10 Reasons Why Nerfs to Rylai's Crystal Scepter are Terrible

LordSirChipmunk··4 votes·1,197 views

Rylai's Crystal Scepter is great, and it shouldn't get any nerfs. Here are 10 reasons why.

  1. There are lots of solutions to countering it. Quicksilver Sash, picking Olaf, Cleanse, Mikael's Crucible, and avoiding carelessly jumping into an AP mid-laner's spells all are easy counters.
  2. Vladimir is already having some trouble due to past nerfs, and this would just hurt him more. We don't want to throw any champions down in the trash to Azir/old Yorick level.
  3. It's a very nice item for all AP mid-laners, adding a slow, lots of AP, and health.
  4. It's my favorite item.
  5. Rylai's fits a niche and unique role as a component of a mage's build; there isn't a single item like it exactly.
  6. If you nerf one item, a new one will just rise over it. We don't want every single champion running a Luden's Echo, another niche item for burst assasins, do we?
  7. It synchronizes very well with other items, like Liandry's Torment.
  8. It makes champions that don't have gap-closers way more viable, in an already mobility-dominant metagame.
  9. It's not as OP as most people actually think it is. Just because you lost lane to a couple of dudes running it a few times doesn't mean it's overpowered.
  10. The slow isn't as strong as other slows. Take Nasus's slow as an example, or even Kayle's slow.

Note: I am completely biased, if reason #4 didn't indicate it.

  1. Yeah sure, let me just QSS/Cleanse/Crucible that slow you'll reapply in half a second. Or rely on the chance of me picking 1 specific champion out of 132. Or you know, dodge that point-and-click spell.
  2. Champions can be reworked around the nerfs/power shifts to Rylai's.
  3. Obviously, given it has 400 health, 100 AP, and one of the strongest passives in the game. What's not to like about it?
  4. No one gives a shit.
  5. "Niche" my ass. And thank god there is no other items like this, except for Mallet, which shouldn't exist either.
  6. Luden's is hardly niche. And I'd far rather have Luden's than Rylai's. Your logic is horrible.
  7. Duh. So what? That's not a valid reason.
  8. Uh, yeah, it's called playing safe and smart and sticking with your team if you're a squishy mage. Not relying on bullshit.
  9. Yes, how incredibly explanatory. Thank you for all the detail and reasoning to back up your statement.
  10. So what? It has no cooldown between slows and procs slows on every single ability that actually affects enemies, and thus is far easier to reapply, nor does it decay.

No, how about we still nerf it and give all mages 0 survivability and trash morde.

Sure! Sounds cool to me.

Rylai's is NOT niche. A niche item is Abyssal Scepter, that offers stats and passives that are good and wanted by a few specific champions, but not useful enough to be an auto inclusion in every mage build. Rylai's is universally powerful and ANY mage enjoys and wants the slows and HP. There is nothing niche about it in its current state.

Furthermore, Quicksilver Sash, Cleanse, and Mikael's are NOT counters to the item. Something that clears slows and CC once is irrelevant if something can immediately reapply the CC after you got rid of it. And picking Olaf or Yi or Morgana for Black Shield are not viable options because it's very difficult for a single champion to counter a universally appealing mage item in every place it's used.

Rylai's needs to be utterly gutted.

1 : It's not worth to use any of those to cleanse a spammable slows . Neither does the cleanse . 2 : Why not ? 3 : Every mage's wet dream . 4 : Why am I not surprised ? 5 : It fills a niche that isn't a niche anymore but a must do . 6 : This is how the game works right ? The old gets older and the young gets stronger ? 7 : This combo is a pain in the ass for every tank player ... 8 : Only point where I agree . 9 : Unfortunately , there is almost everybody who builds it . 10 : The thing is , that those are only single target spells . Not AoE .

Fine, then. Instead of a single-target slow as an example, how 'bout an AoE stun?

who would use qqs vs a slow (that most likely gets reapplied 0.1 sec later)

none of these bar Olaf mean anything to anyone with targeted spells or DoTs

Vladimir is already having some trouble due to past nerfs, and this would just hurt him more. We don't want to throw any champions down in the trash to Azir/old Yorick level.

more like Vlad is one of many champs who we could give actual buffs to once Rylais stops holding them hostage. Aurelion Sol as well; if it wasn't so absolutely necessary for him to buy, we might be able to avoid seeing him nerfed every other patch.

It's a very nice item for all AP mid-laners, adding a slow, lots of AP, and health.

Right, you've identified the problem; a high-AP high-utility item that also gives you tank stats.

Rylai's fits a niche and unique role as a component of a mage's build; there isn't a single item like it exactly.

Rylai's is not a 'niche' item when it's a core item. Quite the opposite, actually.

If you nerf one item, a new one will just rise over it. We don't want every single champion running a Luden's Echo, another niche item for burst assasins, do we?

Yes, we do. I would be much happier if AP damage items didn't also make them harder to kill and impossible to catch.

It synchronizes very well with other items, like Liandry's Torment.

Nothing short of removing the item entirely would make it not synergize with Liandry's.

It makes champions that don't have gap-closers way more viable, in an already mobility-dominant metagame.

It makes melee champions without gap closers completely worthless and only enforces mobility dominance. Immobile mages were never struggling.

It's not as OP as most people actually think it is. Just because you lost lane to a couple of dudes running it a few times doesn't mean it's overpowered.

No, but because it's built on every AP in every game and makes me worthless unless I happen to have extreme mobility, I think I'll call it overpowered.

The slow isn't as strong as other slows. Take Nasus's slow as an example, or even Kayle's slow.

Why are you comparing it to spells? Wither is Nasus's only form of CC and he's balanced around having it. Rylai's adds a heavy slow to every spell and completely imbalances champions that are balanced around not having slows. Brand Syndra Cassiopeia Azir

LordSirChipmunk2 votes

About the champions at the end mentioned, Azir's trash, and both Syndra and Cassiopeia have slows... Also, all burst mages run a Rabadon's Deathcap and most run Morellonomicon, so why not nerf those, too?

As if QSS is a viable method of cleansing Rylai's slow.
