Yi needs to be looked at, and nerfed... big time

Shmeeve··8 votes·1,488 views

First off, Master Yi has been around for a long time since the initial release of league of legends, I enjoy this champion lore-wise and design-wise, however that doesn't stop the fact how broken he is in general, he has a passive that gives him 2 free auto attacks in one every 4th basic attack, a q that can give a fed yi a free quadrakill in a click of a button which leaves him invulnerable, a w that heals him while shielding him, and e that gives him bonus damage when not on cooldown and even MORE damage when activated, and an ult that makes him ignore slows and makes him catch up to you faster than jax spamming his q all the time. This champion NEEDS to be nerfed, I am tired of seeing him every game and destroying my team.

Incoming supposedly "diamond players" but when you check their match history, it's a smurf account and in reality they are from low gold screaming "JUST CC HIM YOU NOOB"

Eedat2 votes

......from a guy posting on a smurf account?

Lmao I keep getting banned because I'm edgy. Haven't played any ranked for 4 seasons, highest I've been was d1 but I know a lot about the game, just not playing it for real

Eedat2 votes

.......so you're complaining about people claiming to be diamond on smurf accounts.......... while claiming to be diamond on a smurf account

If you cs better you can kill him easier

He isn't weak, he can be cc'd to oblivion yea, but by the fact he can ignore slows with his ult and be untargettable during his q makes that a little more difficult.

Yi needs to be looked at, and nerfed

No, he doesnt

You're just salty you lost to one

Shmeeve3 votes

eh I am salty i lose to him all the time, and every yi I find ends up getting fed without even trying... that or I have VERY bad luck when there is a yi on the enemy team

See, this shit is why people have a hard time respecting Gameplay.

Yi is indeed an annoying piece of shit to play against, but...well ..

Almost irrelevant to the conversation. I guess you're trying to avoid accusations of bias? Anyway, I guess I can't really fault you for trying to provide some background.

[{quoted}](name=Lord Apex,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=m4EFKE1A,comment-id=,timestamp=2018-07-27T19:57:29.324+0000) he has a passive that gives him 2 free auto attacks in one every 4th basic attack,

You just described what one of his abilities does. Why is this a problem? Is it a problem? What makes it more of a problem than Shyv Q, that can give you four on-hits almost immediately with no setup, or Lucian passive which also crits like Yi's, gives the on-hits, and is available on-demand on a ranged adc?

[{quoted}](name=Lord Apex,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=m4EFKE1A,comment-id=,timestamp=2018-07-27T19:57:29.324+0000) a q that can give a fed yi a free quadrakill in a click of a button which leaves him invulnerable,

Ok so along with being intentionally vague hyperbole (what's "Fed"? How ahead does he have to be to do this (very). When did you last see Yi get a quadra with just one Q? Was the whole enemy team already low hp or what? Also, his Q makes him untargetable, not invulnerable.

[{quoted}](name=Lord Apex,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=m4EFKE1A,comment-id=,timestamp=2018-07-27T19:57:29.324+0000) a w that heals him while shielding him,

So not only is this just a very brief description of his ability with no details about why it's a problem, it's also just wrong. W doesn't shield, it provides a pretty hefty amount of damage reduction as well as suspending his passive, e and R buff durations - at the cost of making him channel the whole time, leaving him vulnerable to cc. It also can function as an auto reset, weirdly enough.

[{quoted}](name=Lord Apex,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=m4EFKE1A,comment-id=,timestamp=2018-07-27T19:57:29.324+0000) and e that gives him bonus damage when not on cooldown and even MORE damage when activated,

Again, just the description. I like how you wrote the word "more" in all caps though, it really helps me understand why the ability's a problem - it's such bullshit that you can activate a passive ability to get greater value from it for a limited duration at the cost of losing the passive bonus while it's on cooldown.

[{quoted}](name=Lord Apex,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=m4EFKE1A,comment-id=,timestamp=2018-07-27T19:57:29.324+0000) and an ult that makes him ignore slows and makes him catch up to you faster than jax spamming his q all the time.

At least this has a little substance, though the comparison is... actually pretty funny. Well done, this made me laugh.

Oh well here you have it. Lord Apex deigned to come done from on high and leave us with his wisdom "I am tired of losing to You, and as such, he simply must be nerfed. Make it so."

Who am I to argue with royalty? Who is anyone? Make it so indeed.

Tl;Dr You're bad but your post was even worse.

Shmeeve1 votes

sorry for my lack of understanding the w and by the fact he can somehow die in the middle of his q (somehow?), even though this post was cringey as heck, and its not just me losing to him all the time, sometimes I can fight him just fine, but by the fact he starts stomping everyone late game is a problem, no matter how fed he is.

p.s. I know I am bad at the game too

Shmeeve1 votes

Also forgot to add about the instant quadra thing... that happened in two different matches it was tormenting

FrockSaints1 votes

The way you're complaining just shows a lack of understanding on how to play against him and overall how he functions, which is being exacerbated by the fact that you just got stomped super hard.

Now, I agree with you that Yi is pretty broken, but in the current state of the game, he's not overpowered. That is to say in some situations he feels overpowered and in some situations he feels useless, and it kind of evens out. That is the meaning of broken and doesn't mean the champion need nerfs. I would wish for him to be less broken, but that would require either a rework or actually fixing up the game. Both take quite some work.

He's also a pubstomper, which can be a problem in low elo, because even if you know how to deal with him, if your team just feeds him, he's still going to become a problem, because your team doesn't know how to deal with him.

Regardless, if you want to talk about how to deal with him, I can discuss that with you. I'm an ex (and soon to be again) diamond Yi main btw.

Shmeeve2 votes

aight, might need that knowledge.

FrockSaints1 votes

Alright. First thing you need to know is he's a very strong duelist, so you shouldn't try to 1v1 him unless you know you can.

He only has Q as a gap closer, and it's also what allows him to dodge stuff. If he Q's into the fight you should CC and burst him the moment he comes out of Q. You can see where he'll land by the animation, so you can send a skillshot to where he'll land and he can't dodge it.

His ult only lasts 7 seconds, and he's usually quite weak without it, so wasting his time is super good. Save your gap closer (if you have one) for after he Q's on you. A lot of people make the mistake of gap closing while he's in Q, and often that puts him in a good position. Learn to time it right. Zhonya's Hourglass and Guardian Angel are items he hates playing against. A lot of people think "oh it's Yi, I'll just build thornmail". He'll still melt you with his true dmg, and the return dmg isn't that high now. Those 2 items are what he really hates, as they just waste his ultimate, while also making you a bit tankier against him. He also hates champions that can waste his time well, like Vladimir and Kha'Zix, though you certainly don't need to pick specific champions to counter him. Knockbacks are particularly strong against him. If he Q's in and you just knock him back and run, he probably won't be able to catch you.

In teamfights, don't let him go unnoticed. Master Yi has a lot of dmg but inherent weaknesses. If you let him go unnoticed, he will mow through your team, but if you focus him properly, unless he waited for the right time to go in, he should be quite useless. Most low elo Yi's will just rambo, so that shouldn't be a problem. Fed Yi's especially should be particularly easy to deal with. What you do is you bait. You put your juicy adc alone in a lane, overextending, and hide the team nearby. The moment he jumps on the adc the team shows up and destroys him. You can then try to take an objective while he's dead. Most fed Yi's will try as hard as they can to throw. They think they're the best and will want to try to 1v5. If you understand this, you can counter it by baiting him.

Understand what kind of teamfights he strives in: A lot of people think Yi is just a 1v5 champion that's overpowered and whatnot, but that's not quite true. Yi is very strong in certain teamfights and quite weak in others. Particularly, if you group up, he has a hard time. But don't clump up. If the enemy team has something like a Malphite, or an Annie, that's certain death. Just be near each other so you can quickly burst him down. Obviously, he's really good at cleaning up fights, but he also really likes fights where they go at him 1 by 1. This happens a lot when splitpushing against an uncoordinated team. They'll go try to defend and make the mistake of going 1 by 1. If he has rageblade, this is very very bad. He'll most likely just kill you 1 by 1 if he's good. Show up together and if he goes on someone, CC+burst+gap close away if needed and just take him down before he can even do anything. That's the thing with Yi. You have to act right away against him. If you let him get a few autos off, congratulations, he's just killed someone, and has his Q back. Depending on his build, he might be able to get his Q back somewhat quickly without even needing a kill, so don't allow that. Stop him right in his tracks.

Vision is important. Yi can snowball quite easily if given the chance. You need vision around the map to know when to back off so you can avoid feeding him. Keep in mind he's a good towerdiver, because he can kill you fast, before turret warms up, and drop aggro with Q. Later on, a lot of people will see Yi pushing in a solo lane and go defend alone, thinking they're safe under tower. This is often a mistake, especially if he has rageblade. He'll just towerdive you! Unless you have ways to waste his time under tower, or your champion can deal with him with the help of the tower, you shouldn't try that. Something you can try is sending 2 guys but hiding the second guy in the back. Once he towerdives, the second guy shows up and you kill him. Another thing to keep in mind is he'll have a harder time surviving a towerdive if you have no minions nearby, as after he kills you, he just needs to auto minions or the tower and Q a minion, but without minions he can't do that. Then again this probably doesn't apply to Yi's in your elo.

If you're looking to fight him early game, pay attention to his E. You can tell by the glow on his sword. He's quite strong if he has it up, so again, just try to waste his time until it's gone and then go for the fight. A lot of bad Yi's will activate E a lot sooner than they actually attack, so this shouldn't be too hard in most cases. Keep in mind he's not as weak early game as people think. In fact, I like to invade at level 2 as Yi and it often ends up in a kill for me.

If you've got questions, ask away.
