So... Cassiopeia.

So is it just me or did the rework to fix her "unhealthy laning phase" make her more obnoxious than ever? She STILL zones you to hell and back and now she has insane sustain to do it with. Can we please PLEASE revert the shitty rework now? She was changed into a machine gun instead of a poison mage, gutted, then slowly buffed up to the point that now she's probably going to get nerfed. Is this how a successful rework is SUPPOSED to be? If so, please stop reworking champions riot. Please. I'm asking nice.

She's played mid AND top... and yes that's my point. She's far more unhealthy and obnoxious as the new top lane Ryze than she ever was as her old niche-pick midlane. I'm just sick of seeing them rip apart champs I like and then turn them into something toxic, poorly designed and awful.

Now that Cass is 120% based around her E, she is either going to be so ungodly strong with it that you can't go near her... or too weak to matter in it, in which case she has nothing to fall back on. Who decided it was a smart idea to give her a huge pile of power in a spammy, targeted ability that also heals her? She can ONLY ever be broken or useless now.

Before the rework she still maxed E and spammed it, but she could also nuke you with her Q on top of that and that was the extent of her gameplay. They gave her more options in terms of builds and may have gone a bit ham on numbers, but its mostly the same as it was before.

She has always nuked people and dealt way too much AoE damage, and she hasn't really changed from that just what she does it with changed.

They gimped her Q a lot and put it in her E. She's not a DoT mage anymore. She's a machine gun. Cause when I think "poison" I think of a machine gun.

I think this is why Cass fans will never really be satisfied with Cass. The players see her as the "poison mage" when Riot just used this archetype to have a "sustained mage." She may be less of a poison mage but she is way more of a "mage version of an ADC." Which is waht Riot always saw her as, whether her fans saw that way or not.

And lets be honest here. They have never reverted a rework before, all the complaining in the world isnt going to make them start.

5G8Nri0B543 votes

WELL...they are in the process of reverting Ahri's rework. She's not 100% like she'll be pre-rework but they're clearly expressing their intention to revert her to the state she was before they reworked her.

I think this is why Cass fans will never really be satisfied with Cass. The players see her as the "poison mage" when Riot just used this archetype to have a "sustained mage."

The funny thing is, the two aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, the ONLY way a Poison Mage can work out is if it is a Sustained Damage Mage as burst or any form of instant damage at all will contradict the fantasy.

But the issue here is that it's entirely possible to have a Sustained Damage Mage and NOT be a Poison mage...and that's what Riot went with.

pWasHere1 votes

That is my point, all of this disagreement is ultimately a fundamental disagreement over the champion's identity.

I think people can argue over direction all they want, but Riot has taken a path that they believe represents what they thought as Cass. They wanted a mage ADC, and you guys didnt.

What? They nerfed her numbers on Q W and R.

All her AoE got nerfed basically.

Cass is much weaker in lane now than she used to be.

Approximately, yes. The most important task of a rework is to focus the kit on a particular playstyle. After they hit the playstyle they want, they tune it up until it's the right strength. Sometimes they overshoot and it needs nerfs.

Many Old Cass players are unhappy about Riot's choice of playstyle, but with as disjointed a kit as Old Cass had there was nothing they could do about that. If they focused on her poison elements, the players who liked spamming E would be complaining approximately as loudly as the poison mage fans are today.

Point taken. I guess the E spammers would have been mad. But is the new playstyle really a healthy one? She's entirely based around a short-ranged targeted spell that does huge damage and has powerful innate sustain. She can't really be outplayed beyond dodging her ult. If you go near her, she will spam E and you can only really hope that you can either CC her and blow her up, or hit her harder and faster. She wins or loses entirely on numbers now, not skill... and that doesn't seem like healthy design to me. Kayle got nerfed several times over it. Ryze got nerfed over it... and now Cass will get nerfed over it.

And do you know what else that sort of playstyle tends towards? No one picking the champs in question if they AREN'T overpowering. I hardly ever see Kayle or Ryze anymore. Soon Cass will be the same way.

sound like a marksman, isn't it?

Fluppets3 votes

that was the point, a mage with a sustained single-target play pattern as opposed to either AoE/CC or burst.

LordOfTheLeague3 votes

Her E is literally an auto attack that cost mana and need psn to keep up in dps.

DemiluniS2 votes

Guess that's the cost of having a marksman who does purely magic damage

5G8Nri0B544 votes

Less satisfying when you consider it doesn't also come with the same mechanics as auto-attacking, such as attack cancelling, etc.

SmokingPuffin5 votes

She can't really be outplayed beyond dodging her ult.

Dodging her Q is usually more important than dodging her R. She's similar to a marksman, but she has to land a skillshot before damage can start. That probably makes her strictly healthier than the marksmen class -- you can use all the counterplay patterns for marksmen plus this new one.

She wins or loses entirely on numbers now, not skill... and that doesn't seem like healthy design to me.

I don't agree. New Cassiopeia relies more on good positioning and timing than even Ashe. I expect that Cass winrate curve will show her to be a very high skill cap champion, one of the hardest to play correctly in the game.

And do you know what else that sort of playstyle tends towards? No one picking the champs in question if they AREN'T overpowering. I hardly ever see Kayle or Ryze anymore. Soon Cass will be the same way.

In general, very few champions stay popular when they're not OP. The community chases power levels much more than they prefer to play their favorite kits or most enjoyable characters. I doubt Cass will buck that trend.

I don't really expect balanced Cass to be very popular. You have the wrong common thread though. It's not that sustained magic damage champions are unpopular; it's that immobile champions are unpopular.

EfficientDynamo3 votes

I completely agree with this. Yeah Cass does a HUGE amount of damage, but if you miss your poison during an engage/teamfight you are usually screwed. She is definitely not easy to play.

So let me get this correct. A champion who has the potential to be played in multiple ways needs a rework then to pigeonhole them into a single play style? Cause that's what you're saying. That means Blitzcrank, who is a fighter/support, Morgana, who is mage/support, Elise, who is mage/assassin, should all be gutted to be reworked into a single role, because according to you, reworks are supposed to remove versatility and create a single play style.

You know what would have dispelled this animosity? If they had reworked her to retain both of her play styles, instead of stupidly rushing her rework to make it in time for the Shurima event, which stank of half-assery. This rework was half-assed like the rest of the Shurima event, as evidenced by the lore botches, Azir having more bugs than sand particles, and her half-assed visual/voice update that fixed nothing on her and kept really sloppy animations/models. Cassiopeia was botched hard-core. Her entire personality was and is contradicted by the way she plays now, and she's now nothing more than "don't die and wait to become OP." 75% of her kit is an irrelevant set up for E, and her R has an awkward casting time that makes it pointless considering how close you need to be to land it. Her kit blows now, and they sought to rectify it by cramming numbers and add-ons into E, overly complicating one of the simpler kit designs they had pre-rework.

You misunderstand. All the champions you mentioned have coherent, focused kits. It is fine to have kit versatility, even desirable. Also, clearly League supports role hybridization; two role champions are more common than one role champions. When I speak of focusing on a playstyle, it's about how the kit works together. A kit that is properly focused provides higher player satisfaction, because the player has a clear objective and achieving it feels obviously right.

With Old Cass, you have two playstyles that fight against each other -- the poison mage part of Cass is interested in long poke fights from range, while the snakebite part of Cass wants to get close and burst targets during R windows. If you try to support both of these playstyles, you either end up with an OP champion or neither feeling like the right way to play. Old Cass has this problem where the player is never really confident they were doing it right, and the goal state in engagements is not obvious.

In my view, Riot was correct to choose one and clearly emphasize that as the dominant play pattern. It would have worked fine to support poisoning as the dominant pattern too, of course. I think Riot preferred to focus on the E because they have a few good DoT mages, but nobody has a marksman-style magic damage pattern.

You know what would have dispelled this animosity? If they had reworked her to retain both of her play styles, instead of stupidly rushing her rework to make it in time for the Shurima event, which stank of half-assery.

Retaining the strong poison damage in Cassiopeia's kit would necessitate watering down her single target damage focus. Not a recommended course of action. Focused champions with clear strengths and weaknesses are what we want from kit designs.

5G8Nri0B544 votes

You know as someone who used to play quite a bit of Cass I gotta disagree with this.

Yes some Cass were more poke heavy and others were more mano-a-mano happy. However, both playstyles rely on the other style to a good extent to retain competitiveness.

This is on the grounds that, if it's there, you probably wanna use it unless you want to pretend you don't have an ability. For instance, if you go for Poke-Cass, you will use her E if enemies jump within range, and this will happen...a lot. For Poke Cass, the E is an emergency move, something to use inbetween your poisons if someone is on top of you.

Well...that's for Poke Cass anyways. All-in Rambo Cass are having the best orgasm in her life because her Poison and AoE is shit but her favourite ability is so over-loaded.

5G8Nri0B548 votes

Working as intended unfortunately.

The decision to jack her up with numbers until she is OP was an attempt to win people over so people will warm up to the rework. Now that people are sucked in they can proceed to nerf her again.

...or atleast that's what the most realistic scenario is, or else if this was their serious effort trying to balance her, that would be depression.

(it's no secret that I'm not only a little biased, but I hate the rework and Riot's handling of her)

PS - also they kinda abandoned the rework midway due to LCS. They quickly taped together a new patch to try to make her more salvageable after the tournament ended and now we have...this.

Neo Cyrus8 votes

She's getting a massive mana nerf next patch. Then they're going to say "Oops we underestimated how hard it would hit her" when she drops to 40%- win rate for months like is happening with Syndra now. Then they'll do nothing about it until a year+ later when she gets a semi-rework after everyone is finished cursing at the guys responsible for this catastrophe of a rework.

I'm not even one of those who minds AP Rambo Cass, I like it, but there is so much they've done wrong that even their target audience (people like me) are infuriated with it. Now nerfs on top of it. Good job Rito, you clownshoe goofs.

5G8Nri0B545 votes

The kicker here is...those who like Poison Mage Cass never minded AP Rambo Cass, and vice versa. Pre-rework both sides existed apathetically. And more importantly, while both sides have their own opinion on how best to play Cass, both sides relies a bit on the other's play style to eventually succeed because even if you hate a certain play style, if you have an ability, you use it.

It was very specifically the actions of those who did this rework that created this disdain the two sides have shown for each other's play style. RIOT created a very clear and bitter divide among the fanbase with this rework.

(that and 99% of power based upon a single un-dodgeable point and click ability yada yada yada)

I'm not even one of those who minds AP Rambo Cass

YES!

Use a term long enough and sooner or later it'll catch on...

Can't agree more. Don't get me wrong, Twin Fang is a very cool skill that is massively unique and fun to spam, but it is NOT good design to put 100% of a champ's damage in a TARGETED spammable nuke. The only counterplay to Twin Fang is to dodge Cass's other abilities, which funnily enough is the exact same counterplay for those abilities. Not really healthy stuff, and the fact that she's now pumping out all of that DPS while also mitigating hundreds upon hundreds of damage is just ridiculous. You either dodge her skill shots and she does nothing, or you don't dodge her skill shots and she does EVERYTHING. You either kill her before she gets to do anything or you find out it's impossible to outdamage her. That's not healthy gameplay in any aspect.

She's a ball of stats, people have said it all along. They never, ever work out.

5G8Nri0B543 votes

I've had success poking her down with Jayce and Nidalee.

I mean, yeah it's not such a great idea to go at her with a bruiser anymore, but who even plays melee top nowadays anyways. You're just asking to get shat on by Ryze or such.

Hawkefire6 votes

Sadly it seems Riot doesn't understand that ball o stats champs are toxic by design.

Isn't that the whole reason why they wanted to rework top lane? Because it was essentially the guy that had the slightly bigger ball of stats would win?

So....then they implement a champion that is pretty much 100% ball o stats....and expect it to be an IMPROVEMENT?

Sometimes I just don't get riot.

Oleandervine6 votes

The problem there is that Marksman-AP-Rambo mage is not something that should have been dumped onto Cassiopeia with her kit remaining the same. If there was going to be a streamlining, she needed a complete overhaul. If there was going to be such a strong focus on this style of play, then Riot should have put that concept aside for a different champion. Cassiopeia first and foremost according to EVERYTHING related to her lore, quotes, and kit content prior to the rework, is a mage focused on poisoning and slow painful deaths, not insta-deleting opponents with a spammable spell. Sure, she had a strange kit that had somewhat conflicting roles, but to keep her thematic, they should have focused on her poisons instead of her E, as a poison mage is a role that is currently not occupied by any champion. Her kit as it is is not suitable for "hammer-a-button-in-place-of-autoattacks" due to the majority of her kit being focused on poisons. The odd piece of her kit was her old passive and her E, and honestly, Twin Fangs should have been replaced with something else instead of elevated to the core of her kit. To properly make a marksman-style APC, Riot should make a kit that emphasizes such a style with all of the skills that lend viability to it. If they enjoy the necessity to create a set up for spam, then one skill should have the tool for that while the rest play off of acting as a caster marksman, rather than emphasizing conflicting roles and reducing the power of all but one skill. Cassiopeia having only 1 skill that replaces auto attack functionality doesn't really solidify her as a marksman APC. It only serves to make her feel awkward and clunky.

The Queen Viper5 votes

Nah... any ranged caster is like that when played in top lane. This is basically the same scenario when Kayle got "nerfed to the ground"... so as a ranged champ the only viable place to go is top and bully those melee champs since they cannot compete in mid lane. -.-

Um, great. I think... you're agreeing with me? You're eally hard to understand to be honest. My point was the rework put her in a place where she's either going to be completely useless due to how close she has to get to hurt you... or completely broken because coming into the death radius ends you. This is pretty much the problem. Cassiopeia was my first champ I bought, so I can see where you're coming from. Cassiopeia is a super mana hungry champion, but I don't think giving her EXTREMELY high mana sustain and spellvamp for free is the way to go about it. Her old Deadly Cadence passive was much better, in terms of being less obnoxious as hell, because it contained her mana problems without making her "might as well be an energy/resourceless champ" in lane phase at least. The E mana restore makes her mana management braindead early and strangely bad late unless you get a tear... It's very awkward.

That said though, the logic here riot is presenting is mind boggling. "We wanted to tone down Cassiopeia's oppressive lane bullying." Okay, so why did they buff her Twin Fang, which was the reason short range mages and melee mids were tearing their hair out before they could get enough items to fully burst her? Her Twin Fang was where most of her oppression is. It warps to being bad for Cassiopeia on the other end of the spectrum, too. Because her E had so much power her high poke damage was unreliable. (Q was a good poke spell, W had good zoning but it was unreliable as poke) Against high range mages Cassiopeia did struggle. Her Q poke was NOT enough to keep up, unfortunately. ( At least for me. I'm at like high silver now and I started playing at the end of season 3 so bear with me, please.) This translates to basically "I shit on your melee mid, or Annie, Ryze, etc. but I'm mediocre against poke/ long range burst mages. (Thank god Wyndra got gutted)

Now, with players being forced into the Twin Fang all in playstyle, the issue is all the more exacerbated. She still shits on melee's/short range mages, and now she can farm it up EASILY against these long range poke mages now because of her health and mana sustain. Rush a catalyst instead of a Tear if you're frightened on getting bursted and then you will be a self-sustaining menace as long as you need to scale up. Honestly, she's still a better lane bully than late game, imo. She's been buffed enough to have a steady 55% win rate.

http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=10780961#10780961

This is an old post with Brackhar, Cassi's original designer, discussing her Deadly Cadence passive. This passive was honestly pretty damn good considering how mana passives are boring from the get go. But, it enhanced her lane bullying without giving her INFINITE mana sustain, and the stacking mechanic added a sense of rhythm to your spell casts. It was pretty engaging for a mana conservation passive, instead of the one on Twin Fang she has now.

http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=4613331#4613331

Brackar had intended to create Cassi as a champ similar to Anivia, although mobile and sustained damage focused rather than slow and bursty. You can see from her old kit these elements. Cassiopeia's Miasma was quite similar to Anivia's Glacial Shroud as a good zoning/waveclearing tool. Also, look at both of these champion's E spells; Twin Fang and Frostbite. **Notice how on their own they deal mediocre damage but with their other abilities they can do a lot? And these other abilities are plenty powerful on their own?**There are other examples, but basically I feel like so many parts of the zoning-control mage/Anti-Anivia are... not the same with Cassiopeia anymore.

I'm going to say a reversion of the rework is in order. And perhaps to never rework her. Cassiopeia's two playstyles as a poison-poke mage/ or all in DPS mage with twin fang appeal to very different sides of her fanbase. If one side HAS to get snubbed, in this case it was the players that played her as a poison-poke mage, than maybe it's better to leave her with her slightly awkward, but EXTREMELY MORE enjoyable and engaging kit she had before, and this can be based on her old and new passives alone.

"Awright we got some sheeps to start playing her! She has a whopping 4% playrate now! Time to nerf her!"

Sweetie Brella4 votes

Honestly, I agree with you, she does need changing. But my main point of contention is how uninteractive and boring she is to play.

I mean really Riot, in 2015 we have a unique gameplay mechanic that's literally waiting? I like to think they're better than this, if only they'd act like it more often.

And yeah, once you get there you have the incredibly complex strategy of getting into range, poisoning and enemy then mashing the E key until you get carpal tunnel. You HAVE to build AP to get any meaningful benefit. Sure. melting enemies with a string of Es can be fun, at least until the novelty wears off. Which is pretty damn fast.

At the end of the day, she should be a bit less powerful, but some of the power should go into more meaningful and diverse gameplay. Goods from the greats and all that (but not straight up nerfs, or we're back to Shurima update, which honestly isn't any better). As the main source of damage, E should be more dependent on the other skills, not the other way around as it is now.

chriserit3 votes

yea i said it long time ago... they were scared of old cassio but created something even worst to deal with

new cassio if strong enough is impossible to deal with ... she can just w under you and then EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and you are dead without being able to do anything to stop her from doing it. old cassio was based on skillshot, new cassio not, if she it you with a poison you are dead, and with W you hit poison really easily. In addition she got so much slows that you can't run away from her in any way ... probably even hecarim could run away from her when chased.

so the only way to let her not being toxic for the game is to nerf her so much to make her unviable.

It really confuses me.

Some reworks I thought were absolutely amazing (Sion, Soraka, Tristana)

While others have been absolutely horrid (Sona, Cassiopiea)

The funny thing is it has been admitted in both the Sona and the Cass rework that the person in charge did not listen to community feedback.

Both have admitted this. Fearless was the bigger douche in my opinion, Stashu seems to be actually trying.

However, both of them love to just leave us with these shit reworks, Fearless will pop in to call someone dumb, get downvoted, Stashu will say he has plans for cass, etc etc.

Hopefully Stashu will keep trying and will finish this rework. I have a feeling Fearless is going to keep defending the awful Sona rework and she is just going to be forgotten. I honestly hope that Riot Ezreal will swoop in and rework Sona himself :P

5G8Nri0B543 votes

Where, they admitted to it with the Sona rework? Where and when?

As far as Sona's go, my biggest beef is that it's kinda half-assed. Take a look at her damaging hymn. Pre-rework is gives offensive stats, buffing both auto-attacks and abilities. After the rework, the idea is actually kinda cool...but have you noticed that it exclusively benefits auto-attackers? It doesn't proc off abilities the same way pre-rework Sona's aura will.

PS - and her R is now a stick of butter

5G8Nri0B541 votes

huh, that sucks.

If anything, being an aura-bot was her identity, and that was something she lost with the rework. Something subtle yet devastating, such as the advantage she offered her team.
