Talking about Karthus, since we gave Graves his cigar back... (and jungle Karthus talk)

Can we please give our favourite preacher of death his face back since we can ship now the bone-free version to china? He's done stacking 6 tears but he says nothing will fill the void or ease his pain...

On a less cosmetic note, I really fucking love Karthus, his theme, his eerie aestheric, his playstyle, having 5 people yelling at me in /all chat whenever i press R and have my team curse at me for securing kills as well... I love it all. Especially because (surprise surprise) HE'S A PRETTY DAMN GOOD JUNGLER. (As his champion spotlight says as well but in case there are some miscreants here's an example of his clear, which still has room for improvement) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzJuIwwN95k For those who don't know Karthus has seen jungle play since the earliest seasons thanks to an unknown to most guy called Azingy and he has a pretty good success since once you learn how to kite you can have pretty fast and healthy clears, some decent ganks and you outscale into late game as well, but he has been hit pretty hard since the Ryilai nerfs that make sense for champions such as elise who can still build that item but doesn't fit well in a build suited for a pure damage carry such as karthus, he also needs to stack tear as well but some would argue that's not a mandatory item on him after all. He suffered from the Zhonya nerfs as well since right now is built by champions that have their strenghts in their kits and just need the zhonya for the cooldown and active, which they were both core items on him. His ult cooldown may be fine for season 3 standards but right now is really damn long especially because none of your other spells need their cooldown reduced so building it on him just to reduce the cd on a spell that has a tactical use only insead of being "some more damage" and thus in need of cooldown reduction is pretty much wasted stats on him.

What could be done with Karthus is

  1. Buff his wall (which was heavily nerfed due to Rylai but wasn't unnerfed back after the Rylai nerfs) so that he can have a realiable tool for CCing during a gank. (Also a trimming on this cooldown wouldn't hurt either)
  2. Maybe make his Q apply red buff? So it doesn't feel as a wasted buff on him unless he's taking down a turret or regenerating his HP.
  3. Increase the tick rate of how often E gets applied (this doesn't increase the damage for those who are wondering) so that you don't waste a tick on a jungle monster that would have died anyway even without the need of E damage.
  4. Bring his ult cooldown to current season standards.
  5. Find a way around his dependance on Zhonya since right now is a pretty bad item unless you're already good with your own kit or other items that compensate

The build i believe to be correct on him should be a classic build with jungle item, lotsa of magic penetration and high end AP items suited for a classic AOE mage with no CDR, something like this item 3020 item 1402 item 3027 item 3135 item 3151 item 3089

So, this boils down to: can we make some work on him to give him back viability for mid lane (which doesn't seem to suffer much there) and jungle as well?

I can only assume that since rumble 'q' and amumu 'e' got changed, that he'll be next. Old code is like mom's spaghetti. I don't agree with any other point your trying to make though. I will only elaborate by saying I feel I get zhonya for two reasons:

  1. I'm going to be starting teamfights (rumble/kennon/swain)
  2. I need to avoid a high cd+high burst damage ult (syndra/veigar/talon)

If none of those apply, I'll usually skip it because of his passive.

Your build seems decent though.

He also needs it because it's ok to die stratgically in a choke point, tank some spells from the enemy team to reduce their damage output in a teamfight without reducing your own and to die in a teamfight to keep dishing out damage, but it shouldn't be assumed that karthus needs to die to be played at his fullest. Also most stats are balanced around season 3, he's very very squishy compared to other AP mages and he's definitely not tanky enough for his short range. (which makes me think maybe of an E that extends its range if you're hit by Q or wall for example)

Initiate for your team --> team follows up while you activate zhonyas --> you back off or keep going depending on how much damage you took.

I guess it's less worse (still not "ok") to die on karthus than on another mage, sure. You could make a sweet play by suiciding onto the enemy team trying to do baron. Potentially stopping them from doing it, or atleast giving your team enough time to follow up for a steal.

And yes he's immobile and squishy... but not all mages can come to back life after death for a short period. I feel atleast that part of him is balanced enough. Once he's lvl 6, he exerts global map pressure with his ult. Your enemies will fear being low hp.

What most people don't do is use his ult as a simple form of damage: wouldn't you like to have an additional source damage if you're doing a 1v1 top or bot? Or if your jungler is invading?

Well when I play him mid lane atleast I find it tough to get a kill. The typical meta-picks for mid lane all have some sort of dash (cept syndra) so it's even tough to land your 'q'. An extra ability might help as long as it's not a skill shot. I think I find myself just last hitting and not dying until I hit lvl 6.

Good thing about karthus is that he's tough to dive under tower...and even if you kill him he can still kill you afterwards with the tower's help.
