Ranked Matchmaking

I am not a competitive person and don't generally care about ranked play. But today, on a whim, I decided to queue up for a ranked game. I assumed that as a bronze player, I would be matched with people of a similar skill level. Instead, me and another bronze were on a team with two silver players and a gold. Which I assume means similar ranks on the other team. Of course, this meant the other bronze player, being top lane, got dumpstered hard and flamed by the gold/silver players ALL GAME, I was barely useful at all either, going 0/6/5 in bot lane as support, and it was generally not a pleasant experience...

Was I wrong to assume that bronzies like me would be matched with other bronzes or MAYBE a single low silver? Or is this the norm? If I played ranked more often, would I just need to expect to regularly end up with/against players FAR higher in rank and just accept that those games are probably losses?

The truth is, bronze and silver aren't very different.. they're almost interchangeable at this point. The gold against bronze players however I feel is unfair, but at the same time queves may get exceedingly long if they do matching too specifically.

I know that this type of thing is very annoying to deal with, but statistically it happens to those opponents that you're facing as well(where they would be going against a gold as a gold, but then they have a bronze on their team that gets dumpstered by a gold, etc.) I tend to steer clear of ranked because video games to me are supposed to be a way of stress relief, but in ranked people treat the game as if it were life or death o.o.. that being said if you ever want to play a normal game or something and need someone to play with, I'd be down! ^^
