Talon's Passive

Fauxfire··54 votes·7,009 views

Talon is by far my favorite assassin, let alone champion in the game (maybe next to Ahri). He's a champion I never get bored being and rarely an unsatisfactory with at the end of a game, win or loss. This season I won 18/22 Solo Queue games as him in mid lane, down from 18/18 (100% winrate, but I had a bad day one day), and think he's not as useless and people perceive him to be, however I greatly dislike one aspect of Talon, and I'm sure other experienced players will agree - his passive is him weakest tool, and collectively in a whole game, nearly useless. I want to see if I can make Riot aware of this, maybe chalk it beside other champion changes in mind by explaining it... with science (math)!

Talon's passive is simple if you understand how it works. Directly from the tooltip:

"Talon's autoattacks deal 10% additional damage to any target that is slowed, stunned, immobilized or suppressed."

This means that each on-hit effect applied by Talon to a champion with the above described debuffs, he will apply an extra 10% of that AA damage, or 10% of his total AD. The most important thing to note that this passive damage amplification is not increased by critical strikes, any extra on-hit applying damage from items, OR Noxian Dimplomacy (Talon's Q).

Here's an example. Level 1, a player might have 78 AD. Disregarding armor penetration, that player will deal 78 physical damage to a minion. Casting Rake to slow that minion THEN an AA will deal ~86 physical damage to that minion because of Mercy (the passive). If Talon instead Rake's a minion and activates Noxian Diplomacy before the AA, Talon will deal a total of 78 * 1.1 + 30 + (0.3 * 23) ~= 123 physical damage. The extra damage done by Q is ignored by Talon's passive, only increasing his base AD + bonus AD. This is the same for ALL on-hit effects (Sheen, crit, ect.)

This is where it gets complicated. I'm going to show with approximate math how Talon's damage varies with two of his best combo's: W E AA Q and E AA Q W in three cases: level 3, level 6 with some extra AD, and level 18 with a full build. These examples will not include, for the sake of understanding and simplicity, critical strikes, armor, armor penetration, stacking mastery damage amplification, and champion damage reduction spells. It's worth noting that if all auto attacks were critical strikes in any scenario, the difference between damage would remain the same. It will, however, include the Havoc mastery, as shown by the 1.03 damage amplification because it is mandatory for glass-cannon Talon. This is base damage at its core. Finally, I understand it's possible to put an AA in JUST after cutthroat's slow to apply Mercy damage, but being true for both scenarios, the difference remains the same.

Talon is level 3 with a item 1036 23 bonus AD for a total of 83 AD with masteries

Combo 1 - Without passive

E AA - 83 * 1.03 * 1.03 = 88.05 Q - (83 + 40 + (29.9)) * 1.03 * 1.03 = 162.21 W - (60 + (27.6)) * 1.03 * 1.03 = 92.93 Total = 342.59 physical damage

Combo 2 - With passive

W - (60 + (27.6)) * 1.03 = 90.22 E AA - 83 * 1.1 * 1.03 * 1.03 = 96.86 Q - (83 * 1.1 + 40 + (29.9)) * 1.03 * 1.03 = 171.01 Total = 358.09 physical damage

With his passive, he deals 15 more physical damage because Talon gets two auto-attacks in his combo. It's worth noting that the first of the two combo's has the potential to deal more damage because Talon is making the best use of his slow - dealing quick burst then keeping his enemy close for an extra AA when it has reset after the W cast, but this is good use of his passive and shows, at level 1, it's worth the extra mile. It's very weak and very risky to do for level 3 Talon vs a good mage, but plausible.

Talon is level 6 with item 3134 and item 1036 51 bonus AD for a total of 118 AD with masteries

Combo 1 - Without passive

E AA - 118 * 1.03 * 1.03 = 125.18 Q - (118 + 40 + (66.3)) * 1.03 * 1.03 = 237.95 W - (80 + (61.2)) * 1.03 * 1.03 = 149.79 R - (240 + (76.5)) * 1.03 * 1.03 = 335.77 Total = 848.69 physical damage

Combo 2 - With passive

W - (80 + (61.2)) * 1.03 = 145.43 E AA - 118 * 1.1 * 1.03 * 1.03 = 137.7 Q - (118 * 1.1 + 40 + (66.3)) * 1.03 * 1.03 = 250.47 R - (240 + (76.5)) * 1.03 * 1.03 = 335.77 Total = 869.37 physical damage

With his passive, he deals ~21 more damage. The pattern continues as his attack damage grows and he maxes his W and Q, but it's agreeable that the passive does little to no damage and barely compensates the 3% increased damage on Rake, the ability Talon should almost always max first (a place doesn't come to mind where he should not). This goes on until something changes - Talon begins putting points into cutthroat. Why? As cutthroat is increased, its damage amplification is as well, increasing to 15% from 3%, where it remained for all of early game and most of mid game. Let's compare at full build.

Level 18 Talon with item 3074 item 3142 item 3117 item 3035 item 3071 item 3031

  • 373 AD - 265 bonus AD

Combo 1 - Without passive

E AA - 373 * 1.15 * 1.03 = 441.81 Q - (373 + 200 + (344.5)) * 1.15 * 1.03 = 1086.77 W - (260 + (318)) * 1.15 * 1.03 = 684.64 R - (440 + (397.5)) * 1.15 * 1.03 = 992.01 Total = 3205.23 physical damage

Combo 2 - With passive

W - (260 + (318)) * 1.03 = 595.34 E AA - 373 * 1.1 * 1.15 * 1.03 = 486 Q - (373 * 1.1 + 200 + (344.5)) * 1.15 * 1.03 = 1101.02 R - (440 + (397.5)) * 1.15 * 1.03 = 992.01 Total = 3174.37 physical damage

Talon does MORE damage without the use of his passive is a burst pattern than with it, given than none of his allies used crowd control on his target before he decided to delete them. More to the point, Talon's passive is arguably only very useful in laning phase because the difference between damage dealt and total damage dealt is it its highest and when it can be used most properly. I hope that this explanation helps a bit, and I'd like to see some changes in a patch, especially since Talon wasn't compensated well when his silence was removed (probably only because of LCS and the freelo Talon bandwagon, respect to Curse's mid laner Voyboy). If you liked it or just like simply like Talon , please help out by up-voting this thread. Thanks!

Azir was a favorite of mine (bless whoever stood up at the meeting and decided to give some range back), so I hope that's not what happens to Talon! I think it needs a rework, not a buff/balance exchange.

Talon actually is an unhealthy assassin. ult shreds entire teams instead of just his intended target and his W is AoE and he has a bleed. I mean if he snowballs, the game is done. He erases teams not a single person. Honestly would not be surprised to see him nerfed before Zed.

dont say that D:

As a Talon main before silence removal, yep he was really unhealthy. He won most trades against AP mids by default(AD mids were unpopular back then, not even Zed) once he got a Brutalizer without even taking damage and his AoE made him easily get double kills bot lane. The only problem was his mana issues and he couldn't kill most tanks and bruisers, though the latter doesn't matter if every other spuishy on their team was dead.

He probably won't be nerfed any time soon now though, you can actually deal with him in lane now, so he is fine for the most part, even if his burst is unhealthy (so is LB's and Nidalee's and Riot isn't doing anything)

forist3 votes

That's an exaggeration on so many different levels. I can guarantee that even before talon's silence was removed his counter-play was just having half a brain. Even with his silence mechanic he was literally the most binary assassin in the game.

Divewing3 votes

"his counter-play was just having half a brain" ^Riot hates this, it's unfair to people who deserve it. Gotta be able to out twitch every champion, screw positioning and not making mistakes

Whispering Tide1 votes

To be fair, not being in lane should not be a form of counter-play.

forist1 votes

It's actually the exact opposite. The easiest way to beat talon is to always be in lane. Push the wave out and make him use mana to farm. This will also help prevent him from roaming without losing significant farm and mid tower. I'm not saying "stay in lane with half hp right after he hits 6, but you should at least have the common sense to play defensively and know the limits of your champion.

Whispering Tide1 votes

Yeah, except there's a fair amount of champs who will 100-0 outright die to him as soon as they enter his range.

forist10 votes

If your entire team is getting shredded by a talon ult then you probably aren't itemizing well. There's a reason his damage amp only applies to one person. His bleed is the weakest bleed/dot mechanic in the game. Also, his damage is severely hampered by the fact that he relies on single-target auto attacks to both use his q and proc his passive. If you think this champ is in any way stronger than zed, who btw has the same number of aoe skills, then you're better off not offering insight on balance.

Zed doesn't have a huge AoE damage in his ult that also procs black cleaver up to 3 times on each target. Talon's damage is higher than Zed's to a single target as well as having higher damage potential and a much better chase. The only thing that holds Talon back is mana. And with Crystaline becoming more and more common it's not hard to see Talon snowball against mids who can't keep him low enough to scare him off.

forist5 votes

2 black cleaver procs, once on the way out and once on the way in. If anyone preferred black cleaver over yommu's that info would be relevant. Do some math, zed does more damage to a single target than talon, also having mixed damage from his passive and ult. Talon is held back by less mobility than zed, a riskier burst pattern, and higher cooldowns. I hope you seriously don't believe that talon is a lane bully, because if you do, then you are probably playing like shit against him.

It's 4 then. You can get hit by 2 blades each way. Each one procs it as they are seperate instances of damage.

Oh my christ stop. Talon's ult is a ring it can only apply damage once going out and once while retracting. Each blade isn't doing that damage to you that would be busted as hell. It's one single instance of damage no matter how many blades physically touch you. If Talon's ult applied its damage per blade you would instantly die at 6 if i retracted them through you.

Um when his ult says it does damage per blade its kind of Riot's fault for poor clarity. When it says they only do damage expanding and contracting that automatically makes it sound like each blade does damage, there would be no other point for it to burst out the way it does. Look at Graves. The 3 shells can hit the same target.

So calm the fuck down.

forist3 votes

Look, if you played the champion, you'd know how he works. I don't like it when people offer insight on things they don't actually have any experience with. For me to give my opinion on whether a champion is op or nerf worthy, I would have to play both as and against said champion. Most people on these boards just simply whine because they had a hard time with x-champion instead of taking the time to play as the champ and determine whether or not they were just outplayed.

ok, rant over, just needed to get that off my chest. Btw i don't hate this community, otherwise I wouldn't even bother posting to correct people on here. I'm posting because I care enough to try to help people who use these boards.

Wait, why are you going W -> E? Ideally, you should be doing E -> W -> AA -> Q -> R A little bit slower on the burst, but I do believe it maximizes his damage.

Jungle Lux God1 votes

A agree with this.

E -> W should be dealing a lot more burst than W -> E.

A possible reason he may not have put it in is that he otherwise wouldn't be able to get E's bonus damage on both triggers of R, but there should be enough time to do it.

forist2 votes

Any attempt at drawing attention to this champ is futile. Riot doesn't care about him, unless he suddenly becomes op and "lacks counter-play" again. Let's just take solace in the fact that he can still do his job despite receiving nothing but nerfs for the last couple of years.

SouL1ess2 votes

The most important thing to note that this passive damage amplification is not increased by critical strikes, any extra on-hit applying damage from items, OR Noxian Dimplomacy ('s Q).

It does apply to pre-mitigation crit damage.

It doesn't apply to Sheen effects.

It does apply to Noxian Diplomacy. (I tested myself)

And finally some math to show how worthless Talon's passive is, and is almost a non-factor passive in his gameplay pattern.

KYU222 votes

Everyone complains about "unhealthy" playstyles, but Talon was probably the healthiest of any assassin to date. A pink ward makes him visible throughout his entire combo and will more than likely ensure that he dies, while the whole "shredding" entire teams holds little merit as he has some of the lowest bases and ratios.

raggnir2 votes

as a fellow Talon enthusiast, i agree that his passive is, and has always been useless. i can hardly find a worse synergy between a champion and his passive skill. However, i do not agree on the point that he needs a "powerful" passive that would lead to certain nerfs. talon has already one of the highest damage bursts in the game, if not the highest. so his passive should either help to draw the maximum potential from his kit for a kill or add to his survivability by adding some mobility or subterfuge.

for exemple: passive: any enemy player suffering from Noxian Diplomacy's bleeding effect will receive 20%/40%/60% more damage from Talon 's R (increases at level 11 and 16). cannot be used more than once every 60 seconds.

that will ensure you that even though you die (because you either rape the whole team or you kill one person and the rest of them gangbang you first thing), you will ensure that your team will not have to run after an adc while being flanked.

Stompburger1 votes

Yeah, I would like to see him get a more interesting passive too. Maybe something that doesn't just increase his damage output?

I remember when Cutthroat didn't even apply the % damage increase, when they fixed that he was nerfed - this was when the League of Cleavers was a thing. They nerfed both Talon and Cleaver.

Talon is a pretty damn good champ, and if Riot gives him an actual Passive ability, then he'd skyrocket to a dangerous level of power

Or maybe, in some bizarre clarity of mind, they might at least try swapping Ashe and Talon passives. Never understood the reasoning on why an ADC has a passive that actively encourages you to not constantly attack, while the item build for ADCs usually is contrary to that. That and it would fit nicely into the assassin style play of only striking when you have opportunity better.

DoFr1 votes

a movement speed passive will do the trick, whenever talon casts an ability he gets movement speed, similer to ahri's Q

or a heal factor/damage reduction, i can't help but notice in his dragonblade skin, his arms are wounded and scarred, that shows that he withstead some amount of pain and determination, that could be a point to make a passive that makes him sustain with all that early harass and make his laning phase a bit easier

LordForrest1 votes

Honestly his passive isnt that bad, i all depends on how you build and play him. Hell with the build i use late game with almost full build i can kill squishy champs with less then half my full combo that has AAs and Tiamat weaved into it and i can actually merc tanks pretty effectively. Hell i have gotten triple kills from the aoe i was dealing when i dove my target. And personally even if i didn't play him the way i did, i would still prefer his current passive, because of the help it gives his laning phase even if a standard combo does more damage without it late game.

Axests1 votes

talon's passive is basically for bonus damage when trading and a little extra burst when combo'ing, though honestly i'd prefer something else as his passive

Enemies marked with mercy take 10% increased damage from talon, including basic attacks, items, and abilities. Any one champion may not be marked with mercy more than once every 6 seconds."
