Peel or Engage Maokai?

So I have been playing Maokai a lot recently, but sometimes I will engage and keep 3 squshies away from my team and somehow they still die? SO my question is, is it better to engage or peel?

Maokai was reworked as a protective tank. His ult is made to reduce the damage his allies take, his root deals % health based damage to take a chunk out of the front line, and his Q and E help him peel.

While you can use him to engage when snowballing, it's best to keep at least 1 or 2 people on your team inside your ult during a teamfight.

React to the situation according to how your team handles fights. If you see your backline struggling with their frontline in fights then sit back at the start and help them get the fight going. Your CDs are low enough as long as you're fairly tanky you can re-engage on the enemy backline once the frontline is dead. If their frontline is a joke and/or you're ahead then just catch the first anyone to step out of position with W and win.

Kind of both, I think. He's not really the type of tank that dives the back line (Amumu Malphite etc), but he can if you need to. I think you want to stick relatively close to your team, but if there's a clear opening and your carries are relatively safe, you can go in.

Peel What is your ult doing if your not with your allies? Why are you knocking people back if it's not away from your allies? His snare DOES catch people, but it's better at ruining assassin dives. Maokai much preferes to stay with his team and disrupt enemies.

Maybe dive is someone else is going in with you, like Xin Zhao.
