Can't believe this is banworthy

EDIT: Just realized I accidentally posted this to Gameplay. Meant to post it in GD. My bad.

EDIT 2: Not sure if someone censored my link or if I accidentally changed it when making the first edit. If it was a moderator, please inform me.

To preface: to be completely fair here, the forum ban on one of my other accounts, that I'm about to talk about could have been a 1 day ban. I recently posted something that I really shouldn't have (and know I shouldn't have, but did anyway) and got a 1 day ban for it. It was deserved. This one may have been shorter if not for that other, stupid, post.

Also, I'm not a toxic person. I have never been chat restricted in game after 8 years of playing. Never been banned in game. Though to be completely forthcoming, I have had 4 posts removed for being a bit of an asshole in the last year. It happens. I'm not proud of it..but we all have those days.

Now to the topic at hand.

I just received a forum ban on one of my other accounts for calling a game mechanic (and I'm directly quoting here so please don't ban me) "r%%%%%ed."

Literally.

I could almost (almost) understand if the term was directed at a person, but it wasn't. It was directed at a game mechanic AND IT IS A CENSORED WORD ON THE BOARDS.

I am incredulous...absolutely floored by this. This shit has gone too far.

And, fine. I won't use the word any more on the boards, but this is ridiculous and I wanted to post about it to not only complain, but also hear the opinions of others on the matter.

God damn. The snowflakes and SJWs are taking over Riot, too, now?

I don't fully understand it because we don't really have this phenomenon of "word banning" where I live, but according to my American friends, the word is considered dismissive of people with certain mental disabilities. Technically speaking, the meaning is "to slow"; for example, there are ret*rders on many delivery trucks for hilly areas, which slow the drive train digitally to prevent wear on brakes. But apparently, it's also become used to refer to people with mental disabilities or something? I don't know, but that's probably why.

Edit: Wow, I actually had to self-censor that so it wouldn't show up as %'s. They really ARE serious about this.

The part I have never understood, wether it's here or among people:

Every replacement word that people angry about the word tell others to use, are historically and factually representative of the same implication. It's strange to me how the word itself matters and somehow the context doesn't.

Okay so a couple things...

1). I'm not on the Mod team obviously so don't quote me, lol, but I'm going to guess that when a word is censored on the forum you shouldn't use it - period, even in it's censored form. This forum is not like other gaming forums, there's a very high limit on what you can say in terms of curse words - I mean the forum instructions on the side from Riot themselves literally has "Oh shit" in it. So the few words that ARE censored should just be avoided period, and I know there's an argument over being able to use what I guess I'll call the "r-word" in this post(lol). For a long time we've had dual uses for the word, like with the word "gay" and so on. However, nowadays it's generally not looked at in a good way to use the r-word as an insult or to say something is bad/dumb - so yeah.

2). Yes, I'm almost positive that other ban played a roll in giving you a harsher punishment for saying the r-word. Also how many posts you get reported or removed probably play a role too. If you would have had a history of no posts removed, and no forum bans, you probably would have just gotten your post removed and a warning - or at worst a 1-day ban. But since you have a history of getting posts removed and a 1-day ban already under your belt, yes, it made your punishment stiffer this time to hopefully "teach you a lesson."

League has a pretty chill moderation team and set of rules for the forum, and I say this as someone who has spent a lot of time on other game's forums and found their rules and what they ban you for to be absolutely absurd.......so maybe reevaluate your state of mind, and language, when you come on the forum if you're running into bans and removals this frequently.

Hopefully these three days fly by for you!

Considering some of the mods on here, that isnt surprising.

Heh, 40 years from now, it will be a different word. "R word" will retire back into use along with idiot, stupid, moron ect into the list of words used in precisely the same context (these words were used historically for the same description) Society is odd. I don't use it personally because it bothers people, and not using it doesn't hinder me in any way as other words are nearly literal synonyms in context.

She is ridiculous.

I see African Americans/Latinos throwing around the n-word all the time(white ppl and Asians aren't allowed to though, nice).

I see homosexuals call each other f**** and they're usually ok with non-LGBTQ ppl using the word non-insultingly. But straight ppl for some reason self-regulate themselves by prohibiting use of the word.

Definitely have seen autistic/r%%%%%ed people use autistic/r%%%%%ed as insults/derogatory/negative connotation. And now it's referred to as the "r-word"

Just last week saw someone on the boards refusing to directly say "idiot", alluding to it as the "i-word"

It's ridiculous. Next, "fatass" will be banned for being offensive to type 1 diabetics or people who were born with higher bmi scores.

The automated IFS/ report system in League plays on this too. It detects and flags certain phrases/words that are deemed "toxic" or "negative". It's basically creating a bank of forbidden words that players aren't allowed to use, even as paraphrases, quotes, or references, at the risk of having their account punished (2-6 months of reforming at least). Many people opt to not type at all now. From personal experience, I've baited out several people who create negative gameplay experiences into saying these kinds of words, and, on more than one occasion, those games result in "a player you reported has recently been punished".

This comment/post will probably quickly be shutdown because of how political this type of discussion becomes.

Time to ban NA teachers for calling their students tardy.

PaladinNO7/23/2019, 10:28:38 AM4 votes

That doesn't make any sense at all! I have used the same word as purely a descriptive term, to repeat exactly what I was called by someone ingame.

I got a warning that I "shouldn't bypass the Board's word filter". https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behavior-moderation/oFye96Eg-can-riot-give-us-better-feedback-on-how-we-are-doing-report-wise?comment=00080000

Ironic how the fact that someone said it to me ingame as an insult was ignored...

Granted, "r%%%%%" is a rather harsh comparison, and not really something that should be used at will to describe something in a video game. But unless the word was used to describe someone (i.e. an insult) and not somethng (a description), there really shouldn't be grounds for a suspension.

The word itself isn't necessarily a insult, and I at least hope not an actual reference or comparison to people with this illness.

Despite everything, the word shouldn't be used lightly, given its current meaning in society.

forist7/23/2019, 4:46:49 AM3 votes

So, the r***** word or any other variance of the word is considered pejorative language. Therefore, regardless of context; using the word on the boards will be both censored and removed by moderation as long as someone takes the time to report your comment.
