Uh, as an adc main I'd like to give you some pointers...

  1. WARD. However, it is not your responsibility alone to ward. Remind your adc and other lanes to ward properly.
  2. Secure kills. This may be a controversial topic, but my stance on the subject is as follows: You HAVE to let your apc/adc get kills because that apc/adc would get more use from the kills that you would, as a support. BUT, if the 10 HP Draven is escaping and you just happen to have one skillshot that can finish him and your adc is out of range, just do it. You might get raged at, flamed, etc. but what matters is he didn't get out alive. Always remember not to chase kills though.
  3. Don't build AD/AP until laning phase, because you need the tankier stats to help your adc
  4. Never flame, this is a general rule but if you flame, your performance as well as your teammates performance will decline. 4b. Instead of flaming, calmly tell your teammates what you think they should do better, or not do at all. This usually gets a better response.
  5. Have Fun(corny af)

Secure kills.

Yep. Assist gold (and free-farming time) are sufficient for the ADC if you can't freely give them the kill. If there is any chance of the target escaping or killing one of you, finish them off ASAP.

Don't build AD/AP until laning phase, because you need the tankier stats to help your adc

Mage supports (i.e. Malzahar, Zyra, Vel'koz, Brand) are an exception to this. Generally, they want to build something along the lines of: item 3303 item 2049 item 3020 item 3136

I'd like to add (as a support main) that try to keep a positive attitude, I like to tell my ADC great job when they get a kill or escape and thank them for warding when I've pinged I don't have wards. (Which you can do by alt + clicking on the ward icon, this also works for other things like skill cooldowns, or ready ults and item cooldowns)

Never forget you are the support, and you're probably going to be ill equipped to fight anyone at most stages of the game (snowballed mage supports possibly excluded). Plenty of times in mid-late game I've seen supports out alone warding and bumping into a quarter health enemy, trying to fight them, and losing the fight since they're down 2 levels and have relatively weak stats from items.

Related, since you're not chasing kills, focus on peeling your carries. This should generally be reflected in the items you're buying.

Keep in mind you're the teams support, not necessarily exclusively the adcs support. If your adc is a monkey and as mid game rolls around it becomes apparent that focusing your peel efforts on the mid laner or jungler is more likely to win you the game, then by all means do so. (But be careful that it is the case that it improves your chances of winning...sometimes you're better off babysitting a worse player to prevent an enemy snowballing than to empower a talented player to carry harder.)

edit: Also, it can be insightful to play adc sometimes in order to learn support. You'll get a feel for what you wish your supports were doing (and then you can do it yourself when supporting), and/or you'll see what other support players are doing that seems effective and you can try to emulate it.

Best advice I can give is to play things with incredibly low skillcaps (soraka/sona being "fun ones" as they also do a scary amount of damage) and get ready to be blamed a ton for random stuff. Unless you're in gold+, people almost expect their supports to be the reincarnation of aphromoo going 0-0-44 with 0cs and warding every bush in the game. When their unrealistic expecations don't happen, they often get a bit angry.

Yes, prepare for the max blaming, all ADC's and even other roles do it once in a while.

You either be mean or help. take your pick Zilean -Soraka. you still help if you be mean but I have used zilean with his 99% speed up ally/slow enemy spell enough to know you can make them walk I little too for.

  1. Grow a thicker skin. This applies to all roles but it's especially important as support.
  2. Try to save kills for your ADC, kill secure only when you have to. But if you do take too many kills, don't be surprised if they're not doing damage.
  3. Never delay or skip building a sightstone. You should get it no later than your tier 2 gold item.

Otherwise just use common sense and have fun.
