My message to Riot and The League Community on Everything

Dear Riot (and the league of legends community) ,

By creating this post , I hope I am making a difference. I have seen many problems go unnoticed in our community and my hope is that this post can help gather as much of it together as possible. I hope to share them with you and others along with my personal views on all of it, so that maybe, just maybe we can see some changes.

With that said let's get down to it. (this will probably be a pretty long post --- Bear with me)

I started playing this game back in Season 3, a time when every decision mattered and you were free to play champions in your own way. No one was restricted to a META, no champion was specifically designed to be played in a specific lane. Rather, it was the players that defined the META. What we see and follow today is based on what our community found to work the best, one player top, one mid, one in the jungle , and two players bot. This was a time when our decisions determined the outcome of the game. Not only that --- to an extent , our decisions shaped League of Legend's Future.

Through the community , League of Legends quickly became one of top played games in the world. Through the community , certain playstyles were made popular! This of course, came around when players had a lot of freedom in how to play the game. I remember when you would see bizarre and interesting play styles, like AP Tristana, or ADC Ahri --- Playstyles that may have worked back in the day , but no longer work. Slowly, the META has begun to be enforced and restricted , punishing players that attempt to go out of the norms.

Today , Items and Strategy have a very small impact on the way games unfold --- most everything is determined by the Champion you pick. Pick the "wrong" champion and play them amazingly --- and you could maybe have a decent game, but you'd find that most of your games as said champion were losses. I see many people picking the "right" champions and playing them horribly --- and still winning the game with a carry.

Through the Seasons , League of Legends has slowly become dependent on who you pick (rather than how you play them). Champions should be balanced , like they used to be , so players are forced to strategize based on their matchup. Now-a-days, Champions of certain classes generally have the exact same builds as eachother, with little variation. Items should be more diversified and what champion you pick should have less of an impact on the outcome of the game.

Throughout Season 7 (and especially during this preseason) I , and many other players noticed that bot lane has a poor punishment system. Each Marksman will have similar builds. While this has been so since Season 5, it has been worse the past season. ADCs used to have to be protected by their team, but lately their survivability is insane -- many are able to 1v4 in only Mid-Game. They used to have large damage , and low durability. Now that they have both, every match is dependent on your bot lane. Its not balanced.

With the new Runes system, more balance has been introduced. A rune proc can bring a player down to half health in a second- a turret can be brought to half health with the Demolish rune. Many of the new changes have contributed to making the game scale way to fast, which leads to my final point --- the games no longer involve strategy. League has become a 5 v 5 Death Match with both teams throwing everything they have at eachother until minute 10:00. By that mark , the game is decided --- whoever fed the most before then loses.

I haven't seen an exception to this all Season. Objectives barely mean anything and Turrets are useless past the 10 minute mark (Rather 20:00 like it used to be). The game scales out of control extremely fast and the old Mid-Game has been replaced by the old Late-Game, with turrets being deleted as I mentioned before and kills being earned so quickly. Teams have to think and plan much less than they used to. So yea, the strategy is gone. As I saw in another post ---

> Riot has taken our chess, and given us checkers

Again, my hope in creating this post is that action will be taken. I hope that people see this and changes are finally made, for our community. Share your thoughts below because I want to know. I hope that League of Legends can soon be restored to what it used to be --- a game full of strategy, balance, and endless possibilities.

Thank you Riot.

Regards~

I miss long games. Where the shortest were towards the 30 minute mark, rather than 14 minutes being the "All of one side is gone and dead" that it is now. I missed being in a game where at 40 minutes everyone was team fighting but still making plans for a push or a defense. If the game went to 50 minutes, that was fine, as the game wasn't likely a stomp, and with each team being worn down and making plays to try and secure themselves another edge. It felt nice, and a loss didn't feel bad because you knew that both teams played well but one team just planned better.

Now the games rarely reach 30 minutes, with one team clearly winning but not sealing the deal because they have no reason to fear the enemy team coming back with equal force. If the ADC is fed, they won't die without two of your teammates going with them, and it's not easy to defend turrets when they don't deal nearly enough damage to force back a tank and damage dealers. I've had times where I've had a character walk under turret, hit me, take a turret shot, and just walk out for a second before repeating the same thing.

Riot and some of the playerbase just seem to not care about a game being long enough for a comeback. They seem to be pushing it so that the botlane who gets a kill decides the game. I wish it wasn't like that. I wish each lane mattered, and an odd, off meta build could work well. Personally I love taking odd characters into top lane, or as a support. Once dominated a game as Kled support. Felt good.

Dw boys, Rito just wants more money and a larger player base. Lol, just look at Zoe even a 8 year old could play that champ well. Say something shity in chat, get banned. Not allowed to get frustrated at their shity 'METAS'. Call someone out for anything, get reported. Lol somehow expected to maintain our composure when you been destroying a yas in lane and he comes back with pd, and frozen mallet or ie and game over for you. Anyway, rant.... Rant..... Rant...... They are not going to do anything sadly. JUST PLAY URGOT.

Ok, so as a player that's played ever since the start of season 2 let me give my side of the story:

First off, I agree with what you're saying, the players defined the meta. However, in professional play there was an established meta. BUT, this said meta never fully took off in solo queue because people valued fun over winning, and thus we had two different competitive atmospheres.

Furthermore, whenever balance was done it was for meaningful changes to occur, there was none of this "-5 AD" garbage that Riot is calling balance right now. Changes made were large and impactful.

In terms of champion reworks I heavily disagree with Riot's choices. Class updates were NEVER necessary and the whole concept of a class update is just chaotic and flawed. We've seen what they can be like, they're nothing but trouble. Reworks such as Warick, Galio and Yorick are fine as those are blatantly outdated champions. However, Riot is simply reworking champions left right and centre either because they want to keep the game fresh or they want to make champions more "healthy" (in the case of the assassin update). Riot ruins entire champions by reworking them, especially if they're reworking them with competitive viability in mind.

As for the lack of diversity in builds, what do you think happens when Riot removes entire items and constantly reworks items? We used to have Force of Nature and Morellonomicon used to be a situational item as opposed to a must-buy for mages. Now everyone builds similar items to every other champion in their class.

Games are more snowbally now because the community is now filled with ADHD teens who cannot stand long, thought-out games because they want to burn through all their mental fuel in one game and then queue for another game and repeat. Plus, for some reason people don't like longer games in the LCS, however I believe longer games is where you can truly see a team shine.

Until Riot sees a major loss economically and in playerbase numbers they will never consider putting the player first; over money.

unfortunately all of your hard work on a post that I completely agree with will almost be for nothing riot seems to be ok with this new 20 min average game speed

I never post. Ive been here since around s1...maybe 2. Ive seen all the 'reworks' all the butchering of fun champs theyve done. I'm one of 'those people'. I can no longer play summoners rift because you cant build non-meta and win...at all. I mean, I can but only if you manage to not get flamed, afk'd, reported, or trolled. Even if youre doing well. So I went to aram. I took my owning of every single rune and constantly varied up the gameplay....critplank. ad ziggs. ap on hit ashe. I mean the possibilities.

now? I cant even play ARAM because youve stripped even my runes from me. Its 'do this formula in this order' or else. I feel the same as the moment I learned in 'chess' that were a specific set of notated openings. All the magic was gone.

league has sold its soul. To the point where I redownloaded DOTA, and play DOTA2 and Heroes of the storm. I feel like while DOTA2 has a formulaic gameplay at least their items are more fun and varied. Heroes of the Storm has a lot of different and interesting ways to play heroes. You can run a merc camp build and if youre good enough make it work. Damage artanis etc etc all the while feeling iconic. No one can do the things Alarak does yet in the way he does. I dont ever go 'who killed me, and why'. In league I used to know. I used to feel outplayed. Now I just feel....outprepared.

Disclaimer: OP is bronze. The game has gotten more restrictive but to suggest that the game is completely determine but who you play rather than how you play, is only an indication or your own ignorance. You're not stuck in bronze because checkers replaced chess. You're stuck because you don't know how to move the pieces.
