Yorick Passive Change Idea

A problem that I often run into while playing as Yorick is how difficult it is to raise ghouls outside of laning phase. Yorick's ult does raise ghouls, however it has one of the longest cooldowns in the game so it is often unavailable for skirmishing. This long cooldown, coupled with the fact that most teamfights do not start where Yorick has easy access to graves (for example, in the jungle) means that Yorick is often unable to fully utilize his kit.

To solve this, I suggest changing his passive, which has a low impact at nearly all stages of the game.

Currently, Yorick's passive raises a grave for every 12/8/4 minion that dies near him (at levels 1/7/13). This ability is not very useful in lane and does little to help Yorick raise ghouls out of laning phase.

My suggestion is to change yorick's passive to the following ability: Sheperd's Call: Every 30/20/10 seconds (at levels 1/7/13), Yorick stores a grave in his cloak (max: 3). When Yorick has stored 3 graves, his next cast of awakening (second Q cast) will consume these and any nearby graves to summon up to 4 mist walkers.

The number of graves that Yorick has stored would be visible underneath his mana bar, like Jhin's ammo. The idea that I was going after was to give Yorick better access to ghouls outside of lane in the mid/late game without significantly impacting his ability to raise ghouls in laning phase.

Let me know what you think about this idea and/or your ideas to change Yorick (if you feel he needs any changes)!

Hm... If we could prioritize "real" graves over "cloak" graves and not consume the cloak charges if "real" graves are present, that could work. Otherwise, I feel like the Yorick would accidentally deplete his cloak every time he just wanted to summon ghouls in lane, defeating the purpose of the change.

Note that the current passive is pretty important for Yorick's late-game pushing power. Being entirely reliant on his Q to generate graves is fine in the early game, but if you hit a huge late-game minion wave, you want those ghouls up quick, and you want to continually refresh them.

That would really help out his late game

An important thing to remember when playing Yorick is that you do almost nothing but push top lane and maybe switch to bot if they're struggling. Yorick does not teamfight often. That's not what he's supposed to really do. He's supposed to push top until the enemy team comes to get him. then he recalls and spends his gold, going back to farm some more and get a double kill when the enemy jungler comes in. If he's doing his job right, he'll have enough graves to summon more Ghouls before his previous Ghouls even die. Constantly pushing a wave is what Yorick is about, making him a team-fighter as well would give him an unfair advantage in being able to dominate a teamfight and then go take all of top-lane by himself. Adding this would do any one, or all, of these things:

  1. Make it easier to play Yorick, which may sound good, but would end badly. Yorick is pretty strong and making him a champ you can pick up quickly (it takes a while to figure out how to use his passive) would lead to him being abused and nerfed to oblivion.
  2. Absolutely nothing, which is more likely. Those who know how to play him and play him correctly wouldn't notice a difference. They would just have those extra ghouls in their pocket to...do nothing with? A good Yorick will only partake in a teamfight if he absolutely has to.
  3. His position would diversify... Support Yorick, Jungle Yorick, I see it and I think that'd be cool, but for the reasons mentioned above, probably unwise.

Yorick's current passive is perfectly fine and does not need a change. If it was to be changed as you were suggesting with some sort of stock system, it would make Yorick almost broken. His current passive works so that early game he needs set up time before doing mass amounts of damage, that way a smart opponent can take advantage of this and be aggressive when he has no graves, which is the whole point of the ability early game.

As for late game, I too have occasionally ran into what I like to call " 2 Graves Syndrome" later in the game, where you only have 2 graves and need 1 more to use awakening. However, the way you can resolve this is to go to your nearest raptor or wolf camp and just Q them all. Or if you are grouping with your team you can just ask them to let you get some last hits with Q.
