A 2.5 Instant-cast AOE Stun is Complete BS

It's not like the stun was necessary or anything.

Sure the stun was necessary but it lacked counterplay. Wanna know what the counter play to both his Q, W and R? Don't get stunned. What was the counterplay to stun if he summoned it right on ya? None

item 3140

You know, like everyone else says you can completely negate Zed with a item 3157.

Yes and deal no damage for 20 minutes

A Superb Villain54 votes

If it takes you 20 minutes to farm for a damage item, I don't think your problem was a lack of counterplay.

LoLKiru7 votes

While I agree with the sentiment, buying items isn't exactly the best way to work with that (its the same reason Malzahar lacks counterplay; or old Xerath, once they have enough damage to kill you, you have no choice but to NEVER walk near them unless you have a very specific item or cleanse in the case of stuns; and even then, the person using them can simply move down the list to the next team member who doesn't have that item)

All 3 of these champions had (and still do have) exploitable flaws, most notably that all 3 have no mobility but even as someone who plays 2 of those 3 champions (Xerath and Malzahar, Malzahar who I actually main) there is very little you can do to them, it makes them similar to DotA heroes honestly.

While the other poster is exaggerating that you would delay your build by 20 minutes, you would certainly delay it somewhat.

Don't get me wrong, counter building is fine; I'm not sure if you should be forced to buy very specific things though to counter champions (again, A-la DotA)

Just to clarify: I'm not okay at all with Veigar becoming worthless; he should remain a strong option. His E just needs counterplay of some sort (personally; I'd just add an AoE slow to the inside of the cage, so even if he can't stun you he can still land W fairly easily)

MohawkBird1 votes

That's a perfect idea. If veigar puts the cage around you, you get slowed but you can still walk out. If you are facing a veigar who knows what he's doing and puts the cage on you, he should be rewarded with a stun. But not have a gigantic AoE trap that requires little skill that has little counterplay on top of the potential ability to stun an entire team.

Chessburger9 votes

To be perfectly honest you needed to land E on the edge for immediate stun if you were agressing on somebody. Just getting him in a cage does nothing when the person can retaliate and 1 shot you back or cc you. It only worked if you didn't hit the person on the edge if a) you were too ahead for them to fight back, b) they're bad and don't realize the position they're in, c) you're running away and hope people don't blink over the edges once in.

People pretend like his E was that easy to hit on the edge against an aware opponent and people forget that unless they're playing wrong for veig to somehow be miles ahead of them, if veig didnt insta stun, you kind of danced around outside of his other spell ranges (with the preposition you had something to threathen him back if he got in range of it) and easily avoid the huge delay W and agressed back. So much lacking of counterplay, much wow.

It's not like he points and clicks you for suppression that you basically need cleanse for. Awareness of ranges and baiting important spells out is still counter play in my book.

EDIT:

I can see why people would be confused let's take an old school s1 version of a matchup (which didn't happen because veigar was considered bad due to his pathetic laning): brand vs veigar, 2 immobile mages. Now the matchup would go that veig would basically have to be some sort of a dance magician to not get poked out of lane pre 6 (he still would unless the brand was really bad). And let's a assume veig wants to stun him at 6 (wouldn't kill him from 100% either way, not enough burst). He gets in the very real situation of brand moving unpredictably and ends up getting brand in the cage but not stunned. Now he W's and tries to get in range for Q R. Brand's W Q massively outrange the veig so he can easily side step the W because of its delay and threathens veig by having his W Q up. If veig tries to come in for a R Q brand will not die (To be honest if done properly veigar would get combo stunned before he could click R or Q) from it not even close and veig will eat the stun in his face because of the cast animation making him stand still. By this time the cage is gone and brand is free to fully agress on him and possibly kill him or at least force a flash.

It'd always be a different match up with different champions but you get the general idea of what a threat that prevents him from moving into R Q range without stunning immediatly means.

EDIT 2: but these are skill nuanced situations you can't expect people to even think of. Because you're not forced to think, you can just cry that something's bullshit without even trying. Works every time, but at the price of people staying at the same elo.

Items aren't counterplay, and even if we pretend it is, it's reaaaaaaally retarded counterplay. Forcing opponents to build an item or get raped every single time is not good gameplay. His E was so good it could have been an ultimate, I'm surprised it took so long for it to get nerfs.

Items ARE counterplay, its just league items dont have actives except for like 2 of them and everyone wants them nerfed or removed. If you want real counterplay go play liek heroes of the storm or something where everything is just abilities

Narasimha19 votes

Uhh... No

Counterplay is what ACTIONS you can take in a situation. Literally "What play can you make to counter it?" You're referring to counterbuild, or "What can I build to counter my opponent?"

Kuroi864 votes

It's a form of counter play, but hardly the best form. There are many aspects to it. Counter building is an aspect of counter play, but it's probably one of the worst ways to try and counter someone as it is likely going to put you behind.
Unless your core item and what you always rush is a Zhonya's, then counter building as counter play is a bad idea. Same with any item.

Digitality1 votes

No, he's right. They're separate concepts that fall under a similar typing. However, one happens on the tactical level, and the other on the strategic level.

Duke Anax1 votes

Wouldn't that fall more under the logistic level?

Digitality1 votes

Yes, more specifically it would. Though it's rarely used as gaming terminology. Logistics would directly cover build orientation, while strategy would be the blanket grouping for all planning and execution of plans.

In gaming parlance the strategic layer is generally meant to cover all other planning not on the tactical level which itself is considered direct execution.

OK thats my bad I guess. Still if you can counterbuild why do we need counterplay if it achieves the same goal: it can be countered? Im just saying in general. Riots policy of counterplay is really never going to work, not with over 100 champs that all need to somehow counterplay each other. This philosophy is also what is probably causing every new champ to have EVERYTHING in their kit so they can counterplay EVERYTHING in all the other champions kits.

I agree making Veigar's stun not instant is healthier in the long term for the champ, its just that the argument that it lacks counterplay is not a good argument for it. The reason it needed to be nerfed was because it was holding veigar back because it was too powerful so nothing else in veigar's kit could be changed or buffed so he would always be a subpar champ with all the mobility around. Now that its been nerfed, veigar obviously needs to get those other changes to compensate.

So why every Ap mid is gonna build item 3157 against zed? yeah, you can totally win without it (Kilograms of sarcasm here)

His E was so good it could have been an ultimate, I'm surprised it took so long for it to get nerfs.

The lack of delay was the main thing distinguishing it from Leona and Braum ultimates, for example. As in, the actual ultimates have delays and Veigar NON ultimate aoe stun didn't.

Plus, of course, the new mechanic is almost identical to Thresh ult (except for being an actual stun instead of a slow). Which, you know, nobody gets hit by ever, making him a totally useless champion that would never be picked, amirite?

(And before you point out that all those are supports: supports are supposed to have BETTER utility than other classes because they have such crappy damage. Veigar had better-than-support CC and massive damage. Now he just has massive damage.)

Sona Ping3 votes

"Plus, of course, the new mechanic is almost identical to Thresh ult (except for being an actual stun instead of a slow)." From a mechanic perspective this is not accurate.

Thresh's ult is an ability that is used primarily after an engage has occurred. In it's usual use, he engages and damages an opponent with Q, moves to them and then uses The Box which with 99% slow for two seconds is actually a root for all purposes (except a few ability interactions). Then the ADC moves in and acts as consistent damage to the target. You see the difference? Of course the ult will hit. In most of the scenarios in which the ult is used, Thresh has leapt to the target making it certain they'll be enclosed and hit by the wall moving away and taking damage from it (another difference, by the way) and if they stand still they'll just by Flay'ed into the wall anyway. Also, the ADC would soon be attacking them, making this comparison even more inaccurate in the real world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Veigar's E's use is entirely different from The Box. While Thresh has it as an additional powerful tool to his kit, Veigar is a squishy, immobile champ whose E has to perform as his only defense, engagement tool and escape simultaneously and is required to even use his W. Further, there is no consistent damage in a Veigar lane, only having brief windows where he can do damage in. Having times where a champion would pose no threat of retaliation provides a great opportunity that presents a significant danger to said champion, which is why Veigar has immediate use of his only defense.

These two abilities are enormously different in their mechanics; This analogy cannot be leveled.

Raid Boss Morde2 votes

It's kind of funny how strong is E was and still is. Think about him and then Thresh. See any similarities between one of their skills? Yeah, Veigar's E and Thresh's R. Veigar's E seems a lot bigger, STUNS everyone who touches it, and was instant, on a somewhat low CD. Thresh's SLOWS, the walls break (a teammate behind the first one to hit the wall won't be slowed), it is not instant, and it's on a high CD for being an ULTIMATE, not a basic skill. I guess some may say it's balanced because Veigar's E deals no damage, and Thresh's does, but the damage Thresh's Ultimate deals is very minuscule.

tl;dr: Veigar has a better version of a Thresh ultimate on a basic ability on a much shorter CD. These nerfs to Veigar were acceptable.

bla bla bla bla thres ults dmg

Magic Damage: 250 / 400 / 550 (+ 100% AP)

thresh has 1 stun and and aoe airborne

thresh also has dark passage (W) and this steriod on his E Magic Damage: Damnation.png Souls + up to 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 / 200% AD.

He can also get almost "infinite ap" from his pasive , and he gets armor too.

Ur comparison of 1 skill to the other leaves a lot of details aside the favor thresh.

We aren't talking about the rest of their kits, I'm just comparing those two skills. Veigar's is much more superior. Low CD AoE stun, as opposed to High CD AoE Slow.

The counterplay was your teammates that were right there to beat up on the guy. You know, those 4 other people you queued up with?

It's worth mentioning that this instant stun was one of the few counterplays to League of Mobility. With it gone, mobile champions have absolutely nothing to fear of Veigar, and no reason not to dive him. The scales are tipped even further in the mobile champions favor.

It Is I Emoto14 votes

It'll get a delay and a warning zone, though a 0.75 second delay is quite alot of time to react maybe a bit too much for my taste

Chogath Has been making due with a 1.5 second delay on his Q and a kit that completely relies on landing that one skill for 5 seasons now, you're gonna be FINE.

A Superb Villain6 votes

Except Veigar cannot build tanky without sacrificing his sole purpose as a burst mage. Cho'Gath typically builds defensive items, so even if his Rupture misses it is not a death sentence. If Veigar fails to land his only form of crowd-control he has no way of stopping someone from leaving him as a purple smear on the floor besides praying they are dumb enough to face-tank his full combo, and that is only if he has built up enough AP to burst them in one rotation.

How about you guys just to just grow up and accept the fact that the stun actually had NO counterplay at all.

I know its hip and popular to hate on every single thing riot does but atleast you should accept the things that no objective person would argue about.

Nucleophilic atk8 votes

There were plenty of items that countered the stun lol. Veigar was perfectly balanced before they nerfed every one of his abilities.

I didn't play much Veigar, so I am rather objective.

Stephenizgod7 votes

You know whats funny? I see people say "Omg there is counterplay to the stun its QSS!" and yet those same people will say "OMG you are forced into buying Zhonya's against Zed! NOT FAIR"

Bottom line is Items are not healthy counter-play, its cheap and lazy counter-play. Take Armor and Last Whisper. Last Whisper counters Armor more then Armor counters AD. One item countering ALL your armor is not a fun experience for the one building Armor, what makes it worse is that the person building Last Whisper was not doing it to counter you. They were building it because it spikes their damage overall to everything. See how item counterplay is not healthy? If AD champs cant hurt Tanks its no fun, so we have LW, but now AD champs hurt Tank too much and its no fun...

Oh sorry i forgot to comment on your post lol... I wanted to say that i agree the changes to Veigars stun are probably not a healthy change but i cant say for sure, im waitin for the PBE to work so i can try it for myself. If you would like i can come back and post my experience with it, i also plan to test Mordekaiser.

A Superb Villain3 votes

Would you kindly? I do not have access to the PBE, so any hands-on investigation would be deeply appreciated.

Stephenizgod6 votes

Mkay... So Mordes rework isnt working.

Veigar was interesting... The Q was annoying because it took me awhile to get use to the fact it wasnt a skill shot anymore, but once i did get use to it i started farming fairly easily. It was so easy to line up 2 minions, probably 90% of my Q's killed 2 minions. Once i got to using it more i started poking my enemy while farming minions at the same time, this was really fun. The stun is so much better now in my opinion, instead of instant stun or risk missing them, this seems to cause a panic and allows you a pretty much guaranteed W or they flash. I was able to deal damage at the same time as force them into the stun so i deal even more damage. Now this might just be because i main Malz mid but the delay didnt effect me at all, i was able to hit them quite easily, yet again this might be because im use to delay skill shot CC.

Now onto what i thought was bad about it. The Q, while easy to farm two minions at the same time, also pushed the lane hard which made it annoying. The hit box is hard to line up, sometimes it hits minions i didnt think it would hit and sometimes it would miss entirely. The fact that its a skill shot forces Veigar into positions a squishy mage does not want to be in, at a certain point i was forced into either taking damage to farm my Q or just AA the minion. Most of the time i got by this by hitting through other minions, but yet again this pushed the wave and caused me to miss a lot of minions in the end. The stun while i think is fun, it was an issue trying to stun more then 1 person. I could trap one person but anyone else would most likely get away as i couldnt corral more then one person into the stun. Also with the delay people with gap closer were able to jump right to me before it could stun them, which got slightly annoying. It was hard to hit my Q on anyone with a dash, it moves medium-fast and anyone with decent reaction time would be able to dodge it, unless i used it through minions.

Main issues i can see is the Q forcing lil squishy Veigar into bad positions in order to farm it, sometimes a minion in the back line is almost dead and all minions in front are full life and there is no way to hit that minion without going out of safety. The stun while i think is fine for hitting 1 person, does not work so well against multiple people with decent reaction skills. I will need to do a bit more messing around to see if these are actual issues but for now they are kind of annoying.

A Superb Villain4 votes

Thank you for taking the time to report this. I suspected Veigar would be encouraged into riskier positions to maximize his new Q's potential. The issue of gap closers bypassing his delayed E does not surprise me in the slightest.

Hopefully, these complications will justify some buffs to compensate his awkward state.

CrazedPorcupine4 votes

Items are healthy counterply, but only if there are a large host of items to pick from that all provide counterplay. one or two items that provide counter play is not enough, you'd need 4-5 even 6 items at a variety of price ranges to make items a viable choice of counterplay.

Dota 2 has huge numbers of ways to counter point and click abilities because they're way more common.

League doesn't have the tools to deal with this, and thus they end up getting reworked or the champ nerfed into oblivion since if they're strong, they end up being broken and overbearing.
