How did I not get an S?

How did Warwick manage to get an S and I only got and A+? All of our stats are either really close or I came out ahead, the only real stats he has me beaten on are wards placed (by 6) and damage taken (by like 15k). But I beat him in everything else, including damage dealt, gold earned, towers taken, CS, and my KDA (only 3 deaths in an hour long game, wow). I don't really understand this broken system. Is Riot gonna tell me that a few wards and a little damage taken (mind you i still took almost 70k damage) determines the difference between an A+ and an S, especially after the torture that was that game (look at team gold, that game was a nightmare). I'm exhausted and I don't even get rewarded for my good play. I'm a little bit pissed.

Your rank you receive is based on how well other people have done in their games compared to you. So if people have been getting 15 kills per game in top while you only get 11 the system believes you didn't do as well as someone who got an S. It's definitely a flawed system though.

Your grade is based on your percentile performance compared to all other performances on your particular champ played in your particular role, not based on arbitrary numbers. As a result, different champions being played in different roles will sometimes have wildly different performance requirements to get a given grade (which makes sense, since different champs/roles will be doing different things).

Basically WW did better than the majority of WW's in his role, and while you did bettter than most on your champ/role (A+ isn't a bad grade after all), enough people did even better so your grade was 'only' an A+ instead of an S.

wait wait wait wait...

So that means we should be thankful of bronze for our good grades :o?

Basically he's saying that playing something unconventional very well can sometimes get you a very easy S ranking. Doing well Yasuo in mid in comparison to some other people it will be very hard to get an S. Where as you play Yorick Jungle and do well you're very highly likely to receive an S rank.

Bronzies occasionally manage S level performances (which is part of why mmr isn't a factor in grade), but yes, the swarms of horrible performances put forward by less experienced/talented players does make getting an S grade relatively easier. (Although the top tier pro performances make things relatively harder... 'thankfully' theres a lot more bronzies than there are pro players.)

The problem is that I've gotten some S grades on Aatrox where I did a lot worse and was surprised by the S. This game, I felt like I deserved one because of how well I did and didn't get one.

Were you playing aatrox in the same role though? Aatrox jg is a different beast from Aatrox top for example. (Not to mention since theres constantly new performances being done, there can be some variance in what sortof performances are required to get to whatever percentile.)

Plus theres a lot more that goes into grades than just kda/cs/gold/etc, so sometimes 'worse' performances at a glance might not actually be worse upon closer examination.

It can be frustrating at times though, particularly in games when you're snowballing and you feel you're sure you'd get an S, and then 1 careless death occurs and then you end up with an A+ or similar. Still, it basically just boils down to enough people having enough stompy games where they really did manage all you did and more, so you've really got to strive for good grades if you're on a popular champ/role combo.

none of you deserved an S in that game tbh

Well apparently Riot thinks WW did. Which basically just gets back to my point that the system is hard to understand and doesn't feel fair at times.

I don't believe 'Riot" thinks that, but I get your point. The system is definitely flawed

I'm gonna go with the idea that he took the most damage on your team, which I can only assume allowed your carries to get off their damage to kill at least parts of the enemy team, but that's only an assumption and I could be wrong. Be mindful that this isn't comparing you to him, it's comparing you to other top lane Aatroxes, and him to other jungle warwicks, so it's really difficult to tell just from a game what stats are being valued and such since I have no idea how other warwicks do on average, nor do I know how other Aatroxes do on average. KDA plays a part (which is why you can be an asshole support and go 20/3/14 to get an S, instead of playing a proper support), but other stats obviously go into it as I'm sure you're aware of.
