why do people start W on annie support

okay, i understand the whole LCS invade thing so having the stun up for a possible lvl 1 fight is really really good

BUT, in non lcs land where the invade doesn't happen 100% of the time, the stun isn't as useful. Most of the time, annie will go to lane with the stun still up.

Now... idk bout you, but if I'm laning with an annie support the last thing i want is an annie that all she can do is W once or hold W till we hit lvl 2, neither option sounds fun. They're also likely full hp/near full when we do hit lvl 2 if she went W first

Compared to what? Starting Q? Then she gives up the ability to come to lane with a stun, and has to harass or use it on minions to get the stun.

The possibility of a two person stun as soon as you get to lane can be a pretty big advantage, especially if she knows she can AA harass as well. If she's just holding onto her stun and not using W, and not harassing at all with AAs, she's probably not a good support or you guys were put in a pretty bad situation. It also gives the ADC some peel in any case there's a level 1 all in.

Don't play Annie, but starting W sounds a lot better than starting Q to me for a couple of reason.

really? I don't main annie support or anything, but she is one of my go to supports if thresh is taken (very limited support pool lmfao... :( ). Played her a bit when she was good a season or two ago.

Biggest turn off is lack of range/CD on her W.

I can understand that. I won't say it's horrible to start Q, there's just some advantages I personally love. Plus, if you can tell if your ADC is competent, you can easily push the wave and get an earlier level 2 if you start with W (hitting an enemy and minions at the same time). The downside to this is potential early ganks. W should also let you proc Spellthiefs more if you hit both targets.

I think the only time I'd start Q was if I was wary of a level 1 all in (Leona with Ignite), and that's just so I could poke a little better without the fear of her getting a stun off.

i get that, but in the short window where they're stunned, in reality you're putting out very little damage. it isn't often you'll do a significant chunk. You have a much higher overall threat if you just Q and auto imo. You can also get multiple stuns off by lvl 2 if you just Q on cooldown.

W: AoE, charge to stun. Q: stronger level 1, cheaper, lower CD, but next to no chance of stun before level 2.

Without CC, you'd be better off picking Ryze. She has strong magical damage, but you want that stun even more in a duo lane because there's actually an ally to help you trade with them, instead of nearly falling flat waiting on her level 1 Disintegrate cooldown.
