Even though the bonus armor penetration is almot useless against squishies (because of their low bonus armor) the Grievous Wounds are indeed very useful to cut their sustain. And this is not only against ADCs. Champions like Akali, Ahri, most melee carries (Tryndamere, Master Yi, etc) Kayle, are all examples of champions which are squishy and still have sustain.
Lord Dominiks on other hand is completely useless if the enemy is not tanky. Squishies tend to have a low HP pool. Even those that buy HP items, don't buy enough to make the passive extra damage matter.
But "muh more damage" - people think about this without thinking of the aforementioned possibilities.

Of course he gets tanky, that's a bruiser/juggernaut, 1 or 2 damage items, while the other are defense items, you could have used a better example than him, I see too many people mistaking him for a tank.

It's also useful on a lot of high damage AD top laners like riven and renekton who want a bit of tankiness but want damage as well (ESPECIALLY if the mid or jg can kill the backline reliably)

The same can be said from champion select actually! As soon as you figure out who you're against or even just see the full team, look at your summs for laning phase AND teamfights. Could they be better? Is ignite really going to pay off or would barrier be a better choice against that bursty Talon, Fizz, or Kat? Maybe even Cleanse, holy shit people there isn't only Flash, Ignite, Heal and Tele (and Smite, obv). You're meant to adapt your champion and play style to every single different composition. It's not the same shit every game. This is why ADC's cry every game with not a single resistance built against the currently super bursty mages (esp. with the removal of Aegis' aura, so I've heard.)

I went with a Hybrid build that game so I didn't get nomicon, granted I like Calling more because he doesn't need to be at 40% HP before taking its GW effect.

Now doing that is going to overcap your CDR, and even without going the full AS kayle, you still do need a little bit from tooth at least, which would put you at 30% without morello's or 10% extra with it. I'd rather fix that 10% with runes and grab luden's instead. Another thing to consider is Lichbane ap ratio was lowered, on top of Kayle's E ratio, meaning she does better relying more on base values by building more AS instead.

Champion Skin2 votes800 gold for 15 AD (worth around 525 gold) and reducing enemy healing by 40% on all physical damage (if the enemy has a lot of healing/regeneration/life steal it certainly can be well worth it)
and if you don't want it in your full 6 item build you can always sell it for 560 gold (only lose 240 gold which can be well worth it for the 15 AD and the powerful healing reduction you had in the meantime)

Yes, technically the enemy ADC will have an 800G advantage. EC is an investment though. By negating their supports entire ability to exist, you can harass and bully them entirely out of lane. The second you buy EC you have 800 less gold than the enemy ADC. But in killing them or denying them farm, you'll have much more. That's sorta the idea behind it. Your item removes Soraka from the game almost so the lane nearly becomes a 2v1. You trade 800G for a shitload of kill pressure.
Now, if you buy an EC and don't do anything with it? You are totally correct. You're better off buying a longsword. Why buy an item if you aren't going to use it? But the solution here is to use the item, not buy a longsword instead. Otherwise you give them the power to bully you out of lane. They might not, but they'd have the power to do so. Why risk it when you can do the reverse?

We lost the game because our Cait afkd in fountain complaining about game balance the rest of the time. Never bought , despite the fact that there were FOUR people on the enemy team that were using excessive healing. She already had 
so would have giga wrecked the enemy team in any team fight, but no, afk in fountain was apparently a better solution.

That 40% is also the sweet spot for sustain because it's easy enough to bring say, a Mundo down to 40% but then you still have to finish him this is where his sustain keeps him going, not with morellonomicon

DIRTY ASSHOLE1 votesI'm aware of how cost-efficient the item is, and the stats that it gives(turns out it's actually 35%, and not 40).
The issue is that it doesnt work well for champions that have sustain above 40%. Also, Mundo is a horrible example to go by, because he hasnt been meta for a long time(At least all of season 6, mostly because of the grievous wounds meta), and he pretty much never sees any playtime. (Pick ratio is 2.72% in the last month)
More meta champions like Swain and Vlad are unaffected though. The reason is because unless they drop down to 35%, their health pretty much stays capped, and they can win up to 1v3, unless their enemy is bursting them. If they are taking burst damage, then healing is irrelevant, because you cannot heal through burst damage.
Morellonomicon is mostly useful for champions that like to take Warlords Bloodlust in addition to their normal lifesteal items, like ADC's, possibly Illaoi, and jungle Graves especially.
