Champion Mastery: (Realistically) Additional Ideas for Future Level Rewards

With Champion Mastery coming around, Riot dropped the initial rewards for the first 5 levels. These include Title for LVL 1-3 and custom emote, load screen badge, announcement banner for level 4-5. Riot stated that they intend to expand Champion Mastery in the future and add more levels and associated rewards.

I think Champion Mastery is a welcome addition to the game. Gives more reason to play and gives us something to show for it. I'd like to see the system do well, and I'm especially curious of what is to come. I'd like to throw out some ideas of what I think would be cool rewards in the future, and I'd like others to participate to get some ideas going. Who knows, we might bring something awesome forward that Riot may implement (they are asking for our feedback after all).

First off, I'd like to analyze the current line up of rewards. I'd like to get an idea of Riot's thought process, so we can propose ideas that are grounded and within reasonable capabilities. Looking at the current rewards, I noticed some common attributes:

**-Rewards were more personal or team oriented. Really all of the rewards can only be seen by you or your team (for the custom emote, only you and your teammates can see it) except for announcement banner. ** Seems that Riot is avoiding pushing indications of high level Mastery into opponent's faces. Makes sense, can be obnoxious and toxic to opponents (bad enough if I lose a trade or die, really don't need a Challenger Rank Mastery level 99999 flashing contentiously over my corpse with announcer screaming OWNAGE). Teammates can see, but this would have a positive effect to teammates as it's often uplifting to see a veteran on the team.

-Rewards seem universally interchangeable between difference champions, so same rewards are used in all champions. For champion titles, they seem to be broad like Marksman 'Ranger' which could be applied to say Ashe or Varus. Custom emote is the same (representation of Mastery level) and seems designed in such a ways to look good over anyone. This indicates that rewards should be able to be universally applied to all champions. This makes sense since development for customized things (such as a frost boarder for Ashe and fire boarder for Brand) would require a significant development, and isn't practical for Riot to invest in considering this would be a free feature.

**-Rewards are subtle, and don't seem to interfere in anyway with visual and audio game play elements. ** There are a lot of visual and audio cues that us players watch and listen for to give us an idea of what's going on in game and is an important element to preserve. None of the rewards seem to interfere with this.

Given this insight, we can realistically set our expectations for what can and can't be done. Believe me, I'd love it if there was a reward in which a sound bit plays of a crowd cheering when I get a double kill... which would then grow louder as the kill streak ramped up and culminated into fireworks blasting from my champion with sound bits of Thug Life music playing on a penta kill... but that's not going to happen lol.

Anyway, on with the ideas for rewards (don't forget to leave yours):

-Short animation that plays in beginning of the game (during champion spawning). This animation would be brief and would resolve prior to leaving the base walls (teammates would see it but would be longer over before an enemy champion could see it (avoiding indication of Champion Mastery Level). Champions warping in in the beginning of the game can be spiced up. Thinking the animation and effect could be generic, such as a bolt of energy striking the champion from the sky and cause the champion to have some sort of overlay (such as the Tier 5 Dragon Buff).

-Short animation that plays at end of game. This would be most noticeable if champions ends near Nexus as it is blowing up (as camera pans to Nexus). It would also indicate Champion Mastery Level to opponent, but this may be OK since it is end of game. Something like the the player's team flag emerging from the ground next to the champion, or a Poro that appears and dances around the champion would be cool.

-Announcer shout out at beginning of the game only heard by teammates, possible only heard by player. Announcer can play some brief (so not to be repetitive) sound bit such as "Welcome (Champion Name)", "A summoner of mastery approaches", or "Greetings Master of (Champion Name)". Something like that would be neat.

-Small IP/RP reward Simple but effectiv.

-Very short rally animation that plays periodically for nearby minions that are walking but not fighting in combat. Melee/Super minions could raise their weapon and shield, ranged minions their wands, cannon minions could have drivers hop up and down or fist pump. Animation could be very quick (as in half second), but would not play when in combat or close to opponents as to not interfere with last hitting or indicate Champion Mastery Level to opponents.

-Champion icon Again, simple but effective.

-Animated splash art Similar to login in screen. Since not all champions have it, maybe add a sheen or sparkle or something. Most noticeable in champion select.

Some of my ideas, leave your own.

I maintain that if a player hits max mastery on a champion, they should be able to use that champion's icon as their own. One of the first ones suggested (and received countless upvotes), but still one of the best.

Also, I love your rallying animation idea. That would be so cool.

+1 for realistic suggestions that follow riot's limitations. The animations at the beginning of a game could be very cool, and not too intrusive.

I'm still interested in a unique Chromas for later levels.

For a really high level:

Unlock the champion's ability icons as Summoner icons (possibly with a slight overhaul of how the Summoner icon is chosen - a seperate header for champion icons).

I don't want to see Chromas or anything that would excite people that much, tbh. I hope it's just more kinda useless stuff like it is now.

Before you try to thumbs down me off the stage, hear me out. In Smite, mastery levels actually do something. And guess what, people play games where that's all they care about is getting the mastery for who they want. In which case, they'll likely pick someone very bad for the team. And it really showed sometimes. I don't want even the normal games to be too negatively impacted by too many players just trying to get mastery rather than actually trying to do anything that would lead to having a good team at champion select.

upvoting because that's one of the few threads where OP (i mean Original Poster) is like "Ok let's think what Riot may approve with logic" instead of "omg X is OP nerf him and I'm totally right even thought I'm paper 16 and I'm raging because I just lost a match"

Great suggestions man. I would love to see the spawn option you mentioned. One other that I think could be cool and is a variant of that, but also way more common but not annoying, is alt color recall that you could toggle on or off like ward skins. Champions have different recall and maybe I'm making this up but I want to say there is always the little like white/blue teleport lines/landing lines when the recall triggers. Maybe give an alt color for it would be cool.

Asking for 1 refunds when we max X-amount of champions, would be to much to ask right?

warpenguin5555/6/2015, 1:28:16 PM1 votes

Maybe they could have it be like "Ranger Ashe, Welcome to Summoners Rift" for example

Am I the only one who thinks this mastery thing is a wast of resources? It really changes nothing and seems like a useless achievement system most games have.

how about when I master a champion I get 5000000000 bonus atk dmg?
