Why is it that champs like garen/darius/illaoi etc. get tankier faster than real tanks? (naut, mao)

I can see their healthbars having more lines than mine

Because their first item is generally health-heavy, while tanks go a more armor-based route.

Just because they're getting more health doesn't mean they're tankier than you, though.

Laughs in armor-neutralizing items/runes

They still think resistances are stats.

Only one that i can see doing that is Garen because of his W's passive.

what does it matter, when they still win in trades against him?

ornn, nautilus, shen. most top lane tanks just straight up dump on you early on and you have to play under turret until you completed at least one item. usually it takes two items until you can start beating them in trades.

and garens w passive needs time to ramp up too. 150 minions. so i wouldnt say he gets tankier faster.

His w active when used well certainly makes him a lot tankier.

for a moment. its also part of the reason why he cant take sustained fights.

outside of grasp he has no way to regain health during a fight like Darius does for example

so while most fighters can theoretically go on forever by lifestealing off their opponent and minions, garen just slows down his death. thats why if one ability in his kit needs a rework, its garens passive. it needs to be more versatile and have ways to sustain him in and out of combat.

Poor naming choices. The main role of champions we call tanks is to cc.

They don't. They simply have sustain.

Because riot hate tanks

Because every one of them that you mention is a member of the Juggernaut subclass of Fighters.

They are described as follows:

"Juggernauts are melee titans who relentlessly march down the opposition and devastate those foolish enough to get within their grasp. They are the only subclass who excel at both dealing and taking significant amounts of damage, but in turn they have a tough time closing in on targets due to their low range and extremely limited mobility."

In addition to having relatively good Armor and Magic Resist, they have built-in sustain via in-combat heals, increased regeneration or shields, as the case may be with the champion themselves. Many build Armor and MR items as well, making them pretty close to Tanks in durability, but as stated above, they are extremely slow, and they have less CC than Tanks do.
