NEW MASTERY HYPOCRISY! @WHOEVER! Like it matters...

REMOVED

Oppressor

Champions either have crowd control abilities or they don’t, making Oppressor a pretty ‘yes or no’ mastery. How you play your champion makes little difference when the only question is whether you can do something or not, so we’re removing Oppressor in favor of something more flexible.

NEW

Courage of the Colossus

Giving initiators a survivability tool in the moment they need it most: diving into the enemy team.

Gain a shield for 7% (+7% for each nearby enemy champion) of your maximum health for 4 seconds after hitting an enemy champion with hard crowd control (30 second cooldown)

As with all our pre-season changes, masteries are subject to change while we continue testing on the PBE. Let us know what you think!

I THINK THAT YOUR FANTASIES WILL NEVER BE QUENCHED!

But seriously do you not see what you did here?

You took away a binary choice and added another binary choice.

That's different. The strength of CotC depends on how you use it. There is a cooldown and you need to maximize the shield. Oppressor was just "I have CC therefore I get more damage". There was no active interaction.

Depending on how "nearby" nearby champions is then it isn't very hard to maximize the value of the shield when someone like Malphite can ult in the middle of the enemy team and only hit one person and still potentially get a full shield for 45% max health if you want to throw his passive into the mix (35%+10%).

In the same vein, Thresh landing a hook and going in will give him very small shield. Not sure how Riot will balance this.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Depends on the center point of CC. If it is based on YOU what defines a nearby champion then everyone with a ranged CC gets super small shields. On the other hand, if it is based on the victim of CC then they get the same size shield as someone like Malphite (the Champions this really affects is hook based champions and people like Sej/Amumu who initiate with a ranged ability).

50000000000000001 votes

That sounds like a good way to balance it, and gives a pretty good room for counterplay.

Kynami1 votes

I'd be careful about that... ranged hard CC that allows initiations also includes stuff like Ivern, Morgana, and Swain. If its based at point of impact some of them will get to do some very crazy stuff.

It's not binary, because you chose Colossus over Grasp and Bond of Stones. Bond of Stones vs Colossus in particular is a compelling choice for a lot of Tanks that have hard CC and want to take aggro from their carries. Whereas Oppressor versus Bounty Hunter was pretty much: do I have CC and will get assists or do I have damage and will get kills?

SpecterVonBaren8 votes

Why is he being downvoted? The man is right.

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

Except on champions with big teamfight CC or CC in general they would much rather take the potential 35% max health shield over a little bit of DR or situational healing. While Bond and Grasp are SLIGHTLY better in lane, a champion like Malphite would simply be making the wrong decision by not taking colossus. It's not a real choice, but the illusion of one because 99% of the time it is the best option on every tank.

Glory ln Death2 votes

It really isn't the "wrong choice", though. Yes, you can get a huge shield potentially. However, the shield only lasts 4 seconds, and has a 30 second cooldown - in extended fights or vs a poke/siege comp the shield isn't as useful as the other two.

It also depends on your playstyle - what if you prefer to play more as a Warden than a vanguard? Bond of Stone is probably a better choice for you.

There's a lot more to this mastery than just "Do I have hard CC? Better take it!"

50000000000000001 votes

Well, some champions definitely synergize better with some keystones than others. Soraka could take deathfire if she wants to be aggro in lane and poke, but it'd be pretty bad to take DFT over Windspeaker's. And it's not like she has other decent keystones. Grasp for sustain is the next best thing, I guess?

Critmaster Garen12 votes

the funny thing is, that its not even true. everyone can itemize into crowd control to trigger opressor, while CoC really only triggers on hard cc and helps a handful of champions.

Keystones are all binary choices. What they did was remove a binary choice from the early masteries.

Rip Mordekaiser He could run SotA and even oppressor due to Rylais slows.

So what now? DFT or Grasp? Stormraider's?

Malicious Metal3 votes

Will probably depend on the enemy team comp but either Grasp for the 18 points in resolve or Stormraiders if they're really kite-reliant

How is it binary? You have two other masteries to choose from, and the ones who go this deep in resolve usually have hard cc, or use for Grasp

Grasp has been nerfed to crap.

Surr20plz4 votes

It's binary as to whether they have CC or don't just like Opressor.

If have CC? Colossus!

if not? Then you make a choice.

Chembaron Yamada4 votes

Not really, it isn't that much of "if I have hard CC, I take it". If I am going to play Trundle for example, I will go for grasp, even if I have hard CC in form of ice pillar in my kit. Grasp and BoS are giving you other benefits. Grasp gives you more damage and a bit sustain (good for juggernauts for example), BoS gives you permanent damage reduction and you reduce the damage an ally is taking too. CotC meanwhile gives you a shield, it gives you additional strength with a time window. Mostly good for divers and initiators.

Oppressor and Bounty Hunter give the same benefit: additional damage. So Oppressor was the better option if you had soft CC, because it guaranteed you additional damage. Bounty hunter meanwhile gives more.... if you at least kill 3 of the enemy champions.

These cases are totally different, dude.

Odinakos1 votes

Also its a point of laning vs teamfight advandage. CotC has a pretty large window of opportunity for enemies to play around in lane, Grasp is way more reliable for consistent advandage. In teamfights, the extra damage and minimal sustain for the tank is meh compared to a possible massive shield that can turn teamfights around.

So Grasp seems better in teamfights than laning and vice versa for grasp. That would lead to some interesting choises for top tanks.

Its a stun, supress and a displacement.

Every CC effect that makes you completely lose control over movement of your champion is hard CC.

TeCoolMage1 votes

Champions going down the defense tree are expected to have CC in most cases and will have to choose between the 3 masteries.

Champions that have no reliable CC tend to go down the utility or offense tree

Not at all, you still have undying grasp to choose from if you want sustain/more damage

Boop Daddy 1 votes

At least with Oppressor, you could build Rylai or FM and suddenly you could use it.

Not only did they replace it with another binary choice, they made it even more situational.

GG Rito you can fix problems right

IDK, CotC could be used by divers in general. Lee sin can dive far more efficiently at level 6 with this.

woop lee buffs!
