Sometimes it's so exaggerated you'd think they're talking about Zilean or something.
She's not in tip top shape, but to be honest, what support is? That role needs a rework and I doubt we'll see that anytime soon.
A Sona rework would be nice so her skills are more interactive.

Truth to be told, damage oriented supports are a lot stronger that people perceive them to be. I can throw a lantern with thresh, and hope my jungler/adc understand what needs to be done or when to pick it, OR i can pick Lux, Zyra, Sona and wreck teamfights with powerful damage abilities and CC until 30 minutes. Even after that point if they are fed.

Nobody11111 votesHonestly, as a support (leona) main I consider sona to be one of the weakest supports, generally when I see sona in queue I consider it a free win for me. there's maybe one support that I consider weaker, and its because I never lost to a taric support. if she's balanced, she is currently balanced around being weak, and by being too well rounded she doesn't do enough of anything.

MavenSong1 votesAs much as I dislike how you put it, I agree, she doesnt need buffs... well not huge ones if that. She needs tweaks... I love sona, but as she is now it seems shes too... weird to balance. She is at a huge high in teamfights, but not anything great in lane. She has a lot of utility... but each does seemingly little as a result of it, which is why people want buffs.
Glamor1 votesI think the ult needs a buff. Sona's moves except Q are enhances. Anyways, the ult needs buff because for an example, Ashe is supp too. Her ult WAY more stun time then Sona's ult. Maybe she really needs a buff.
