Should you always have 1 champ for ranked?

So a friend of mine mains a champion, and if he gets the role he wants, and his main isn't banned, he always plays that champion in ranked, nothing else. Is this a smart approach to ranked, as it is staying in your comfort zone? The way I used to do it was, I'd wait and see who their mid laner is, and decide based on what counters it. But ever since I've been using my friend's mindset, I've been winning a lot more games. Should I keep playing the same champion over and over in ranked?

just play what you are best at... so if you are best at cait adc play cait adc

have a back up if your main is banned

but its best to have a deeper pool of champs that you can play effectively to always put yourself in the best match up

Counterpicking does no good if you cant play the counter, and in lower ELOs, people are so bad that counters tend to be playstyle more than champion.

I suggest you have 2-3 champions you can pick that cover various hard counter weaknesses, focus on playing one of them, the others as backups.

I would generally recommend having about 3 champions in each role that you want to play. this provides sufficient versatility to handle most situations and provides options for each game.

When choosing your champions, you should try to find a few champions in different niches who you enjoy playing.

For example, if you were building a pool for mid-lane, you might want something like:

Lux Siege (waveclear+poke), utility (shield, snare, slow and vision) and burst damage Ahri Roaming, pick/catch potential, kiting Varus Physical damage, siege potential (poke, waveclear), utility (AoE snare)
