Matchmaking (fixing broken gameplay)
Today I may be slightly more tilted than normal. I have spent the past 6 hours trying to climb and instead fell 50 lp...it's one of those days where I understand why more and more people are uninstalling league. But let me take you on a journey of how those 6 hours played out.
I love playing adc. It's really the only thing I find interesting about the game and so I would call myself an "adc main". However, being in plat 5 (it was just plat 3 a week ago), I noticed that I have a 50% of getting a support, and 50% of getting a "me want to do damage and carrying" support. So the day starts off with a fiddlesticks support and of course we lose cause they have a lulu.
So I decide to switch to support because I want to give other adc the chance to play with actual support champions. Unluckily I won every other game because sometimes you get the fed annie (seriously two of my games were carried by this champ) and sometimes you don't. What I hated about it though was I felt I had no control over the situation. It really felt it depended on what teammates you get and who can 1 v 9 the game.
Obviously this 1 v 9 mentality isn't true in pro play (which I believe where a lot of buffs and nerfs go for), but in solo queue it seems like that is the hope. I even remember a buff for alkali awhile back noted that when she got ahead she wasn't able to "close games out fast enough". This 1 v 9 style of gameplay/meta we seem to be in is very frustrating as if you are not the 1 (s/o to neo) and you have the first time ranked lvl 30 jhin in your plat game (this actually happened), why bother playing.
So if this is a meta of luck, what really is the point of trying to climb or placements. Is it just, who is better at getting lucky climbs?
