Would a "tether" as a new type of CC be beneficial to the game?

Tether as in a leash, so to speak. Point A is a fixed location, the "leash" is a specific length and target champion cannot move outside the radius, but can move freely as long as the leash doesn't go taut?

After some thought, I realize cataclysm is a little similar, however, it's absolute, as it creates walls, whereas tether could be attached on another side of a wall, limiting your movement to the edges of the other wall for a small duration.

Two other champions already kind of have a mini version of this ability. Morgana with her ult, and Karma with one of her abilities because I really don't know what her abilities are and I really don't feel like looking it up.

Those aren't nearly like this.

They are tethers that you can move out of to break, and if you don't they CC you. This would keep you confined into a small area to move, unlike those or Leblanc's chain.

There is a very similar ability that the "butcher" uses in Heroes of the Storm. A stake appears in the ground and a chain links to the enemy champion, tethering them to the stake for a given amount of time. Seems like a very interesting mechanic to add to the game, but the only champion in league that uses chains would be thresh.

Also Slark uses a very similar ability in DotA 2 where after he leaps onto an enemy, all enemy units in range are leashed to his landing site, allowing full movement and casting, but limiting anything outside blinks to get away.

It is a very interesting mechanic. League has its fair share of stuns and roots, but none of them have the cinematic effects that are found in Heroes and Dota. In Heroes, there is a cool root ability that Anub'arak uses where he wraps his enemy in a cocoon and they are locked in there until the teammates damage the cocoon enough to break it. I love league, but some of those added effects would really add a lot to the theme and personality of each champion.

It sounds like something they'll throw on the next support they feel like pumping out, so give it time. There are also a lot of mechanics to think about. Do I have to specify the champion tethered, or is it all enemy champs in an area? Can they flash the tether? How long does it take for the tether to activate? Would jumps, blinks(like flash), or other similar movement abilities break the tether? Could I tether someone through a wall to shorten their leash, making it harder for them to move? Etc. etc. Overall, it sounds kind of cool, but it would need a LOT of testing as I'm sure it would take Riot a little while to get right.

I feel like this would be a really cool idea for an ability or two, but I wouldn't create it too often.

It offers some potentially really cool gameplay and may offer a really interesting form of CC that could possibly affect highly mobile champions more than mobile ones.

A problem would that it may require some specific cases for coding, such as coding blinks to not be able to dash outside of the tether range or coding abilities designed to be unstoppable (ie. Malphite's Unstoppable Force and Vi's Assault and Battery) to not stop upon exceeding the tether radius. It might be a bit of a hassle to do.

A better way to do this is what veigar already has, and thresh, and that could be given to new champs since it is a cool design. You cast some sort of shape like ground spell, it doesn't do anything if you stay inside which essentially is a tether, but if you try to move out you get hit with something: a stun, damage plus heavy slow, could be in the future it knocks you back inside, etc.

Puck has a tether in dota it marks the ground with a dot thing and people around the dot take damage and are tethered, if they leave the tether in any way they are stunned and take more damage

Wrong type of tether.

How so? Can you show a video on what kind of ''tether'' you mean?

Well mainly what the OP meant was that the Tether would "stop" an enemy from moving too far away from Point A, whilst still allowing them to move around a bit.

Unlike the 4 up there walking out of the "range" of the tether would not break it, but rather cause it to go taut and stop you from moving any further forward/direction you were going.

These ones don't do that but rather break when you get out of their range, CC'ing you if you don't.

I can't think of any specific videos to link to to show you what I mean, but I believe above in the thread there is a post with a listing of heroes from other MOBAs that use what the OP was talking about.

Edit: Here is a clip showing what he meant - https://youtu.be/aA-n7Nmwwwg?t=2m10s

If timestamp does not work go to 2:10

The time stamp works. I get what OP means now... I guess that doesn't seem too over powered but at the same time, I honestly don't see that working with League's engine. The work around I can see it being implemented is a big AoE box (Thresh/Veigar) where hitting it knocks you back --- Azir's ult.

Skarner is the best leash of them all.

Reminds me of Binding Shot for my Hunter on WoW. It's definitely possible.

Edit: They could add different effects for breaking the tether on enemies, and even allies.

mmmmmm. Now I want a heal that gains power the longer you stand next to your adc. Re-use could grant a shield, and walking out of range could cause it to heal! Or even have the effects reversed! :D
