Where does Aatrox stand as a champion?

I just bought Aatrox but had played him in free week about week or two ago. I had only played him in jungle and I found he was good enough even though his sustain is surprisingly poor early game compared to a lot of the other champions since his spells drain his health pool.

He is strong enough as far as jungling goes but he has one of the worst laning phases I have ever seen in my life. His starting health is 538, which is disastrously low for someone who's only form of poke costs 5% of current health and is hard to land. He is awful at fighting since he can't win duels without his passive being popped and once it is then the enemy can just back off and recall. Then when Aatrox returns to lane he can't fight without his passive which has a 225 second cooldown meaning he is basically useless until it's back up. His sustain is very weak in duels until he get's a Spirit Visage or BORTK otherwise he is often crushed before he can get his three auto's out to heal himself unlike someone like Xin Zhao who has excellent dueling potential and a targeted slow and knockup. As for the alternate version of his Blood Price it is relatively useless until late game because he is better off with the sustain rather than the damage a lot of the time since he is so squishy. Now I know his ultimate and passive give him attack speed which allows him to proc his W more often which is awesome and all. But compare him to someone like Xin Zhao which basically has the same kit that he does except Xin Zhao is better in everyway.

Xin has a targeted slow, knockup, knockback, basic attack enhancer, armour penetration, 3 AA proc self heal( with possible buffs), AOE Ult with AD scaling . I don't see why I would ever want to pick Aatrox over Xin Zhao. If anyone can please explain to me how and why anyone would play Aatrox as a top laner or even a jungler.

Aatrox needs a rework to be less volatile and actually have a clear purpose.

Is he a fighter? carry? tank? Currently he does all 3 but badly.

If you buff him at all he will become dangerously OP again and need to be nerfed immediately. Buffing his base stats will just make him safe, which is not a good idea.

If anything, they could add blood well generation on his Ultimate. Anything else would potentially break him.

Gosh that picture proves that Aatrox's default helmet looks really stupid

Is it a helmet?

To answer your question: No, there isn't a reason to pick Aatrox unless you're in Bronze and know how to abuse him in certain match-ups. Past that, stay away.

I think just lowering the cast time on his Q would be a nice little buff for me. The wind up on it just makes it SO hard to get into a fight vs anything with a displacement.

The real problem is that his kit mechanically is OP, so they had to nerf the fuck out of him because of his kit mechanics alone.

Now he can't fulfill any of his roles meaningfully until he has 6 items, and even then there are champs doing what he does but better.

I really like Aatrox but he is in a bad place.

I'd honestly like to see him either get way better damage scaling on his E OR some form of tankiness while his ultimate is active.

He is currently a garbage elemental, for some reason Riot won't nerf the shit out of his revive passive and buff him elsewhere

I've never played him in the jungle, but I used to play him as a top lane bruiser and mid lane mage a lot

He's not a top-tier pick, but he's fun. He has poke, a ton of sustain, and some burst. He's not a bad duelist but he's incredibly item reliant.

I usually take Aatrox into top lane and start E, then get W, Q, and max E first. With E max Aatrox - like Sion, Lee, Shyvana - has hybrid damage and for Aatrox using spells actually has a benefit. Aatrox fills his blood well by spending life. The more full his blood well is, the faster he attacks.

Level 1 use your E to punish your lane opponent when they go to CS. Trade a few hits if you're confident. Once level 2 rolls in, use your active sustain to heal up and keep poking with E to lower or negate your opponent's sustain. If they don't have sustain you can just chunk them.

Depending on your opponent's damage, waveclear, and/or tankiness start with a Bork or Hydra. Hydra is great for enemies that have escapes as you can initiate with your Q or E, follow up, and then aa-hydra-aa for a large amount of burst. Coupled with your innate sustain and lifesteal you will be full health quickly. SV is excellent for everything Aatrox is: you get more heal, you get MR against jungle/top lane and mid lane damage, and you get more life so your spells fill your blood well faster. Bork pretty much must be built on Aatrox every game because it is one of - if not THE - best items for AA reliant champs. I personally try to get both Bork and Hydra in my games, then get Mercs, Randuin's, SV, and a situational.
