Blitzcrank Ideation

Personally I think that Blitzcrank is super outdated. He does not live up to his thematic core and his gameplay is super linear and also outdated. Yet he remained a super popular pick in low and mid tier where players are not good at dodging his hooks. In a time where every champion was designed to work in every position and jungle was an unusual start, Blitzcrank was categorized as fighter how punches the faces of his enemies. Soon he was characterized as "tanky support" from players due to him being melee and not that easy to burst down. Today he his called catcher alongside others like Thresh, Bard, Morgana and others.

Now if you were invited to a Blitzcrank VGU ideation meeting, what direction would argue for?

  • The supportive catcher style and give him more creative ways to engage on singled out enemies?

  • The near indestructible steam golem fantasy of being a helpful tank who protects their allies?

  • The free minded and independent but super hart hitting steel fighter monster who destroys enemies that are aggressive towards him?

I think changing the class of a champion with a rework is almost never a good idea. Also right now, Blitzcrank is defined by his hook. Removing him from the catcher class would almost inadvertently require removing his hook or severely impacting it's usefulness. Don't get me wrong, I would love if Blitzcrank gets a rework, even if that means changing his Q. It's limiting in so many ways. I just feel like a lot of Blitz mains think otherwise.

I didn't mean to change the class rather to redefine his playstyle. I don't think any of the changes require to remove the hook - take Nautilus for example who does have a hook as Tank or Darius/Illaoi with similar tools to bring an enemy into her their own comfort zones.

Blitzcrank's hook takes up a lot of his power budget. I don't think any major changes could be made to him without impairing his hook.
