But Riot has been actively trying to make games so much shorter and one-sided that late game and full build is only rarely reached anymore.
So what's the point of making a champion who's gimmick is late-game if that phase barely exist anymore?
From what I can understand, the reason behind ornn's existence is to allow certain teams with heavy early game focus (namely ones with assassins) to essentially "have" a lategame, hence why black cleaver was one of the items given a buff. While I personally think he'll see few if any LCS play outside of support, that by no means makes him weak right now.
His gimmick is buying items anywhere. The extra items is icing on the cake.
He needs a buff tho.
Riot doesn't release/balance champions around the meta. Although you end up with some coincidences (Kindred released in the tank meta, when they had a passive ideal for killing tanks, for instance), and they'll balance champions that are overperforming in the meta (only if they're too strong in it, not too weak!), Riot's said their champion release team doesn't really pay attention to the meta.
And that's not his gimmick. His gimmick is buying things anywhere. This is just a little way for him to give his team an edge.
at some point games will be late game focused again
I wish ADCs would stop wasting 1000 gold for 30 AD before finishing their zeal item on my team.
I see games go late all the time so I have no idea where this "every game is a FF@20 stomp" idea comes from.

Ornn has like 3 gimmicks and that one is dead last in importance, generating interest, and fun.
They're not all for late game. For example, the IE upgrade gives 30 ad for only 1000 gold. That's very cost efficient and would be very helpful mid game.
i still get triggered when i see someone wasting 5k on trinity upgrade as a first item.
