turn a teamfight completely in your favor if you play it smart. She is very safe though and only costs 1350 IP so she's a great starting point.

Depends. In general mid you will put three marks in W then max Q, while as support you're going to max Q first.
Support: QEWQQR (situational after 6 depending on enemy comp) Mid: WQWEWRQ (max Q after 6 most matchups)
After level 9 or so they start to look pretty similar unless the support Morg maxes E second, which is certainly viable.
As for raw damage, I would say she is right up there with the best of them right now if you play her as a poke mage with Liandry's+Rylais. When I have blue buff and that combo I can pretty well solo siege against 3+ people when I'm ahead becuase A QW is death and I have tons of sustain and can poke and farm at the same time. Again, I consistently deal the highest or close to the highest damage in the game with her if you check my history.
Yes mid playstyle is different from support, but her mid strategies are all in addition to her support strategies as she will make the same support-like plays in mid, (shielding adcs, peeling for them if necessary) but in addition more carry type plays like going in solo on an enemy team at baron, getting a quadrakill, and stealing baron which I have done before as mid but would not even try as support due to lack of damage.
Talon and TF are my two main mids. They both scale reasonably well into late, and if you get behind you can always roam to get back in the game. TF is a little trickier to pick up, sometimes you mess up the card selection when put under pressure.
Also for a really strong, simple mid laner that can carry and be relevant when behind? Annie. Simple as balls and cheap to buy, her stun means she'll always be relevant, high base damage, easy to farm minions with her Q, one of the biggest "fuck you" ultimates in the game, and has huge burst and decent sustained damage with Tibbers and decently low cooldowns.
Ziggs. As long as you have Morellonomicon and Luden you should do fine from behind. Just have to assume you wont get a lot of blue so manage your mana well. Hell, they even nerfed Ziggs because he can stall so well.
hmm i migght just buy rune pages and try out zigs and morg
Twisted Fate can carry well by helping other lanes; ganking other lanes with your ult generally keeps you from falling behind. Even if you do fall a bit behind, your stun and AOE slow are helpful in teamfights.
If you're finding that you fall behind very often when playing mid lane, use a utility mid laner like
Orianna or
Morgana so you can have some usefulness in teamfights even when you're behind.
annie the strongest on the list. One man wombo combo
Heimerdinger is also a very good mid laner because of his kit. Your turrets do half of the work for you, he's very difficult to gank, and most people don't know how to fight him. His turrets ALWAYS prioritize enemy champions over minions so you're guaranteed they'll help you out when fighting someone. Heimer also has very high AP damage and his turrets can do a lot of damage as well so Heim is very good lane bully. Another + is Heim isn't too difficult to use.
