Astral Infusion should not cost health (Soraka)

Pristinelyssia··5 votes·3,805 views

Astral Infusion should not cost health (unless Soraka was a valid target for it/able to cast it on herself) that Starcall/Starfall does not effectively make up for...

the point is that Soraka is more dependent on Item Builds, Runes, Masteries, Summoner Spells (AND her own ultimate ability) than the majority of available champions at large; making her Tier far lower than her measured difficulty projects.

the simple solution would be to make Soraka a valid target for her own Astral Infusion.

the ideal solution would be to remove the health cost.

if healing costs the healer their own health, then they're not quite a healer.

it costs health because the problem with the old soraka is, quite literally, just maxing CDR and mana regen with high AP to spam heals for days with no counterplay and no interaction whatsoever.

she literally was an hp and mana battery back before rework, especially for champs like ezreal who spammed abilities to poke from a distance and she would just regen his mana and hp whenever he needed it. glad they took her mana refill away and made her heal cost her hp so she has to make actual decisions and makes tradeoff heals. Sure technically she CAN heal herself with Q, but she has to come at you for it.

Pristinelyssia2 votes

this same mechanic applies to any healer, mage (or just range champs for that matter).. everyone who heals should just lose hp when they do it then.

healer, mage and ranged champs are all easy to play make builds for to this flawed extent. Soraka is not special in this way.

Sightless662 votes

Soraka is not special in this way.

Soraka is special because she's the only healer who is actually good at healing. She easily outputs over three times the in-fight healing of champions like Sona, Nami, Taric, etc. In the past, that meant that she could take champions not balanced around sustain, and give them stupid amounts of sustain without putting herself at any risk, but even back then she wasn't really that good at healing. When she was reworked, the tradeoff for making her the only good healer in the game was the introduction of a mechanic to make her more vulnerable and give her enemies a way to respond to her. That was a good decision.

This does not apply to other champions. When any of them can heal allies for as much as Soraka can, they'll probably need vulnerability-increasing mechanics too. Until then, it's not a justifiable comparison.

statistically;

soraka spends less time healing, and loses hp to do so. in a game where champions who can heal are forced to only heal and are not allowed to do anything else, Soraka will (statistically) prove to be the (worser/)worst.

(without items, and while only using astral infusion); champions who do not lose their own hp, (and/or) can restore their own hp will have an easier time healing allies than soraka will.

soraka would have to recall more often; (which does not only put her in a lower tier as a healer), but also puts soraka in a lower tier as a leveling asset on a team, as she misses out on lane experience harvesting, by not there for a greater amount of time.

the only advantage that soraka has as a "healing champion" is that she can transfer the regeneration she gains from starfall (which MUST strike an enemy champion).

because Soraka's ability to heal is DEPENDENT on another ability that she must take time to develop AND HARMS the healer (creating a new problem for Soraka as a support, she is lower tier in more than one areas because Soraka has COMPLICATIONS that other champs simply don't need to cope with - which makes them better).

"statistically"

so the truth is actually the opposite of what u say (in terms of balance).

no other champion "puts themselves at risk" as a result of restoring an allies hp.

i actually shoulnt have to say this.

this is the face of true character balance that i'm addressing here.

Sightless662 votes

in a game where champions who can heal are forced to only heal and are not allowed to do anything else

Let me know when you find that game. In the meantime, I'll play League of Legends.

Seriously, you're arguing based on a theoretical "if we just spammed the heal ability until resources depleted, what would happen?" That's not a real scenario, and it doesn't acknowledge her strengths, such as much higher healing over a discrete period of time. I don't care even a little bit about the results of your hypothetical test, because it doesn't matter.

the only advantage that soraka has as a "healing champion" is that she can transfer the regeneration she gains from starfall

No, that's not her only advantage. Her biggest advantage is that her healing over any short period of time is much, much, much higher than anyone else's healing. For example, Nami heals for 185 every 10 seconds. Soraka heals for 200 every 2 seconds. That's over 5 times the total healing output on a single target over an 8 second period, and that's without taking alignment into account. That's Soraka's strength. She can actually save lives with healing in situations where other healers simply can't.

You have to acknowledge her higher healing output. You've failed to do so thus far.

no other champion "puts themselves at risk" as a result of restoring an allies hp.

No other champion heals even 1/3 as much as her either, so that's fair. When they heal as much as her, they'll get similar restrictions.

Pristinelyssia1 votes

you're not being pragmatic by being a smart-allelic, bby.. LoL is still in beta and for all we know Gpotato or someone could suddenly take over and (even if they didn't) things could change the way they always do.

Sightless662 votes

Whatever you say mate. You worry about what might happen someday and I'll continue knowing how Soraka's design works.

Pristinelyssia1 votes

Soraka's design is not more important than breaking the enemy nexus (which Sora is not good for and never really was - especially without an abusive build involved).

let's see how well you read into this, since u apparently know so much.

Sightless662 votes

She's on the nexus-breaking team 54.35% of the time. Seems just fine at it to me. Or are you complaining that she's not actually physically doing the damage that breaks the nexus? Or are you complaining that she's not winning the game by doing enough things with your "tiers" idea that you've been trying to get other people to accept? It's not clear, because you didn't say anything.

let's see how well you read into this, since u apparently know so much.

I know more about Soraka's design than you. I don't know more about what you're thinking than you do. If your goal is to change the topic without saying what you want to change the topic to and seeing if I can follow, we can just cut that short right now.

What exactly are you trying to say? You've changed the topic from specifically Soraka's design to some vague complaint about breaking the enemy nexus, but you haven't said why you think Soraka is poorly designed for that, or what constitutes an "abusive build" and how that relates to her current design, and you haven't responded to me saying what specific advantages she had over other healers. Give me something to respond to, and I'll respond. Make vague statements that don't have any explanation of your thought process, and all I can do is ask you to clarify.

Pristinelyssia1 votes

i would take the time to answer your (otherwise intelligent question); but you decided to make it about "acceptance" rather than pragmatism, and about beating your chest, rather than right or wrong. . . so since you know so much you shouldnt have a problem without me.

ANOTHER "GREAT" DODGING OF A VALID QUESTION BY THIS POLITICIAN WANNABE! STAY TUNED FOR MORE ON "WHAT ON EARTH IS THE OP OF THIS POST TRYING TO SAY?" Will we ever find out? Judging from the replies so far, NO. (because they cannot explain themselves or their points without tons of hypothetical situations that make no sense)

I thought your point for THIS ENTIRE POST was that the hp cost should be removed. And now you are saying that you are in favor of it?

Eh, I still win games by going Tank Soraka. I don't care who says what it works. >_>

maxaroni1181 votes

lol tank soraka makes it so that u are losing more health everytime

i would just build more ap and health regen and other tanky stat so u dont die bcuz ur squishy looking and u heal a lot more too

anyhow in response to the actual post:

i think u are right in a sense of her being able to heal herself but only by using the q

i think that if u can heal urself by using the q then she will be better and idk satisfy ur problem with soraka atm

ModAttysu The Poro2 votes

Spirit Visage and Warmogs gives you ridiculous health regen along with constant q's (because of course buy mana regen,) and you'll be fine. Yes you lose more health, but you regen a lot more.

maxaroni1181 votes

uhh hell no

u actually lose tons of health and u can get blown up so much easier if u build just health

u are actually better off going resists rather than health

the regen is barely anythinng

a level 6 garen can regen faster than the soraka can with spirit Visage

soo no

im no soraka player but i know this for sure

building health is suicide (literally)

The Last Ballad2 votes

Of course a lvl 6 Garen can regain faster. HE HAS A MINI WARMOG'S PASSIVE! What kind of comparisin is that? "This champion who has a passive that makes him regenerate health faster regenerates health faster that this squishy champ with the worst health regen in the entire game." ಠ_ಠ Well no duh.

Not to mention, do not tell someone that something they have used to win games will not work, when you do not even play the champion. They just gave evidence to as why it works, but you, someone who has never tried it, must know better. Right?

A Soraka with Spirit's visage and Warmogs regenerates 15%(+25% of that number) of her health every 5 seconds, split into half second heals. So if she has 3000 health exactly she will regenerate 562.5 health every 5 seconds, or 56.25 health per half second. Each heal would take 300 health. So it would take 2.5 seconds for her to regenerate the 300 health. And this build, plus the unholy grail, gives her 100 mr and godly health regain. So there is the math as tho why Spirit's visage + Warmogs does work(and by the way, 562 hp/5 is nothing to sneeze at)

maxaroni1181 votes

not saying it doesnt work... sure it works...

im just saying the health cost will be higher and making it kinda idk dumb?

ur building expensive items to make ur abilities cost more? like what im just saying

u can build spirit's visage but warmogs is probably a big no no

too much health means more health costs, means losing more health ( i think the warmogs passive counts the w as a cancel of the regen so its kinda useless anyhow)

The Last Ballad1 votes

Nope, health costs do not count as damage, so they do not cancel the passive. If it did you would be right, it wouldn't be worth the extra gold. Building health on Soraka is dumb, unless the health is compensated by godly health regain(like warmogs/spirit visage gives you). It costs more to heal, but on the other hand, your sustain is incredible and you can keep the heals up indefinitely(as long as you can stay out of danger) This build is mostly used on ARAMs where going back to base is not even possible. And since on ARAMs heals are haved, you need twice the amount to be effective.

And I said it once, and I will say it again, two people have now verified that this build works. It is not always the best build option, but it does have situations that it shines in. Please stop trying to tell me that it does not work when I have been using this build on ARAMs(and some normals) successfully since October.

maxaroni1181 votes

lol ok well i can see now what u mean cuz i always tot warmogs would stop regen if u used your w

but still u would be focused first in a team fight in my opinion

so it depends on what elo

maybe in bronze to gold this will work but i dont think past plat it will

Pristinelyssia1 votes

Riot should hire me as an off site problem solver. im uncannily intelligent in that way~ i can look at something for a very short time and tell you what the problem is.

and if i look at league of legends, the first problem i see (in terms of balance) is the silence status.

there are some other problems too... (in terms of balance) on the topic of movement speed. each champ has generally the same natural movement speed, when in perspective i'm sure some champs would physically run and walk faster than others (inherit ability load outs aside).

each champion would shine more if their legitimate movement speed was considered before abilities were added.

like i imagine that Champs like Ashe and Katarina and Riven and Quinn are all generally faster on foot than champs like Leona or Lux or Karma or Soraka..

it would do more to balance them if they all move a speed befitting the theme of the character.

shyt like that i can just see.

Uh huh. So you realize that, by removing Astral Infusion's health cost, you'll be creating other problems that aren't being addressed in your original post?

Compared to other healing abilities, Astral Infusion has some of the best scaling in terms of health restoration, mana cost, and cooldown time. At rank 5 with no AP items or CDR, it costs 70 mana, heals for 200, and has a cooldown of 2 seconds. Having to sacrifice her own health in order to cast it is what makes this ability "balanced". If she didn't have to, she would have way too much sustain in the lane and in teamfights, and can just mindlessly spam W+M1 on the carries, making her kit uninteractive and boring. Her current kit encourages making smart decisions with Astral Infusion. She doesn't have very strong CC like other supports, but she is one of the best healers in the game. The scaling on her W is what allows to her potentially turn a teamfight around, but it's up to you to determine if it's worth making yourself an easier target for the enemy team, if it's worth rushing in and sacrificing most of your health to save the carry and being easily picked off. If you take the risk and it rewards your team in the end, then it doesn't matter if you live or die. You still put your team a step closer to winning the game. If it fails, then you learn from your mistakes and try again next opportunity.

Starcall is... sort of fine. The flat damage scaling per rank is somewhat questionable considering the short cooldown and low mana cost, but the health returned from hitting a champion is fair. At 200 AP, Starcall will restore around 21 health eight times in four seconds. Unless you've built more than 1000 health in items, this almost covers the cost of one Astral Infusion. But what's more important is that your next Astral Infusion on an ally after hitting an enemy with your Q will apply the healing-over-time effect on them as well, potentially doubling or tripling the effectiveness of your next heal.

Also, "silence is OP"? Yeah, no. It's sort of effective against "caster" ADCs and midlaners-- Why am I wasting my time with this. You're trolling.

you might think you're considering a lot, but that's not the focus of this thread. . .

y?

because i'm asking the readers and posters of this thread to remember and consider the fact that LoL is still in an imperfect beta; and you're still addressing various elements of the game as if they are perfect enough for measurement against the values of champions when they should not be.

i already expressed my opinion that everything in LoL needs to be reworked, and so comparing on imperfect element against another as a means to try to prove the perfection of either of this is redundant (which is my problem with exactly what you do).

if you try to prove that something is "perfect" by putting it in a scenario with something else obviously as equally imperfect than you make a fool of yourself by creating an even more imperfect condition.

all you are doing is citing a myriad of elements in the game that need to be reworked (because they are not perfect) and trying to present them as parameters to justify the injustice to Soraka's perfect state.

i'm glad you agree. but if no one who plays that role doesn't spend any time focusing on it, then their team won't win the next game. . . and that's literally all i'm doing in this metaphor (there's nothing wrong with that).

speaking of winning games thoe; if a support takes the exchange of our metaphorical batter in LoL, then they need to spend some time "in the cage" at some point, or else their team can't win the game. . . y?

because even just being good or lucky enough to "knock the ball out of the park" DOES NOT automatically mean your team wins a game, it just allows everyone at their base to score a point by running home if they are even there to do that.

if you don't knock the ball out of the park, you get blamed (which is a big part of my point here).

you happen to be correct (actually); i have no choice but to acknowledge the truth; and you happen to be right in this facet.

however, the items system needs to be reworked as do the runes and masteries (which is why they are constantly under Riot scrutinization).

if you release a game only to change something about it later on, then you are admitting that you didn't entirely know what u were doing (during the game design step), and still clearly may not.

no support character should have stats that make them breakable or effective in any other way than their role by means of items or other extras. . .

. . . this is the only reason Soraka has been as successful as she has been.

if you don't agree then you don't love the health of the Riot company.

Some other facts i want to share:

1.) more female players buys skins than male players buy skins.

2.) some skins male players don't buy (even when they are "catfishing"), and females do buy and players can be profiled by sex just on this information alone.

3.) most males players would find another free game to play and don't truly love Riot if the company went out of business and the "grill gamers" would actually be hurt.

4.) more female players buys skins for the males players than the male players (even) buy champions for themselves (not to mention skins); - when skins is what Riot likes to put out more often than any other product they produce.

You're right, I can't dispute it. You say the source proves "the function of LoL" yet all it tells me is that you suck at playing riven against a volibear. Because there is no context to it(that is a thing you need to provide when you source something) This is how context goes. "In this game I proved _____(insert your point). Here is the source that proves that. ____(insert link)." But that is the absolute barest bones way of doing it, not to mention it's rather clumsy. But at least it fits your writing style.

As for the other "facts", cite sources or don't even bother saying them. If you cannot provide actual statistics and sources for said statistics, then I am forced to conclude that your "facts" are false.

For instance;

1.) more female players buys skins than male players buy skins.

In a percent, how many more female players buy skins than male players(CITE IT)

2.) some skins male players don't buy (even when they are "catfishing"), and females do buy and players can be profiled by sex just on this information alone.

OK, just let me stop you there.

  1. How do you catfish on LoL? This is a game where you fight other players to the death. Repeatedly. Rarely will people try to get dates off of this game.

  2. Which skins are males not buying? And how does one profile a person by what they buy?

3.) most males players would find another free game to play and don't truly love Riot if the company went out of business and the "grill gamers" would actually be hurt.

If Riot went out of buisness all players would have to find another game to play. And most of them would be rather put out about it too. I fail to see how this is just a male thing.

4.) more female players buys skins for the males players than the male players (even) buy champions for themselves (not to mention skins); - when skins is what Riot likes to put out more often than any other product they produce.

I don't know, this sounds like baloney without any sources that give you credibility. These "facts" sound like you made them up on the spot and counted on other peoples' stupidity to not call you out on them. That was a mistake.

this post is not sexist it's statistically "factual".

It is completely sexist, as everything you said was in favor of females or against males, and you should not say that something is statistically factual, when you don't even have one statistic or proven fact in it.

AND THE TWO PARTS OF THIS POST ARE NOT EVEN ON THE SAME TOPIC!

WHY?

One more thing, how does this relate to Soraka in any way?
