How does it even match me against someone so much of a higher elo than me?

normals are different than ranked
Normals and ranked MMR's are separate. It is not uncommon for high ranking players to have near 'starting' mmr since they almost exclusively play ranked rather than normals (so their normals mmr hasn't 'caught up'), and similarly low ranking players who do play normals a lot can have higher than you might expect normals MMR (particularly if they play the champs they're relatively good at in normals, as many people screw around in their off roles/champs in normals, and hence those playing their mains in normals tend to rise a bit further than they would in ranked).
