Udyr seems to have what I call "Pre Rework Sion Sindrome".

Before Sion's rework, nearly anything was viabel on him and he was constantly unhealthy.

Udyr seems to break many items, while also needed constant balancing.

On Udyr, nearly anything is viable. Almost any item (The gold supp items are an outlier) are viable on him. He can go tank, AP, attack speed, AD, DPS, Bust, and some players use different forms much more then others. Old Sion was similar as you could really build almost anything on him.

Note: This post is not saying Udyr needs a rework, is OP/UP, or anything of the sort. It is just a look at something that may need to be looked at in the future.

Well, that's the beauty of his kit. They designed him like that on purpose.

Q - Max this when you are playing full AD or autoattack build W - Max this when tanking (slightly overtuned numbers) E - Max this second when splitpushing/tanking (could be overtuned) R - Max when you're building heavy AP, good for splitpush (overtuned for sure)

The way they designed the kit is that you can max any given one at your expense without the other three becoming a liability or becoming useless, but the one you maxed is going to be really strong. Kinda like what they're currently doing with the elemental and elder dragons. Or as you described:

nearly anything is viable. Almost any items are viable on him

It just so happens that at least one of those four abilities are or were incredibly overtuned given the current meta (considering both champs and items)

Can you see why it's incredibly hard to balance something like this without either breaking it or making it one of the worst kits?

This is he problem I think. Too much power in one spot and not enough focus.

You could say the same thing about Blitz tho. I dont think this is a bad thing in of itself.

Ans Sion couldn't have anything build on him. It was more a case of you could only really go 2 ways and sacrifice half your kit depending on which.

However if you go X build on Udyr, then you will primarily use X ability mostly. The other abilities you use for the one AA or for a camp. I'm not sure it's a bad thing either, but this post was just a small thing I thought was interesting.

The difference is that your stil using all of your Kit as Udyr whereas AP Sion might as well of had 2 abilities despite being the more popular way to play him, even tho he was blatantly designed to go AD/tanky.

Udyr is more of a case of his versatility being an intended part of his design as you have 4 stances, no ult and 18 points.

Im no Udyr player or anything, and your post does make for interesting discussion. I just think that you might be putting the cart b4 the horse here. Versatility is fine as long as the champ gives something up for goign one way as opposed to the other and Udyr might be the epidemy of this.

I can't say whether he is or not, but AI just think Udyr might be a it too versatile. It makes him harder to balance and no clear focus on what he is supposed to do. It does however create a different gameplay and I see what you mean. AP Sion really could only use two abilities, while Udyr can still use them all effectively. Main,y my point is that his kit inst focused and he can build whatever he wants.

I don't' know if it's just me, but I've been starting to see you more on the Gameplay Boards and it's nice to see people with good and constructive comments.

That's a good observation.

I rather enjoy being able to flex builds on the fly Fizz

It's true it takes more upkeep though. And that doesn't mean some builds aren't better than others more often
