Asking for Ryze tips

Hi, I'm learning Ryze, and want to git gud. I mostly play him top lane and rush item 3070 item 1001 item 3027, then finish item 3003 item 3158 and build tanky, usually picking up item 3001 item 3110 and rounding up CDR at 45%. I also run summoner 12 summoner 6 for safety, and for runes, I run mPen reds, armor yellows, and MR blues. I have AD and MS quints.

Some of the important questions I have are:

  1. When should I back first? I've been backing when I have 400 gold for early tear and tp back in. Should I wait until boots too, or item 3010?
  2. Is my build fine? I don't want to go full damage since I'm in top lane and want to contribute some frontline presence. That's also why I haven't been building item 3165 despite it being an amazing item on him, and built as core in high elos.
  3. How should I use my ultimate? I never get it right, so I never end up using it (properly, at least). When I do use it, I often misposition myself so that I get killed soon after (which is also why I build tanky).
  4. How should I build him if I'm behind? Sometimes I find myself behind in gold after getting roa, and rushing Archangel's is a bit difficult due to its cost. I only do this when I'm ahead. Is Frozen Heart a good mid game buy?
  5. What are his good and bad matchups? I try to harass vs most top laners using the range, but I'm not as familar with mid lane matchup, which I get less frequently.
  6. Should I ever max E first? It's sometimes difficult to last hit with E due to its low damage and spread flux. Should I put some points into E and max Q, or should I just practice?
  7. Is Doran's Ring start good sometimes? I always get mana crystal start for early tear, but I'm not sure if this is optimal in every situation.

I have been waiting for this moment, someone who needs help on Ryze.

I used to play Ryze top, but since the current VGU, I decided to move over mid. This is because his new kit plays more similarly to a traditional mage, rather than an AP bruiser as he was then. But if you want to keep playing top Ryze, go ahead if it works for you.

  1. Tear is inefficient in the early game. You're giving up 400 early game gold just to begin stacking. It doesn't actually give you any stats up front. You could grab a Dark Seal if you're an aggressive player. I generally grab a Lost Chapter first back, but it builds into Morellonomicon.

  2. Your build is fine. If you want to be an AP bruiser, get a Rylai's. It gives you much more impact on the game, since you can apply slows to entire teams easily.

  3. Use your ultimate to get a pick out of opponents who are out of position, or to reposition those on your team who are out of position (i.e poppy ulted them away). I coordinate with my tanks, divers, juggernauts, etc. to hop onto my ult so I can deliver them on top of the enemy team.

  4. It's rare to get behind as Ryze, especially in the top lane, because of how oppressive he is in that lane. But if that time ever comes, you could always itemize against their main source of damage (abyssal vs magic, Zhonya's vs attack damage).

  5. There are no counters to Ryze in the top lane that I know of. In the midlane, you definitely want to watch out for those Shurimans (Azir, Xerath, Cassiopeia), as they can overpower you easily with their superior range/damage. Though Azir is pretty garbage atm, and good Xerath players are rare. Use your superior movespeed to dodge skillshots and get within range.

  6. You've been asking what items to build and what spells to max. If you want to git gud with Ryze, you need to know in what situations what should you build or max. Depends on your playstyle. Personally, E max is my standard. I advise against investing your skill points in ultimate early on. I usually put points in there at levels 11/12.

  7. Doran's Ring is a terrible start. You'll do more damage with a mana crystal. Alternatively get Dark Seal. Dark Seal grants you the best stats and most damage out of the 3 starting items.

Generally, the best way to master Ryze is to just play him.

_I nearly forgot to give the most important tip to you! Make sure you have the masteries Runic Armor and Runic Affinity. This is a must for the RUNE mage. _

Do you skip archangel's entirely for more early/mid game power? For my last game (the only game that was long enough for a full build), I finished my build with a Rylai's to counter Nasus. I think it was pretty good, so I might get that regularly. It's less slot efficient, so I'm not sure if that's optimal, though. Maybe both Zhonya's and Frozen Heart, and get a different boots? I'll try coordinating with tanks on my team to initiate. I definitely can't do that on my own. For masteries I went 12/18/0 for Stormraider's, but maybe I should go 0/18/12 for runic armor. That actually sounds really good.

There have been games where I skipped over archangel's, but I usually keep a tear charged up just in case the game extends to late.

Runic Armor is my favorite non-keystone mastery. Not only do I like its icon, but it provides a significant boost to your healing/shields. This includes Seraph's active, and Rod of Ages's passive.

If you ever want a feel for the old Ryze (though it will never be the same, R.I.P my blue man), try spell vamp quints. 6% of the damage you deal will be restored to you. So whether you're soloing drake, or clearing out a minion wave, you can grab a few hundred health back. Don't expect crazy Vladimir-level healing though. A moment of silence for Old Sustain-God Ryze with Spirit Visage and Will of the Ancients.

I did get to try out Ryze when his ultimate gave spellvamp! Was it like 20%? I almost exclusively played bots then (season 4 or 5, I think), so while it's not an accurate measure of Ryze's power, but it was kinda ridiculous indeed.

I checked my masteries, and apparently I had 1 point in vampirism. Given that I get item 3010 early, I think runic armor is definitely better than vampirism in most scenarios.
