Why Is Armor Only Available To Tanks?

MR itemization is open to more or less everybody. AD carries and AD casters have items like Maw of Malmortius and Mercurial Scimitar, AP carries have items like Abyssal Scepter and Athene's Unholy Grail, and with Locket and Banner, supports can buy MR for their whole team. Tanks have Banshee's Veil and Spirit Visage, among other options, obviously.

Armor, on the other hand, is much harder to come by: it's more or less only available for tanks. Dead Man's Plate, Frozen Heart, Randuin's Omen, Sunfire Cape, and Thornmail are all built almost exclusively by tanks. To the extent that Ohmwrecker and Zz'rot Portal are built at all, they're also tank items.

There are only a few exceptions: Zeke's is built exclusively by supports (and not so much anymore, since crit chance became so much easier to come by in the preseason patch). Iceborn Gauntlet is a tank item which can be built by Ezreal. The only actual carry item that gives armor is Zhonya's Hourglass, which is mandatory on most or all AP midlaners. If that's not cutting it, you have to go into a purely defensive tank item like Guardian Angel.

Why is this, though? ADCs, with their multiplicatively scaling damage, are meant to go after tanks, whose defenses also scale multiplicatively. If you're trying to encourage the ADCs to go out and bust tanks, why would you make it so that nobody else can build against them, making them far more effective against squishy targets? AP carries, with a few exceptions (Cassiopeia, Azir, etc.) perform poorly against tanks, since their linear scaling struggles to cope with tanks' defenses (HP counters magic damage as well as MR): if MR itemization followed the same logic as armor, tanks would only have one MR item.

I'd like it if armor itemization was more existent all around, might help combat what feels like a very ad bursty heavy season so far.

I wouldn't call defensive stats multiplicative. Defensive stats start off very valuable but lose value as you get more of them.

AD as a stat is fairly static in value but does increase throughout the game with levels, and also increases in value with AS and crit.

AP has a pretty fixed static value that varies depending on the champ. The issue is that right now that value in general isn't much higher than the value of AD, but AD has ways to gain in value and is far more consistent for damage output.

If sustained damage AP mages aren't shredding tanks enough it's because they don't have a worthwhile way to itemize against HP like AD's do (item 3153 ,item 3036 ). item 3151 is most likely going to be changed in the mage update because right now it has an extreme case of confused identity. Once mages have a better anti-health item available I think we'll see sustained AP become more effective against tanks.

I feel you but i think the question was more along the lines of only tanks(and AD bruisers) have a way to effectively build against AD then other archetypes but everyone has a way to build against AP.

... Why wouldn't you call defensive stats multiplicative when your effective health is literally Healthy multiplied by (1 + .01 Armor/Magic Resist)?

Tanks always have a limited ability to engage, making them kitable (exceptions exist) so .. if you can kite a tank/juggernaut and he doesn't hit you ... why you need armor?

I wonder that myself as well. There are too much armor choices for tanks and 0 armor items for AD champs. I guess Riot can't come up with a good item for AD

AD and armor is hard to balance, it tends to result in items that are either subpar or the must buy item for marksmen in lane, because when the major determining factor of who wins a fight is whose autos do more damage AD+armor is usually the strongest combination.

so AD Armor is hard to balance but MR AP is not so we got multiple AP MR items. I don't think that makes sense. Its like you are saying Vi is impossible to balance since she is a Fighter but glass cannons are easy to balance Some champions excel with Glass Cannon others excel as mixed builds Graves gets Armor AD and Galio gets Abyssal Scepter

Because magic damage is less consistent than right clicking. The fact that abilities are generally limited by resources, cooldowns, and your ability to aim means that they have different rules for itemization.

I'm not saying fighters are harder to balance, there's nothing wrong with dealing damage and having some defense which is why item 3071 health+AD is a thing. I could be wrong here, but I think the fear is that AD+Armor becomes a must rush item in AD vs AD matchups, with the winner being determined by whomever got it first.

Doesn't 'race to see who can hit item powerspikes first' describe more or less every botlane in the history of League? It used to be IE, now it's BotRK/Rageblade/Triforce/ER. It's not like anybody but Ezreal is rushing to use Iceborn Gauntlet, and he's far from the only ability-based kiting marksman.

Because Towers and Minions deal Physical Damage.

I don't see any good reason why things should be this way. Even Sterak's is a better option for most champions that aren't tanks if they want to be able to survive physical damage better. If that's allowed, why isn't armor for those champs?
